Northern Ireland Thread

Yeah that sort of stuff was well known. Also people checking who you voted for at the polling station. Many people voted out of fear and intimidation back in the day.
Heard stories it still happens in places. They stand in the halls hear the names being called out, mark the names off and then go and knock on the doors of the ones who haven't had their name shouted out.

Why do they shout the name anyway?

Wouldn't be surprised if it still happens. Those boys are still around and unfortunately many people still live in fear of those thugs.

Christopher Stalford has died suddenly aged 39, leaving a wife and young family behind him.

Quite shocking he was only on Spotlight on Wednesday night.

Sad news indeed, sounded like a decent chap too. RIP

Is there a train direct to Dublin Airport from anywhere? Portadown? Derry?

You can get a bus from Belfast beside Gt Victoria Street train station that will drop you directly at the airport - it's relatively cheap also but I don't think there is a train.

There is a train I’m pretty sure I know a woman took it down few weeks ago..

Shame. Train lines in this country are shite. Was trying to find a way to avoid driving back after a stag in berlin

i know.It beggars belief actually that a major European capital Doesn’t have a train station. It’s the dark ages.

sorry I meant a train station at the airport

Current plan is to have the Metro North (first planned in the mid-70s I think) ready by 2037. It will link the airport to Dublin’s main train stations. And we all know it won’t be done, or probably even started, by then.

The Northern Ireland Protocol is lawful, the Court of Appeal in Belfast has ruled.
A group of unionist politicians had challenged the protocol in judicial review proceedings, claiming it was unlawful because it conflicted with the 1998 Good Friday Agreement and the Acts of Union.
But the court rejected their challenge on all grounds on Monday.

That would seem to be the end of the road now for that.

Weird one in this day and age someone hijacked a van driver, with a gun, put something in the back and forced him to driver to a peace conference with Simon Coveney attending.

Curious to know what the atmosphere is like up North with the big day looming? Is there a sense that things could get a bit ugly if SF are successful?

Be interested to see the exit polls over the next day or so!

Despite certain quarters trying their best to stoke tensions over the Protocol it's been largely very calm. The big anti-protocol protests intended to ignite unionist fury/turnout have been pretty poorly attended and the DUP are flailing under Donaldson's lacklustre leadership and in-party squabbling. That being said I would imagine they will do slightly better than what the polls are suggesting yet still shy of Sinn Fein. They've been non-committal about sharing power with a SF first minister but that's likely just posturing to stave off the TUV. Who knows how it may play out after the election but I don't get the impression that however messy it gets at Stormont that it will result in any sort of significant trouble on the streets, marching and bonfires are a different story though.

I think the DUP are saying that they’ll have a stand in deputy first minister so the first minister position isn’t actually a proper first minister position, anything that keeps them happy I suppose.

That's the same thing that SF always did isn't it? I'm sure Michelle O'Neill's current position is Deputy First Minister?

Thanks for this. Sounds like things are pretty good (calm) given the circumstances.

No not exactly, Michelle O’Neill was Deputy FM yeah, but DUP are saying they’ll put forward a stand in not official Deputy FM. Basically not committing to power sharing.

Quite calm really - the vast majority of people here couldn't really give a toss about the Protocol and it's just the DUP desperately trying to stoke up shit but I feel that most normal people can see it for what it is.

Any exit polls going? Is counting unfolding on any news channels at the minute or would that be tomorrow?

From RTE
"Counting will start at three centres in Belfast, Jordanstown and Magherafelt from 8am tomorrow morning with the first results expected later in the day"

Where have you heard this? Everything I’ve read suggests they won’t be nominating aDFM.
