Always knew this.

I am not following this discussion but Saqlain was/is lot better bowler than Mendis ffs. It is not even a comparison. The 'unplayable' bit of Mendis lasted for short time and once he was figured out he became very ordinary. He didn't improve or improvised to counter, at least haven't till now. Saqlain was one of the better spinners around when he played and for a sustained period, especially when considered with someone like Mendis.

Saqlain was one of the best spinner, he keeps innovating it is what makes different from other spinners,(Warne might be exceptional) Mendis was found out after short period of time. There is no comparison here.

Saqlain at his peak was > Kumble. One of those who spun rings around even the Indian batting order which tamed likes of Warne and handled Murali reasonably well.

If Skills had even a part-time spinner to complement Saqlain, the prospect of spin from both ends for up to 20 overs would have put him in a much better position. As it is, even Maxwell's brother will be good enough to chase it down.

Does anyone remember that Indian Pakistan two match series where he took 5 wickets in all 4 innings. Absolute class act.

So a spinner widely regarded at his peak (which lasted a good 5-6 years) by his peers and the global audience as among the very best in the world was actually 'nothing special'

Coz revisinizim mate.

It didn't last 6 years. That's the revisionist part. He quite blatantly got found out after his great start.

If performances against India are any barometer, then Mendis must be the greatest bowler ever. He made a far better batting lineup than the one Saqlain bowled to look like a bunch of clueless school kids.

M.Samuels can spin it

Hmm, true. He's pretty bad though. I guess if Skills said he'd bowl some instead of Pringles it might help. Not sure.
They are playing in sub continent, his spin might come in handy but again relying on 4 quick's at sub continent pitch is inviting trouble. With MJJ batting second set target can be chased down.

That loss was painful.
I used to go on bicycle to a private tuition class and I remember I was just unable to ride that evening while going to tuition after the match got over. A ride which usually used to take 20 min or so on bicycle took 45 min that day. Sachin with his back problem had taken India on verge of win and the other useless feckers still managed to screw it up. Given we won the other test convincingly, we could have had a 2-0 series win against a Pak team which was very good back then.

It was high pressure chase from the starting and once Wasim took Dravid,no one look comfortable barring Sachin( he was playing with pain) and once he gone i stopped watching it and gone on to play cricket and later some one said our lower order collapse as not with standing Pak bowling to score additional 30-40 to win it.
Few painful defeats i could remember,Sharjah in 90's(Aaqib destroying us twice) IND vs Aus 92 world cup,IND vs SRL 96 SF and this.

Not even 30-40 runs! Only 17 were needed when Sachin got out. 3 wickets were remaining but those guys could bat enough to score 17. They just lost their shit. For Sachin it was practically impossible to play on and he got out trying to hit big.

Mongia had given good company to Sachin btw.

I was following the last overs with 300 people around our family radio in the Kalindi Kunj park (feck knows why we were there). That loss was absolutely heartbreaking.

That's the most embarrassing thing with our batting ,its test and you are at your home condition and not able to score 17 is pathetic, credit to Pak bowlers Saqlain/Wasim bowled brilliant.
This was three match series as first in Calcutta was drawn , second in Chennai which they won and the third in Delhi where Kumble got his 10Wkt/innings.

No it was 2 match series. A test as part of Asian test championship had followed soon which was in Kolkata. India had lost that too because of spineless play. Overall the India team then was just Sachin + some spineless feckers who occasionally did something good. It changed when Ganguly became captain. At least team became more aggressive after that.

The 10 wickets by Kumble though  I had skipped school to watch it.

Thanks for correcting me,my poor memory.

Nah. It was a two match series.

The match at Eden Gardens, if I recall correctly, was after the match at Kotla and was first match of the triangular Test tournament between India, Sl and Pak. Was cursing Shoaib so much for the part he played in Sachin's run out while we were chasing the total.

The chaos that followed!!! Sachin had to come out of dressing room and go around the ground pacifying the crowd of 60-70k! The news had filtered in school that Sachin got run out and the manner of it and everyone was fuming and raging

We weren't in fecking school for this too.

Just checked. Both days were Sundays. I remember playing cricket in my colony when Anil started to wreak havoc, and Kalinidi Kunj park was Sachins.

Did Shoaib got sachin with his fine Yorker in first innings? his post wkt celebration was annoying.

This was going mind when TMH said he bunk school, usually we go to ground to play only on Sat/Sun, second incident was watching it from home.

Never warmed to Akhtar because of that. Always wanted batsmen to hit him off the park and found immense satisfaction when that happened..

 ffs...I clearly remember me and school guys raging and going around on cycle to a friend's place afterwards!
I am remembering wrongly about Kotla but this game I am pretty sure I was with school friends and that we were at school. Only explanation can be, we were in 9th/10th then and sometimes we used to have extra classes on weekends.

Amazing that these games we are talking about were 17 years ago! Such a long time.

Are you sure?

I distinctly remember bunking college and staying at home to watch us chase the total on day 4 of the Test.

Edit: My bad. I thought you were talking about the Kolkata Test. As you were.

The collapse after Sachin was caught off Saqlain made me so angry, remember it like it was yesterday. The sheer pain through which he had played and the feckers screwed it up.

It was hardly a collapse. Sachin's was the 7th wicket and only the tailenders remained. Though I was hoping Sunil Joshi, who had hit one or two sixes before Sachin got out, would get us home.

Barely 10 odd runs were required, you'd expect them to bring it home.
