Gaming Nintendo 3DS vs PS Vita thread.

Hmm.

Persona 4 is a freaking brilliant game, it's probably the only game I'd want a Vita for right now (even though I've already got it on the PS2).

Anyways, I bought Virtue's Last Reward yesterday, it's the sequel to 9 hours, 9 persons, 9 doors, and so far so good.

From what I can remember, Persona 4 was a great game. Not as memorable or as well structured as Ocarina, but great none-the-less.

Typical from Weaste though to bring up reviews about games he's never played. Try making your own mind up!

Very different types of games mind you, Zelda the large, open area action adventure and Persona the classic turn based JRPG. In my opinion Persona 4 is the more memorable (could be because I didn't play Ocarina when it first came out) and has a fantastic murder mystery story. I can't say it enough times, any JRPG fan should play that game!

Interesting that the two highest rated games are remakes of older games and not new titles.

Yes, that's why I didn't directly compare them. But you are right of course, epic games.

And yes, not playing Ocarina originally will skew your thinking on it, but at least playing the extremely impressive update would at least show why it's generally considered one of the best games of all time. Imagine playing something like that back in '96 after all the great 16-bit classic rpgs of the day. It was and remains a truly memorable moment, possibly only topped that generation by the very first boot up of Mario64.

The 3ds has been a huge let down.

Well the depends on the individual and reasons for buying it now, doesn't it?

The only let down was the stupid decision of not putting a second analogue stick on it. I hate how ugly my Circle Pad Pro looks.

With a proper flagship Pokémon title this year, it should really take off in sales this year.

Just a shame Nintendo make it impossible to acquire cheaper digital copies of their games, like Sony and Microsoft, because of their ridiculous prices and lack of an alternative currency in their e-shop.

The 3ds has been a huge let down.

I've only owned 4 3DS games, I do wonder why I bought the thing sometimes.

But if I owned a Vita I think I'd only have Persona 4, Uncharted and maybe Katamari.

Neither one really stand out above the other in terms of amount of good games available, 3DS probably just edges it, at least for games that I'd want to play.

Link to the Past is one of my favourite games of all time, and if I had played Ocarina back in the day then definitely I'd see it differently. Yeah it's still a great game and I can see why people hold it in such high regard but sadly I never owned a N64, it was one or the other and PS1 won.

When I finally got round to playing Super Mario 64 my first thought was "it's not as good as Super Mario Sunshine", that's probably akin to blasphemy

I don't think 3DS sales are at all slow... Pokémon is a system seller of course so you're right in the sense that sales will elevate even more, but the 3DS is currently smashing everything else (on a worldwide total at least). Last week's sales saw 210,000~ 3DS Consoles shifted, with second place being the PS3 back on 138,000~. In Japan at least, the 3DS has already sold more consoles in two years than the PS3 has in its lifetime of availability there. I know this is only in Japan (these figures seem to be the most easy to find) but they love a bit of Sony over there almost as much as Nintendo so it's a great achievement, especially for a handheld.

tl;dr 3DS has sold about 30million units in two years, pretty good in my book. If a console gets to 100million again in this day and age (especially handheld) I'll be really surprised. Times have changed.

Got both Pokémon titles, Animal Crossing, Luigi's Mansion, and Monster Hunter all on pre-order for 3DS, so this year is already looking rather good. The only slight worry is that with Pokémon due for release, Nintendo will probably rely on that to boost the sales after the up and coming titles leading up to and through Summer. So, we're probably unlikely to see anything from the Metroid, Mario, or Zelda franchises until next year.

No handheld is going to sell more units than DS simply because of growing smartphone market. People will be reluctant to the idea of paying $200+ for a system and then shelling out $30 or more for each game when they can play games on a device they already have for a dollar or two, and currently in terms of quality they are catching up with what handhelds can offer. The likes of Modern Combat 4, Ravensword 2 or Real Racing 3 wouldn't look out of place on a Vita.

As for Vita, 2013 looks really poor for it. I'm not even sure they have a single interesting announcement for the whole year outside of European version of Persona 4. They've gone quiet on the subject of Bioshock. Maybe Killzone is going to be good.

What games do you have for the Vita? I WANT one, but can't justify it due to the lack of games.. I still have lots of games to play on my 3ds.

Do you think it has a future?

There isn't a lack of games, there are loads of them in every genre, and it plays PSP and PS1 games.

It's probably the only device for example where you will be able to play every Final Fantasy up to 10.

Luigi's Mansion has local and online multiplayer :)

In my latest demo session, Nintendo laid out a big surprise -- Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon has a full-blown multiplayer -- and it has local, download, and online play! In multiplayer, one to four different versions of Luigi climb the "scarescraper," a tower of semi-randomly generated room sets. You can choose from among scarescrapers with 5, 10, 25, or endless numbers of floors and three difficulty levels, normal, hard, and expert.

I spent some time playing Hunter Mode, which suggests there are other multiplayer types that they haven't yet revealed. In Hunter Mode, players must clear the entire floor of ghosts within a limited time. The gameplay is simple -- explore the mansion, find the ghosts, and suck them up with your vacuum. Time is relatively short, so it works best when players spread out to uncover the ghosts and then pair up to bring them down. Players generally play cooperatively, but in Zelda: Four Swords style, players also compete for coins.

Wait, we don't? I thought it's out around Friday.

It's weird. Surely it's not that tough to release the game on both continents simultaneously? It's going to collide with Luigi's Mansion in Europe then.

Don't know really, I hardly ever understand release dates. I guess it might depend on how many languages they have to translate it into.

Luigi's Mansion is out in March, so I guess they'll space them out at least a month.

Luigi's Mansion is going to be epic. I'm stockpiling these games without finishing them yet because I have this rule of not playing them at home when I have PS3 and Wii there. I only play them when I'm away and I've not had that much traveling in the past two months so I'm left with Assassins Creed, LittleBigPlanet and NFS Most Wanted for Vita and Professor Layton and Paper Mario for 3DS barely touched. The minute I re-start traveling on a regular basis I'll have a lot to do.

Yeah I can't wait for Luigi's Mansion, it looks great. It'll probably be the first "new" game I've bought in ages. I made a plan not to buy any current games for a while since I was buying quite a lot, so I've got lots to catch up on. Plus with the so far announced games for 2013 there's lots to look forward to :D

Also I hope Miiverse for the 3DS doesn't take too much longer, I'm looking forward to trying it out.

I might buy the Nitendo DS just because it has Pokemon.

And also the kind of games PSP has are better on a console/big screen than handheld.

Donkey Kong Country 3D  - Absolutely loved the released SNES one on GBC, big hopes for that title, and it's already coming this summer.

So new Mario & Luigi RPG, DKC3D, Luigi's Mansion, Pokemon, Castlevania Lords of Shadow: Mirror of Fate coming this year, probably more too, sexy!

...yeeeah ok

Anyway, I haven't looked at this yet, but Mario and Luigi rpg? Finally a sequel to Super Mario RpG  (Paper Mario aside of course)

More like an sequel to Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time & Bowser's Inside Story I'd imagine

Looking forward to Donkey Kong and Mario & Luigi :) Haven't played a Mario Golf game in years either so looking forward to trying that out.

Not related to the Nintendo Direct but the other day I got Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy. I'm enjoying it so far. I haven't played any of the previous ones in the series so I can't compare it, but like I said I'm enjoying it so would recommend it.

If any DS or 3DS owners like action-adventure platformers and puzzle games then I recommend Henry Hatsworth. I got it a few days ago and have been playing it quite a lot. It's a lot of fun and a good mix of the two genres.

For Vita owners, in PS Plus you can download Lumines, Wipeout, Uncharted and Gravity Rush for free now. Awesome set of games for a very low amount, it cost me 39 PLN (less than £10) to subscribe for three months.

Oh and 'hardcore gamers' indeed, some people need to have a word with themselves

What are you talking about, man? Media Molecule's clay sculpting thing, being able to make your creations dance with a Move controller and then sharing the video online. That's the hardest of the hardcore!

Nice pickup, I'm sure you'll enjoy it ;)

Just to add to my previous post, Castlevania seems pretty good so far, and there's also a demo for Monster Hunter up on the eShop, too.
