I'm not sold on either of them to be honest. But if we can't buy a new number 1, we might as well try Henderson as the number 1 this season. Barring some miracle it looks like pre-2019 De Gea is sadly gone forever.

I think De Gea is the better keeper despite the penalty record.

I think Henderson is going to be number one anyway, so it doesn't really matter. De Gea is still the better keeper between them, but Henderson could improve and offers something different which is something we need. I think De Gea still could still regain his old form, I think he has been pretty good this season, but it's going to be somewhere else. Maybe re-team with Mourinho?

Let's give Henderson a year and see what he can do, if he is not the goalkeeper we find someone else next summer.

De Gea should not play one more game for United. Should he sold asap

This might be good news for Man Utd:

Henderson 'coming home' (well to Manchester) due to a hip injury. Can have a decent rest before next season. But I'm curious, how bad is it - how did it happen? he was on the bench on Sunday, is it a long-standing 'niggle' or something in training today?

On the whole topic though, I am certain Utd. need to at the very least loan out DDG and take a hit on part - maybe half of his wages. He is too well remunerated to be a bench-warmer/cup game goalie. I think the last monster contract he was given was a big mistake by the board. Is it £450k a week or something like that?

There is an incredible Ben Foster interview on The United Stand channel discussing on whether De Gea or Henderson should be number 1 next season. Check out the YouTube video!

If money were no object then a new goalie for me. Oblak by choice.
De Gea is deteriating quitequickly, which at his ge is surprising, and I dont think Henderson is good enough to be a top 4 goalie.

I'm yet to be convinced by Henderson, I don't see how he's better than De Gea, if at all

Henderson seems the better bet to me, but then they can't both stay, and moving de Gea will be very hard, while moving Henderson probably isn't.

Hendo is the more modern GK. He'll sweep up through balls and move off his line.

Dave is the better shot stopper but that's about it. I was always a fan of his but keeping has changed and we need to change with the times.

Hendo deserves a full season and Davies wages are too high for him to be a bit part player.

It's difficult to find a club for him so I imagine they'll both still be here when the window closes and we'll lose Dave on a free eventually.

This. Hendo allows us to push up further. His vocal nature is also welcome in what I still see as quite a meek team at times. Is he technically a better keeper? No, probably not but DDG has peaked and is on the way down.

Head says De Gea as hes on a huge wage and i dont see him being offered anything comparable elsewhere... certainly not with them paying us a transfer fee as well - and paying say 50% of his wage to go on loan just does not sound logical to me so my head says De Gea stays and we either loan or sell Henderson as Im sure there would be plenty of offers for him with both options

Heart says give Hendsrson a go as its always great to see a player emerge through the ranks and become a first team player but if we cant sell De Gea I just dont see it happening (and as above I dont see us selling de gea)

The muppet in me says sell them both for loads of money then get donnarumma on a free even though I know thats not gonna happen

Gut feel we keep De Gea (and henderson moves somewhere and is great)

This misses the point, it isn't so much a case of "which goalkeeper is better?" More a point of "which goalkeeper are we a better team with?"

And the answer to that question is clearly Henderson, both going from statistical analysis of our results and clean sheet record with him in the team, and from the old school eye test of just watching which goalkeeper the defenders are more comfortable in front of.

Now whether he is the long term answer, I genuinely don't know but of the two options we currently have he is by far the best choice. I just don't see how anyone can dispute that anymore.

Arsenal looking for a keeper aren't they? after selling the perfectly fine Martinez..

I'm still unsure of what Ole will choose to do with the keeper situation.

Whoever’s playing better. Can’t be that complicated can it? :p

if DDG isn’t sold, then it’s not a huge deal. There’s 2 starting options and don’t play favourites, just go with who has the better form (pre-season/training sessions/etc) ...either Henderson rises to the challenge and takes the reins or De Gea improves from the disappointing season he just had; win-win scenario.

So we've signed Heaton and the word is that he is going be our #2.

If that's true, it surely means one of DDG or Henderson is leaving.

It would be difficult to offload De Gea for two reasons. One is that he and his wife have long wanted to return to Spain and all of the big Spanish clubs have well established goalkeepers who are better than he is. Atlético might be an option as part of a part exchange deal with Oblak coming to United, but they'd be crazy to accept such a trade because DDG is, at present, a downgrade. He was world class for a few seasons, and there was talk that he was our best ever, but he's not been the same since about 2018 - some say he never quite recovered from the World Cup.

He could quite possibly go to Italy, but I'm not convinced any of the big teams there could satisfy his wage demands, which brings us on to our second problem:

Nobody is going to pay ~£350k per week for a goalkeeper who is no longer in the conversation for being the world's best. For comparison, Oblak and Neuer make about that same amount, Donnarumma is said to be on around £200k and Ter Stegen around £150k.

If De Gea still played with the same form he did in 2015, circa the time that Real Madrid's fax machine decided to block the transfer, £350k would be a reasonable weekly investment, but he's currently struggling to prove that he's better than Henderson.

Henderson would be much easier to offload, but that could be a terrible folly on our part, especially if De Gea regresses further. It's an impossible situation for Ole. Neither De Gea nor Henderson want to be backups, but it'll be difficult to move DDG on. I hate to make this comparison, because I love big Dave and I want him to be world class again, but it reminds me in many ways of Alexis Sánchez in 2019, we were paying him a fortune in return for very little and struggling to find a way to offload him. I never thought that DDG would ever be the kind of player we'd talk about 'offloading' - but he really isn't anything like the player he was 5-6 seasons ago, and at present, he's not worth the crazy wages he commands.

But we did offload Sanchez, just like we did Rooney.

These guys will move once they're not being picked.

I'm more and more convinced that if we sell De Gea, we'll back in this thread next year saying we need a new number 1. Henderson has fundamental technical issues that IMO means he will never reach De Gea's best level. Which is the calibre of player that should be United number 1.

I just hope we don't have this thread again next year. Get rid of De Gea and replace him with a top level goalie or go with Henderson 1st choice.

Don't think Henderson has showed anything to make him look like he should be our first choice. De Gea has his faults but still think he's better.

And if we keep DDG we'll be having the same conversation too. Whats your point? We all know we are not getting a GK this summer.

I'm yet to see anything from Henderson in a United shirt to suggest he's anything more than a capable number 2.

I'm backing David to turn his form around this season. He's hit rock bottom but he's got the tools required to be what he knows he can be.

Hendo to be our cup goalie.

I'd put my house on this prediction!

Whoever we go with, I think that it would be a terrible decision to stick with two goalkeepers again. Ole has to make a decision one way or another and stick with it. It undermines both keepers to know that a single mistake might see them on the bench for months.

I'm not convinced. He's got world class talent, for sure, but I'm not convinced he's got the mindset to go along with it.

This is of course based on minimal info/observations, but he doesn't inspire confidence currently.

I think Heaton will be no. 3 just like Romero was. He probably came in due to friend's recommendations.

Don't see anything wrong with having more good keepers around. Look at Chelsea. They won the Champ league with a keeper who's brought in as a no 2.

I am divided. He doesn't touch an in form DDG but i did want him between the sticks when DDG’s form dipped. Theres always a hype about a mildly talented english player when they appear in the premier league. The kind of hype that causes Arsenal to bid £43m for Ben White.

Imo Henderson is the next in the line of Ben Fosters, Sam Johnstones, Tom Heatons. decent premier league keeper but not a United No1.

That's a definite possibility. In fact I think it's more likely than Henderson actually grabbing the spot and becoming out long term #1.

However the thing is that the chance of Henderson stepping up and claiming that role properly is higher than De Gea doing so. De Gea simply isn't good enough anymore. He's had three seasons of average to downright poor performances which has cost us time and time again. His atrocious finish to the season was the main reason we didn't make the top four in 18/19. In 19/20 he cost us in one or two of the semi-final losses (let in two poor goals in the FA Cup semi and arguably could have done better for the second goal in the Europa League semi). His cowardice (I hate using that word but there's no other way to describe his effort for Leipzig's third goal) knocked us out of the CL this season, and then he did the identical thing a month or two later in the league. I don't want to 'blame' him for our loss in the Europa final but he barely seemed to even try to save half the opposition penalties. That's just the big goals that have directly cost us and knocked us out of competitions, not even mentioning the goals that we concede because he refuses to come out for crosses or put himself in positions he might get clattered.

Henderson probably isn't going to be the answer but De Gea definitely isn't. So we should give Henderson the season to show what he can do, install him as definite #1 so he can settle and play his natural game without having to look over his shoulder (goalkeeper is the one position where competition for the spot doesn't tend to work well). Then if he hasn't stepped up we can look to buy somebody to come in and command that spot next season.

starting to remind me of that three-way then two-way battle between Bosnich, Van Der Gouw and Taibi during the 1999/2000 season.

We're going to go into next season with a #1 who is not good enough, aren't we?
