fecking idiots. My girlfriend was visiting from Berlin (She's Austrian) and we're lying in bed and then we hear a helicopter. So that's going for ages and she's asking me why can we constantly hear a helicopter. Now, obviously she knows a bit about the situation here and I had reassured her loads of times that no bombs had went off in ages, it'd be grand, but I jokingly said "Helicopter's been here for a good while, maybe a bomb did go off". So she googles bomb explosion Belfast and of course there's a BBC article on it and she freaks out a little. Disaster.

By the sounds of things it might be the only explosion she'll see or hear tell of while in Belfast. Will you ride her ffs and stop worrying or chatting about a helicopter flying around in the sky!

Internet girlfriend?

To be honest Moses, I doubt the Irish forces would have been organised enough to be able to orchestrate any official collusion. I would imagine, and I actually know of a few cases where, many a blind eye was turned by local cops all over the place.

Was there not some levels of official collusion with the provision of arms to the IRA in the 70's?

Not sure, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Also, I'd love to see how many of those Lebanese ships coming in for Irish beef were ever subject to inspection, "say nothing lads ;)"

Yeah. I'd be pretty sure in the early days there was a lot of sympathy, aid and turning a blind eye to collude with the IRA but as the campaign went on into the 80's I think the majority of that dried up and any help they got came from either Garda in the IRA or sympathising heavily on an individual basis.

Just a guess.

I'd say thats a fair guess. Either way, at this point its sort of like splitting hairs IMO. The truth should be put out there about it all, and people need to process it because the long it drags on with new revelations coming out the long it will take to move on.

Thats why I was so shocked by Adams comments on it. It just reminded me of the old days, still stuck in a militant position, viewing the other side as the enemy - even it thats what they were at the time - was incredibly petty and stupid. But then Adams is a massive hypocrite in my opinion.

I have some sympathy with Adams and SF in the north some of the time because he's constantly trying to perform a tightrope walk of keeping the hardliners on board whilst trying to appease the DUP and continue the working relationship. It really can't be too easy to do with the media constantly taking swipes and the political parties down here trying to jeopardise things for political point scoring exercises. I lost any respect I might ever have had for a lot of people the first time Adams was on the Late Late Show and a few experienced people embarrassed themselves by trying to take on this media novice and he ran rings around them. Ever since then the only tactic by the media is to ask the same questions over and over again in the same tired old way. Even the media in the North have given up asking was Adams in the IRA. He's never ever going to admit it so stop asking the question without more evidence.

IMO, the biggest hypocrites of all are the political parties in the South who refuse to work with SF despite insisting that the UUP and DUP work with them. Any time in the Dail or an interview/debate a SF representative asks a tough question of an opponent on any matter they role out the same tired reply that 'SF have some cheek asking that after all they have done'. Well, the people of Monaghan, Dublin and Donegal though enough of SF to vote them in with a fair mandate so it's insulting those people not to answer them.

(oh and I'm totally not a SF supporter and have never voted for them)

Totally agree with you about the situation in the Dail, it's a joke all round.

I just can't stand Adam though, he's the very definition of a shifty politician as far as I can see.

Yep the likes of FF, FG and Labour use SF's history as a get of out jail card constantly.

Explosion in Belfast this evening. Here we go again.

Can all these cnuts not just feck off and let the rest of us live in peace?

There has been a small explosion in Belfast's Cathedral Quarter.
Police have confirmed it was caused by a bomb. A warning had been phoned to a Belfast newspaper and the bomb exploded at about 18:45 GMT as the reports were being checked.
There are no reports of injuries. A security alert in the area is continuing.
The Cathedral Quarter is one of the main entertainment venues in Belfast, home to several bars and restaurants.
An eyewitness, Paul Simms from Bangor, told the BBC: "I was going to see a Christmas play with my wife, 10-year-old twins and my parents at the MAC (Metropolitan Arts Centre).

At the scene: BBC NI's Mark Simpson

All the streets around Belfast's cathedral have been closed off.
Hundreds of people spilled out onto the streets after bars, restaurants and a number of homes were evacuated.
Many of them had been at Christmas parties - some even carried their Christmas dinner onto the street and ate it out here in the cold.
There is a large police presence in the area, the police helicopter is up above.
"There was a police cordon set up across the road.
"I had just crossed the road to speak to a policeman by the cordon when there was a bright flash and loud bang about 40 metres away - behind a car parked beside the theatre.
"Needless to say my kids were scared and we were all quite shocked.
"Being typical Northern Ireland, most people just stood around hoping they could get to where they were going. Many had been evacuated from the bars and pubs in the area and were still full of the Christmas spirit."
'A new low'
Secretary of State Theresa Villiers said the attack was "absolutely deplorable".
"On one of busiest nights of the year, with people enjoying the festivities ahead of Christmas, as well as all those in the final stages of Christmas shopping, it shows that these terrorists are stooping to a new low," she said.
"This small minority want to drain the economic life from Belfast - but we will not let them succeed."
Sinn Féin's Gerry Kelly also condemned the attack.
"This indiscriminate and reckless action was an attack on all the people of Belfast and those that had come into the city centre to shop or enjoy the build up to the festive holidays," he said.
"Thankfully no one was hurt. Those that voice support for these groups, who's only allegiance is to violence, need to come forward and explain to the people what they aim to achieve by this reckless action."
'Anti-Belfast'
SDLP justice spokesman Alban Maginness said: "The Cathedral Quarter is a thriving centre for restaurants and bars and a popular spot for tourists and locals and was predictably busy on a Friday night so close to Christmas.
"Those who perpetrated this heinous act must know that they have no support from the people of Belfast. They are anti-Belfast."
Anna Lo of the Alliance Party said she was disgusted by the attack.
She said the bombers "have no regards for the consequences of their actions and do not care if people are injured or killed".
Assembly member Basil McCrea, leader of the NI21 party, tweeted: "Caught in bomb scare at St. Anne's Square. Part explosion. Christmas festivities in Cathedral quarter continue."
Thank God no reports of any injuries.

Bastards probably shut down the whole area for the night.

Christ. I hope everyone's OK.

Agree 100% with your second line!!!!
Police have said there are no reports of any injuries. The bomb partially exploded as the area was being cleared. The Cathedral quarter will have been packed tonight with people in the bars and restaurants for their works Christmas do's and what not.

Wankers.

Nah I was there at the Black Box with the wife at a burlesque show which was epic. Wasn't much to it just a small explosion by amateur cowards. Fair few peelers around for a while though. Brilliant night wasm't spoiled by those feckers.

Aye, A few of my Belfast mates on FB told me much the same. Resilient bunch the proper Belfast people.

Seen a pic of the actual explosion on facebook. People were standing watching it from 50 yards away by the looks of it. I'd have been hightailing it to Derry. fecking headers.

The traffic was free and clear half an hour later. This lot are light years away from what the old PIRA was capable off however I am sorry to say they will probably fluke something awful sometime soon. I want them caught ASAP because my wife loves living here and I don't want her to worry about shit like that.

Now a fire bomb in a shop in Cornmarket this evening. Trying to cause as much destruction and disturbance around Christmas as possible.

You surprised man. I take it from your lack of info that there was no injuries or deaths?
Nah, it went off in the shop but staff removed it and called security forces. Not surprised, in the slightest. Just wish they'd all give it a rest. Nobody wants this, nobody supports this.

I'm calling this as one or two man operations that are unauthorised by anyone. They don't seem to be able to pull off anything bigger because of how infiltrated they are and as you said they lack any common support.
