Northern Ireland Thread

I understand that point. But surely they could explain it as a temporary timely intervention; a tactical move, on behalf of the people of Ireland and Northern Ireland, to stop the contrived and destructive right wing plot that is Brexit? It could have massive repercussions as regards protecting the economies of both parts of Ireland (and incidentally that of Britain too) from unecessary damage. And by putting them in a snooker of all snookers, could drive the DUP mad, leaving them heavily embarrassed in front of their farming base of support in the border counties. The Shinners stop Brexit initiative would garner world-wide press, and in every interview Michelle would mention the strange Cambridge Analytica links to the DUP, and all about how no one knows where the nearly half a million greenbacks funnelled by the DUP into Brexit came from... I would call that a win, win, win.

I dont think sinn fein are that keen on the EU either tbh, they'll probably see Brexit as ultimately a useful tool to push for a united ireland. Its not our place to 'rescue' Britain from Brexit anyway. If they had competent politicians it needn't be the absolute shitfest its turning into. Norway, Switzerland and Iceland manage just fine outside. They just have clowns in charge.

Twenty years today for the GFA.

So has it been a success or failure? Or somewhere in between?

If all sides went back to war tomorrow it'd still be a spectacular success. If it lasted half the time it has it'd have been a spectacular success. Its nowhere vaguely close to being anything other than a massive success and anyone who suggests otherwise is a total feckwit tbh.

I just saw an excellent iPlayer documentary on the funeral murders following the Gibraltar shooting. I wonder if we'll ever know why those two poor corporals were in the middle of all that.

I read recently it was a case of bad luck according to a former British army intelligence officer. One of the soldiers was showing the other one around Belfast and didn't know about the funerals that day and took a wrong turn or something along those lines.

Well we've had 20 years of relative peace after 30 years of almost constant violence so i would say it's been a success. Lets hope it doesn't get undone by the bullshit surrounding Brexit.

That just doesn't make sense as everybody would have known that a funeral was going on and be under heightened alert considering what Michael Stone had just done. Their service records will reveal all once they are declassified....if that ever happens.

Yeah i don't really buy it either. I doubt we will ever find out the truth about why they were really there.

They're demanding more cookies, aren't they?

Looks like they’ve started.

Not the normal post for this thread (i.e not about politics), but that assault in Bangor is shocking. Hope they get sent down for a long time.

Absolute scum carrying out that attack, I felt sick watching it. Hopefully the young girl makes a full recovery and the idiots who attacked her as well as that mouthpiece behind the camera get what they deserve.

About time someone did the polices job for them, shame they are now more worried about trying to find who actually caught the two rats to press charges. (Two paedophiles have been on the run around South Armagh/border area for a few days, had been using a puppy to try and entice children apparently)
Would rather the police were left to it, thank you.

As opposed to glorified gangsters.

I’d prefer people like that weren’t roaming around my local area, gangsters or no gansters thank you. And the police were left to it, the two lads only got a few slaps by the look of it, few years ago two cnuts like that wouldn’t have been seen again.

You can use that logic to justify anything. And it’s fecking childish.

Exactly.
They were run out of Letterkenny a week before. One of them had 60 convictions and were on the run with their puppy routine!
I'm surprised they got away as lightly as they did.

*Latest update*

James White has been recalled to prison following his arrest in the Mullaghbawn area on Saturday 28th April.
Alex Guesto appeared at Newry Crown court this morning on a bench warrant and has been remanded into custody.

From PSNI Facebook page. I wonder how long they’ll be in.

Is that those 2 fiddlers who thought it would be a good idea to hide in South Armagh?
Tarred and feathered I believe.

It's been kicking off in Derry over the past few days and over night in East Belfast. Police taking away bonefire materials this afternoon in East Belfast too and reports of a pipe bomb being thrown into the Short Strand. Time to hunker down for a couple of days, thought we'd left this shite behind.

The thing in Derry is a load of young fellas. It’s overblown and doesn’t deserve airtime. What does deserve to be mentioned is the residents of the bogside having a protest rally against the rioters and then showing support to their Protestant neighbors who have had stones thrown over the walls in recent nights. Good to see the 2 communities coming together to say enough is enough

I saw that last night on the news and it was really great to see.

I agree that it is very localised in Derry and the thugs that are throwing the petrol bombs have little or no support but they need a stronger police response and to take this scum of the street. They have the potential to kill and should be treated as the attempted murder that it is.

There were shots fired at police last night so I don't think it's unreasonable to surmise that dissidents have been somewhat involved in orchestrating the trouble so far and understandable that it takes the media interests to a new level. It would be a shame if it were to continue to get out of hand because Derry has been seen as the model of how to come to a settled compromise over contentious parades and the good work done over the years was clearly evident with that solidarity rally the other night. The problem is that loyalists will be using the trouble in Derry to whip up tensions against the police for a percieved lack of action in the Bogside while they have been, quite rightly, removing dangerous bonfire material in Belfast. Whataboutery and false equivalencies tend to resonate in these communities particularly with the lack of proper leadership.

Vehicles torched amid tension over loyalist bonfires in Northern Ireland

By 1am on Thursday, the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) had received a total of 327 emergency calls, mobilised to 164 operational incidents, 57 of which were bonfire-related. Fire officers said the figures represented a 23% increase on incidents attended last year, with the regional control centre at times handling an emergency 999 call every 48 seconds.

Fire appliances came under attack on three occasions, at Carn Hill in Londonderry, Moygashel near Dungannon and Ballycarry/Whitehead. No firefighters were injured.

Earlier, a security alert forced the closure of a dual carriageway beside Belfast City Airport, preventing arriving passengers leaving the terminal building on Wednesday night.

Masked men also blocked roads close to the Ulster hospital in Dundonald with burning cars.

In Newtownards, Co Down a bus carrying passengers was hijacked by masked men, who were believed to have been carrying firearms. None of the passengers were injured in the incident which took place around 7.30pm on Wednesday. The bus was hijacked in Blenheim Drive and later set on fire.

Police were also at the scene of nearby Messines Road, which was blocked by burning tyres.

On the Upper Newtownards Road in Dundonald a number of masked males pushed a car into the road and set it on fire close to Robbs Road at around 9.45pm.

A further report was received that two cars were set on fire close to the Carrowreagh Road.

Short Strand explosion believed to be a pipe bomb

Louise McCann, a resident on Clandeboye Drive, said she heard a "deafening bang".

'Frightening experience'
"I automatically ran straight through the house, came out and the place was covered in smoke.

"My partner jumped into the car, as the kids were standing at the bottom of the street, to get the kids into the car.

"But we didn't realise the car had actually been damaged. A part of whatever the device was was stuck in the car."

She added: "I actually thought the children were dead, they were hysterical, all of them, the whole place was hysterical.

"It was the most frightening experience of my whole life."

The state of this place. :wenger:

I'll be spending the 'glorious 12th' in my house going nowhere near the streets this year as I do most years.

Not sure what's going on tonight, but I heard the police helicopter passing a few times already. The city is full of tourists too with the Maritime festival on.
