Gaming Nintendo Switch

Shield Tab isn't as portable as this though(is is quiet portable, mind), or as easily dockable to use on tv, or able to switch between the two instantly. That's not to mention the game options or controllers.
Yeah. You could argue that, if the price is going to remain this high, they shouldn't have gone down this road of a hybrid. If it's a £150 tablet but you need £100 of accessories to use it (dock & side controllers), then that's a bit silly.

But then maybe it's only so high because they know they're going to sell out for six months anyway

Honestly, with their back catalogue of games, especially WiiU games which no one has played, I think it would be harder for them to make a failure of this.

There are compromises inherent to all three of these configurations. If you use it mostly docked as a home console, the screen is going to waste and the mobile hardware makes the system underpowered relative to competitors. If you use it mostly as a portable, the battery life will suffer and the games may not be ideally designed for handheld play. If you use it as a multiplayer rig on the go — well, there aren’t really any competitors in this space, but I can at least confirm that Mario Kart 8 doesn’t play as well with half a Joy-Con as it does with a full controller.

But these compromises don’t feel as profound as those inherent to the Wii U, a system built around a single idea at great expense without the software ideas to back it up. The Switch offers countless ways to play, and almost all of the games demoed today work with several of them.

Also, I can't believe how bad 1-2-Switch looks. Considering what a smash Wii Sports was and still is.

You'd have thought they'd bank on the games selling it, but with about 4 at launch(apparently), that seems a tad daft too.

As Havek said, if it was from Gameseek you will be getting if for £198. Game i think advertised it at £199
Game had it at £999 to save themselves from looking stupid. I thought it would be £249.

I'm going to think about this before I get it on release day

So I won't be charged if I pre-order from Amazon right? Least getting will allow me to decide over the next 2 months if I really want one.

Apparently confirmed that the monthly game with the subscription will disappear after one month

That's crazy

They must know people like trophies

I realise it's not for everyone but it's a popular thing for many

Super Mario Run has them, so I wouldn't be surprised if they're in there somewhere. From what I can remember, they didn't show anything about the interface/operating system and how that works.

The new Mass Effect comes out 2 weeks later, we will see PS4/XB1 packages with Mass Effect and probably 1-2 other games for £279.

It's going to struggle like feck after the initial hype, can you imagine if the new Zelda is turd and reviews badly, they're done.

So are these prices (£60 for a fecking game) just RRP? Can we expect a drop nearer release?

I'm guessing they'd drop to £40-£50. But those remastered games should be £30 not £50.

It sounds like the UK allocation of this is nearly sold out. Tesco and Amazon are completely sold out, with Game no longer being able to guarantee a launch console.

Disclaimer:
I'm not gonna focus too much on the hardware. Nintendo hasn't really cared about having amazing specs for a long time, and the fanbase has never been bothered by this fact either. I'm also not gonna focus too much on the price of the actual console, as I think it's pretty fair. Among Nintendo consoles throughout history, only the Gamecube has been significantly cheaper if you adjust for inflation.

What I like:

1. Three different game modes

Stationary, tabletop and handheld? Say what you want: this is revolutionary! I always dreamt about these possibilities, and now someone finally delivers. Thanks Nintendo!

2. FIFA(!) and other third-party games
My console philosophy has always been the following: if Nintendo had FIFA and GTA, then the console war would be a complete walk-over from my point of view. Now I actually get one of the two, and the most important one at that! This effectively kills the Playstation for me. GTA and great specs aren't enough to beat Nintendo's exclusives and FIFA. Not to mention: I can play these games in handheld mode! Sayonara, Sony.

3. Good default battery
3 hour handheld playtime on a heavy game like BOTW is way better than expected.

4. The Joy-Con
Not only is the concept smart, but it effectively provides you with two controllers in one. Brilliant.

5. Region free games
At.fecking.last! It's always annoyed me how games are region-locked. It's nice to see a big console break away from this. This seems very unlike Nintendo, so it's a very positive surprise.

6. Cartridges
This is may sound stupid, but I've missed cartridges. I just like them more than discs, somehow..

What I DON'T like:

1. Paying for online

This is pretty much the only big criticism I have, but boy is it a big one! I know that it's a business and all that, but it still pisses me off. This is even worse than the trend of adding a million DLCs to a game. I hate this idea so much, that I might consider not buying the console despite all the great stuff I wrote above.

2. Needlessly expensive pro controller
Another thing I've always hated(and this applies to all consoles), is that a second controller is not included when you buy the console. But it's always been like this and it's not gonna change, so fair enough. Having said that though: why make the controller cost 70 fecking USD? That's almost 25% of the price of the whole console, just for an extra controller. Greedy bastards!

3. The good games are generally still far away
BOTW, while not exclusive for the Switch, looks incredible. But apart from that, it seems that all the most popular/interesting games are relatively far away from being launched. You risk being stuck with just one good game for nearly a year(at least based on the info we've gotten so far). That's not good enough.

What I still WANT to see:

1. A good virtual console for Gamecube

I love that Nintendo respects nostalgia and has a virtual console. But based on their job on the Wii U, there's a lot of room for improvement. It's rumored that they are working on a virtual console for Gamecube, so this will be their chance to redeem themselves. They need to do this well, because the most active and passionate fighting game community(Melee) has waited for this for nearly a decade now. Make it happen!

2. Good online connectivity
This has been an unnecessary weak point for too long. I can forgive outdated hardware and graphics. Lag and lack of effective multitasking while ingame though, is unforgiveable. It's about time they fixed it now. Especially seeing as we'll be paying extra for gaming online!

3. Support for old controllers(Wii U, Gamecube etc)
I love the Wii U pro controller and I want to keep using it, goddammit! I'll buy an adapter if necessary. Just make it happen!

Overall:
I'm leaning way more towards 'positive' than 'negative', but the online thing is a massive blow. Had it not been for that, then I'd be extremely hyped. As of now, I'm just mildly excited. They're doing a lot of great things, but they're also making a couple of big mistakes.

$90 for a second dock which is, as far as we know, a charging station & HDMI pass-thru.

I wouldn't get hyped over FIFA @Dir Wangem apparently its the PS3/360 engine since Switch doesn't support Frostbite.....thanks Nintendo.

On another note they revealed it takes 3 hours to fully charge the battery, earlier they said the battery life could last between 2.5-6 Hours.....it could take longer to charge the battery than to actually use it. One of the worst console reveals I've ever seen honestly you could pick holes in everything.

Cancelling mine, if it was £250 including a decent game I'd be tempted but not paying £280

@Castia

PS3 engine is more than good enough for me. I just want a new-ish FIFA game with online play. It's also nice to have FIFA as a party game option.

It's beyond moronic to buy the Switch with the purpose of using it predominantly as a handheld. It is however very nice to have the option. I will probably only use the handheld option on business trips, long vacations(predominantly on the plane), and trips back to my hometown. Roughly 3 hours of heavy gametime before re-charging is more than good enough. Having to charge the thing for 3 hours is not an issue for me at all(especially seeing as you can play while charging). I'm not that addicated to gaming.

Has Nintendo ever launched a console with a decent game included? Don't they usually start doing this a year or so after the launch?

As for price: you do realise that if we adjust for inflation, there have only been 3 cheaper consoles in history so far:

1. Gamecube(about 20 USD cheaper)
2. Dreamcast(about 12 USD cheaper)
3. Wii(less than 2 USD cheaper)

Super Mario World was included with the SNES in the US. Not sure about other than that though.

Is that shock at the quality or the fact there was only three games?
Quality

3 games id pretty much give a 10 to

1st two are obvious. But super tennis remains one of my most favourite sports games of all time

Source?

It uses Type-C, so i find that hard to believe

Same as every Nintendo hardware release. Including wii u

We won't really know until xmas this year if this thing is gonna sink or swim

Was it on here or maybe twitter I read that skyrim is going to be an Xbox 360 port rather than the new remastered version?

I admire @Dir Wangem optimism, and because I'm a fool I will buy the thing on release day. But the reveal was worse than I could ever have anticipated. It was bad when I read about it this morning. Even worse since I got home this evening and watched a load of stuff about it. I can't believe how apparently out of touch they are

Have a look here. Also that charge time might be whilst the unit is sleeping.

Think this will have an initial rush and then die. Fifa is rumoured to be an older version with updated player rosters and not just a ps360 port. Also you need a phone app for online chat.

What, exactly, dies this mean? What do you mean "Switch doesn't support Frostbite"?

I don't know where you are getting your information, but I suggest you find new places.
