We don't necessarily need a playmaker. A centre mid of any description would be nice.
Fergie said two or maybe three signings. Jones has come ahead of schedule but we missed out on Varane which should balance it out. De Gea and Young were the certainties. All the central midfielders we're being linked to are unlikely to sign, to say the least.
Of course Fergie has been known to... well, modify the truth somewhat when it comes to transfers, it's not unreasonable to expect that this is it for the summer.
We need a "box to box" much more than a playmaker. Rooney can do that job now.
Something like a ... far superior version of Fletcher (no offense Darren) would be good.
A cross between Carrick and Fletcher would be nice. A midfield enforcer who is classy on the ball.
I'd like to see our midfield play like it did in 06/07. That means a player who is good at finding space to play a short passing game with Carrick in the middle, but also who can spray long passes to the wings. Toughness isn't really necessary with Carrick's defensive positioning and the strength of our defence.

Young and De Gea have been pretty much certainties to sign since January, I would of imagined if we were in for a top class midfielder the media would of cotton onto the story by now

We are linked with a different midfielder by the media every day. It is Thiago at the minute. And the usual bull about Nasri and Sneijder.

Nasri is more than likely just using us to get the deal he wants at Arsenal and even if he's not Arsenal wouldn't sell to us. Maybe if Nasri does really want to sign for us then he'll let his contract run down and we'll get him on a free next summer.
As for Modric it's only twitter that's so far linked us with him, being this is the first summer Spurs have actually had a bid for him I suspect they'll hold onto him this year and then lose him next summer should there still be interest in him. Either that or Chelsea will make Spurs and offer they cant refuse and we cant match.
I suspect if we have genuinely identified both/either Nasri and Modric next summer would be a more likely time we could get either tbh (providing Nasri doesn't sign a contract that is)
