Gaming Nintendo 3DS vs PS Vita thread.

Oh for sure, we'll definitely play again another time, I'd play again now, but I'm going watching some NFL.

It's a shame EA couldn't make Soccer/13/14 all compatible for multiplayer, since they're literally the exact same game....

This is interesting. Why is Europe not interested in handhelds (Japan goes nuts over them), and also why then in terms of market share is it the place where the VITA is most successful?

It's odd!

They are under the right circumstances. EG: "2DS was comfortably the UK's best selling console last week, and that's without combining the sales of 3DS and 3DS XL." http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/2ds-enjoys-half-term-sales-spike/012361

As long as the price is right and there are the right kinds of games there people will be interested. I think it's just Japan is so constantly handheld crazy it seems like everyone else isn't in comparison. I remember when Bioshock Infinite and Luigi's Mansion 2 launched, in at least France and Germany Luigi's Mansion outsold Bioshock every week from launch.

The most surprising thing about that graphic to me is that so many people are still buying PSPs...
It's very cheap these days and has a big library. I reckon 2DS is aimed at taking away its share to some extent though because it's priced similarly in most countries (PSP should be around 80 and 2DS you might get for £100) and has a much bigger and better library obviously. I have twin nephews and I want to bring them nice gifts for Christmas as they are both pretty cool and what is better for a 7-year old than a handheld? I can't get them two Vitas as it'd be too expensive so my choice is between 2DS and a PSP - price is important in these cases which is why both will sell well during this period.

BTW, I have managed to hold on playing Luigi's Mansion until Halloween as planned and only started it properly yesterday - it helps that 3DS has had dozens of games in the meantime which have kept me properly occupied. It's such an amazing game and has such a fantastic distinct atmosphere, brings back the good old memories of GameCube - and all of it on a handheld, it's amazing.

And it's sold over 3 million copies so hopefully we wont have to wait 12 years again for the next one :D

It's not the easiest game though, I thought it would be a breeze but it can be tricky at times can't it?

We'll have new Layton, Zelda and Bravely Default until the end of year. And I still have so many games to complete, even the previous Layton which I have put aside for a while. I still can't get over how large 3DS library is these days, it's difficult to put it down. I'll probably want to finish Fire Emblem again pretty soon too (I need to get a new SD card mind because it won't fit on the current one with Phoenix Wright there).

Yep, I think it'll be a repeat of the DS for me. I wont be able to buy every new game I want as soon as it's released so I'll have to go back and look at some of the games I missed in the future.

Anyway, I barely played any original DS games and would like to catch up - what should I get when I have free time? Dragon Quest IX, both Zeldas, Hotel Dusk and Golden Sun look extremely interesting.

RPGs mainly I think but other genres might also pick my interest. :)

GTA Chinatown Wars is apparently pretty good?

Ok, well RPGs aren't my main thing, but I do have a few that are good;

Dragon Quest VI
Pokemon series - I have Pearl, Diamond, Heart Gold and White. Heart Gold is probably my favourite.
Chrono Trigger
Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Insider Story

Ones that I don't have but have heard good things about;

Radiant Historia
The World Ends With You
Etrian Odyssey series
The other Dragon Quest games
Shin Megami Tensai (there are a few, I think they're all apparently good)
The Dark Spire
Rune Factory 3
Lufia: Curse of the Sinistrals

Now I'll list some platform/action games since that's what I know best;

Kirby Super Star Ultra
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow (seriously, get this. The music, the levels, the enemies... it's all brilliant)
Castlevania: Portrait Of Ruin
Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia
Contra 4
Yoshi's Island DS
Henry Hatsworth
Dementium: The Ward (there's a second one too which is apparently good)
Resident Evil: Deadly Silence
Kirby Mass Attack
The Legendary Starfy
Both Advance Wars games
Aliens: Infestation
Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime
Hotel Dusk
Both Zelda games

There are a lot more but they're good to start off.

EDIT: Yeah, GTA is good.

Thanks mate, I can always count on you with Nintendo stuff.

It's a hard game but brilliant. Possibly my fav handheld game.

I got addicted to it and got every single collectible in the game.

Its atmosphere is among the best I've ever witness in a game. It's just so incredibly cool and makes you want to play it over and over again.

BTW I lost my Mario 3D Land cartridge and it doesn't look like I'm going to find it. I've already completed the game but would like to play it again so I'll probably pick up a new one this week. Resident Evil Revelations is on sale at eShop too, only £15 and I would like to have another playthrough so I'll probably pick that one up too unless I get a physical copy (seeing as it takes up more than 2GB on a card I might do it anyway).

Graphics are shocking and frame rates dropped a lot for me, but I had lots of fun for a few hours one day on it. Must admit though, I think that was half fueled by nostalgia.

Haven't played it since.

EDIT: basically, if you could go and pick up a PS2 and Battlefront 2 on that, and only play single player, and enjoy it - then you'll enjoy this.
I did, I just haven't got any replay value out of it but I probably could if I made an effort.

I never played them on the PS2, so I couldn't say, just looking for a fun action or shooter to mess about with. Though scrolling along I spotted Ridge Racer Type 4, that could be fun too.

Dude, you seriously missed out. But I don't know how it'd hold up now, especially playing the PSP version on the Vita. It was good at the time it came out, but even that is 8 years old. If it's under 5£ I'd say give it a shot, not too sure otherwise.

I downloaded Ridge Racer - I use to love playing that and Burnout on PSP, but it was awful in comparison to racing games that are on Vita since (Wipeout, Need for Speed). I seriously recommend redownloading Crash Team Racing since you said you were a big fan - it still holds up as a fecking brilliant game. Just make sure you edit the buttons straight away, else you'll be in reverse cam whenever you're touching the back touch panel.

Tbh, I haven't played many Star Wars games, I played that PSX fighter, one of the KOTOR's, and a PSX Episode One game.I'll check the price.

Ahh, screw that then, I have NFS and Wipeout. Could definitely go for CTR, was thinking of it too. Though, if I have a look, I still have the disc for it, somewhere. I bet it suits the Vita well anyway.

It's very different from other Star Wars games so that doesn't really matter. It's hard to compare it, but imagine if single player Battlefield was through objectives on multiplayer battlefield. Open maps with battles (vehicles and foot) going on around you.

Crash Team Racing suits the Vita just fine, absolutely brilliant game and still holds up well today, even though I have Sonic Transformed to compare it too. Buy it.

Also, the Vita needs a NHL game.

EDIT: All the PSP Star Wars games are a tenner a pop.

Yeah, I'm not sure it holds up well enough for 10£ especially for a first time player. Probably not.

feck it, CTR downloading, worth it at five euro, even if I do have the disc.

I'm gonna load it up now just to confirm that I was justified in telling you it was awesome on the Vita. haha.

I completed the Adventure mode on it again anyway - well, the races. I've only completed the adventure mode 100% once and it was feckING HARD. I'm not sure I'm up to the kart standards that I use to be, when I was 9.

I'm none too sure did I finish it back in the day, though I played it a lot. Had a multitap too, so done the 4 player arena battles.

Yeah, that's the only problem with the Vita version - no multiplayer :(

You'll be able to download it on a PS3 for local multiplayer though remember as these games are all cross-platform purchases.

I just tested, you actually could do multiplayer on the Vita. You can 'assign' to a second controller via the Vita's own system settings mid-game. Take it in turns to shoot eachother on Battle mode while the other person can't dodge haha.

Tbh, I'd be none too worried about multiplayer on it now, be hard enough to round p four guys!

I'd get multiple flight transfers for a Crash Team Racing multiplayer marathon.

Btw, when you change the settings to remote the back touch panels from assigned buttons (if you do) bear in mind that X is to accelerate on CTR. I changed it at first to R, but that means that you can't powerslide anymore so I had to change it back.
I fiddled around, tried using the right analogue stick as the accelerate button but that became an issue as you had to move your to press O for shooting.

Maybe back touch panel would be perfect for this, hold down to accelerate, or use it for the power sliding - but I'm not a huge fan of that touch panel I find it awkward for even the most simplest of stuff.
