Gaming Nintendo Switch

Still undecided on this machine. First time in my life I'm not buying a Nintendo machine at launch. Been stung too many times by them and their shoddy game support and aftercare to dive in during the first wave full of hope and optimism.

The portability, the new Mario Kart and the fear there will be a mass migration from the Wii U MK8 will be the deciding factors for me on if I go in early.

It always feels like Nintendo shaft you for being loyal as they always turn a trickle of games into practically nothing at all at some point in the life of their home systems. Am I right in thinking they're dropping the 3ds and migrating all support to the Switch? If that is the case, I think there's more hope for this machine than there's been in a Nintendo system for a long, long time.

There are still a few upcoming 3DS games, but since the Switch is both handheld and console it'll be everything on this at some point.

I wonder whether all those smaller companies who heavily supported the 3DS will be allowed a niche in the Switch market. It would make for a wonderfully colourful and expansive catalogue of games if they are. Funny thing is my 3DS wasn't touched for the first year of its life, and then I discovered all the quirky titles and couldn't put the thing down!

Yeah I'm sure there will be lots of indie games, maybe even more than the 3DS since some developers have said it's the easiest system to develop for, plus ones from other consoles can be ported over more easily.

Fingers crossed anyway!

There should be a lot of support from small companies and indies, with it being apparently incredibly easy and quick to work with, and super cheap dev-kits. The Snake Pass guys reckon they were able to port over a functional version of the game to their Switch kit in a week.

There's an upcoming Nintendo Direct just about indie games on the Switch IIRC.

Really not sure how many more of those 9 lives Nintendo have left. They're putting so many eggs in this basket and are seemingly abandoning the standalone portable market in favour of this hybrid, so they really need this machine to be a success!

I'm typing this and talking myself into buying one straight away! Must resist

You're a late adapter, right? Do you have any doubts about this machine?

Thanks for the info. I'll be tuning into that Direct. I've purposely avoided this thread and most of the info about the machine because of buying into the hype on too many of their previous machines and then being hung out to dry, but I must admit, I am curious now that launch is just around the corner.

Yep, tomorrow!

I'd like to get one at launch and would have kept my preorder if I could afford it at the moment.

Dunno about doubts. After the Wii U you've obviously got to be a bit cautious, but from what I've seen they've learned from some of the mistakes they made with the Wii U, mostly the advertising which was just terrible looking back and comparing.

For me and my taste in games, taking away any third party/indie support, there are always at least somewhere around 10-20 first/second party games worth getting on any Nintendo system, so with the handheld/console combination inflating that number I have no doubts that there's going to be enough for me whenever I get it.

It will be the moment they put a main series Pokemon on it.

Big mistake not making Zelda BOTW exclusive, it seems.

There's already at least 15 announced games I'm interested in, some are multiplats, but if they run well on it, how could I chose another system to the one I can carry everywhere with me.

I've noticed a recent trend of indie games getting physical releases, especially the PS4 and Vita. If that happens with the Switch I'll be getting plenty

Win-win for you then! I wish it was the same for me, but I'm playing less and less new generation games with each iteration of every console I buy. Even if Nintendo would drop a constant stream of gems I'd be happy, but their recent M.O. has been to drop a few amazing games and then just fritter out and make promises that they then shuffle off to the next-next gen machine.

I'll spare you my moaning, I realise I'm digressing into a rant with every post!

I've decided to keep my preorder - Zelda looks amazing, so I can't not have it. Thing is that I have a PS4 and XOne, so the standard big budget shooters etc I will never play one the Switch.

The problem with Nintendo has been for 2 decades, past Zelda and Mario, they just don't make anything close to enough games to warrant anything but being being a supplementary console - although the positive is they continually do things that push boundaries outside of computer power/graphics - can't think of anyone else that could have produced Mario Galaxy, Spatoon or Skyward Sword.

I guess you just have to accept that per game, having solely a Nintendo isn't the wisest investment but at their best, there's nobody better. Well that's the way I look at it.

Yes indeed. Pokemon would be the killer, mass migration game. Frustating thing is Nintendo have it in them to go right back to the top of the pile if they have a strategy in place for their assault on the market.

I was weighing up getting Zelda for the Wii-U, funnily enough. I'll wait and see what the differences are before making my choice. Although I don't like the idea of sitting on a soon to be discarded machine.

Isn't one of the crucial reasons the indies and small companies can do what they do is because they've no overheads or issues concerning real-world manufacturing etc. to concern themselves with? I'm surprised to hear they're making physical releases if that is the case.

Yeah, but lots of people either double dip and buy both if they like the game enough, or like me don't buy digital games at all and so without the physical option wouldn't buy it. Either way it's a bit of extra money to be made, especially since they don't have to make as many copies as big budget AAA games.

F-Zero, Metroid, Pilotwings, Starfox (a proper successor to the SNES version!) are all well overdue a showing on a new machine!

I'm looking forward to Friday. It does look like. A nice piece of kit

Anyone know when the reviews for Zelda will be out?

It'll be my only game

Final reviews with a score will be out Thursday. Early impressions without any scores already out now.

I'm really tempted to get one but would probably only be for Zelda so may not be worth it. What does everyone think?

EDIT: Do you think they will have more 3rd party support or same old? Also what are the chances they will make a new Mario Maker (with additional features and items etc)?

Tempted to get this but will wait for price to drop.

Yep. Never played Retro City Rampage but this looks cool.
It's one of those ones I keep saying "must play that", but never end up getting.
Flipping Death looks interesting, Mr Shifty and of course Shakedown look good too.
I played the other game by the Flipping Death crowd, Stick It To The Man, and didn't think it was much good, though the style is nice.

Mr Shifty might be, though, to be fair.

EDIT: Toejam and Earl is in there....

I will most likely buy the Switch in the future(probably 1 year after the release), but I don't know if I can wait that long to play Zelda BOTW. I'm basically stuck with 3 options:

1. Buy the Switch ASAP and take a "risk"(there's a chance it wont deliver on the things I'm hoping for).
2. Buy BOTW for Wii U, knowing full well that the graphics and performance are much better on the Switch, a console that I will most likely buy just a year later.
3. Wait until I'm ready to buy the Switch and get BOTW then.

None of options are ideal to be honest:(

What I want from the Switch:

1. Language options

I will probably buy the Switch while on vacation in Japan. My Japanese is OK, but I still prefer English settings.

2. AC adapter
I want to be able to buy an European AC adapter(for my Japan-bought Switch) without having to buy the whole "kit"(dock, HDMI-cable etc).

3. Smooth virtual console
The virtual console for the Wii U had some color issues with the retro games(SNES, N64 etc). The colors were too dark, so I hope they can fix this now.

4. Gamecube games for the virtual console
This would be incredible. Particularly if they give us Melee.

5. Annual FIFA games

I love FIFA games. I hope EA keeps making FIFA games for the Switch until the next console comes out, and don't just stop after a couple of games because they don't earn enough money. I will gladly buy each installment.

Early reviews of the system are coming out and people don't seem impressed, IGN to go on and score it 6.7/10.

The main issues are obvious, a lack of games no basic entertainment apps (how the hell do you release a portable without a web browser or Netflix in 2017), more than a few people having issues with the left joycon Bluetooth connection (no day 1 patch applied yet to be fair) and pretty poor battery life.

There's no excuses they've had time and this is what they delivered, a rushed concept that comes up short as a console compared to its rivals. I'm glad I didn't pre order, a blind man could see how rushed this piece of shit is.

To be honest, if you buy a Nintendo console you don't get it for the technical specs, it is all about the games. If they produce excellent first party games like Zelda, Mario, Mario Kart, Metroid, Donkey Kong etc.

I think a lot of the main issues from reviews are lack of power and battery life issues. The games will make up for this but they also need strong 3rd party support this time too.
