Gaming Nintendo 3DS vs PS Vita thread.

Oh they can play around with it, I think the BOM is something like 160 or something like that. It's only just been launched in Japan and sold over 0.5m with no Japanese interest software as such when 3DS got 2 Marios and a Monster Hunter. I doubt they will be knee jerk with it, they'll give it at least 3 months in the West first. Sony can't afford to lose money on anything anymore.

It's just a lot of money for nothing really new, plus it's the size of a house, that doesn't exactly lend it to convenience. It's a strange one really and will be interesting to see what happens over here.

I've been a huge Nintendo fan since I was about 7 years old (nearly 24 years ago). I've owned and subsequently loved every console, that is until i got a 3ds!

Every time I play it I have to turn the 3d off or I feel sick. That is totally unacceptable in my book. I feel let down by Nintendo.

I can't wait to pick up a Vita. The inclusion of the second stick is a major selling point.

Price drop didn't help 3DS, software did. Sony are not going to drop the price.

You serious? It went from 250$ to 170$. At the very least you could've said it's a combination of things.
The significant price drop helped immensely along with their system sellers.

Sony's VITA doesn't have a system seller, it hasn't got a gimmick and it's expensive. I know they can't drop the price too much (or at all) because of the hardware but Sony is not Apple. Long gone are the days of Sony's brand appeal.

I really want Vita to be a success and have a great support but I can't see it. Not at that price.

If you want to play games like COD, then a second stick is vital. Given the wifi/3G capabilities on the Vita, if they could get COD working on it, 60FPS, with online gameplay roughly on par with PS3's, it will sell a truckload. There are enough COD addicts, who'd jump at the chance to play their beloved game on the go.

It's not their fault. They wanted to make it 3D without the need to use glasses, obviously not all people will be able to use it. I got used to it after an hour or so and have no problem with it at all now, even when traveling on a bus or a tram.

I really, really want to get Resident Evil tomorrow but I don't think the will have it at launch in Poland. I will probably have to wait a few days before I can find it anywhere. :(

Err ok. I'm still not sure if he was being serious though.

Mine was dispatched yesterday. <£30 and the second stick (plus extra buttons) that people apparently want.

Can't get better than that!

100% serious mate. The addition of the second stick will make a big big difference to every game.

I'll be buying the add on for the 3ds as well.

I have just finished the main story in Mario.

Anyway, I hope they release Luigi's Mansion as quickly as possible. My favorite GameCube game by some distance along with Resident Evil.

Only the games that need it, surely? Anyway it's there now. Are you getting Revelations btw? I ordered it from Zavvi but I'm not sure how reliable they are.

The whole Nintendo letting you down though, what's that about? The machine works perfectly fine and does exactly what it says on the tin. It's a big shame if you are just one of those unlucky people that just can't get used to it, but hey at least the games are still great :)

Well what sort of egg head are you then? ;)

Not easy to find accurate numbers, but...

RSX when all things were done on 90nm at launch probably drew around 75W. So, that's the ballpark a similar machine today would go for. Due to board complexity, it will probably be 128bit buses again, we know nothing about clocks or possible use of EDRAM......

6670 seems too underpowered to me on 32nm unless they want a really small quiet box. 7000 series offers much better performance per watt, but they are way too expensive ATM. They are already on 28nm it seems though, so not much room to bring the power down there. If rumours are true that final test hardware is now on the test production line, it has to be a 6000 series GPU for XBox Next, and it's not going to be a 6970. 6770 at the top of the range, although bandwidth on the 128-bit bus is not good, around 76GB/s. I don't know how that would go in regards to backwards compatibility without EDRAM as in the 360 - 256GB/s thing people quote isn't quite the story, that's just really for the ROPs, shader to daughter die is more in the region of 32GB/s.

Well, I wouldn't have bought it at initial price even after Mario release, at the same time I wouldn't have bought it at reduced price without Mario and Zelda incentive. I guess a lot of people took the same stand, so it's a bit of both.

I was very underwhelmed with DS but I am loving 3DS. Best purchase ever.

What Sony are hoping for is the spotty teenager here, the COD freak, you know, those in their 10s of millions? If VITA is as easy to port to as Sony says, they are hoping that they get the next Black OPs with cross platform multiplayer with the PS3 version. What 15 year old could resist?

According to Reuters Nintendo is expecting an annual operating loss of ¥45 billion ($575 million). Analysts originally forecasted a lost of ¥4.2 billion yen.

Hardware sales are not meeting expectations—though, things could be worse. Back in Oct. 27, 2011, Nintendo forecasted hardware sales at 6 million DS units shipped for 2012, but as of Jan. 26, 2012, changed that number to 5.5 million DS units. For DS software, the forecast changed from 62 million to 59 million units.

On Oct. 27, 2011, Nintendo forecasted 12 million Wii units sold in the 2012 financial year. That number was revised to 10 million units. Wii software was originally forecasted at 100 million. That number was unchanged.

The 3DS is both on the comeback trail, but still underperforming. On Oct. 27, 2011, Nintendo forecasted 16 million 3DS units shipped. That number has been changed to 14 million. For 3DS software, Nintendo forecasted 50 million units shipped. On Jan. 26, 2012, that number was changed to 38 million units ship—a huge drop.

Sheesh that loss overshot the projections a bit didn't it.

Let's all just get one of these:

You're absolutely right mate, only for the games that need it. Uncharted, the inevitable COD/ God of War Vista versions and other games of similar ilk just won't work without the second stick IMO.

The lack of the second stick was my one big issue with the PSP. Games like Ratchett and Clank and God of War were just clumsy to control without it.

I'm definitely going to pick up Revelations on the 3DS though. I'm really looking forward to it.

I absolutely love Nintendo. I'm just disappointed with the 3D side of the 3DS that's all.

It's still a great piece of kit and any console that boasts Ocarina of Time and Super Mario bros. within its gaming collection cannot be bad can it?

I'd love to see Nintendo release some more of the retro games for the 3DS.

A Mario all Stars port and Megaman collection (NES or SNES or even better both!) would be awesome.

On a side note that Neo Geo looks fecking sweet!!

That Neo Geo looks nice, bit too "iPhone-y" though, but still nice. Can you only play those built in 20 games though or can you put some on an SD card too?

I thought it might be there so that it can be used as a media player.

But yes, it seems you will be able to play off the SD card - Google Translate. That might be the worst Google translation ever though, so I might have read it wrong.

New 2D side-scrolling Mario coming to 3DS

...Although there is no logo here, we are planning to release a totally new side-scrolling action Super Mario in 2D as a key title for the Nintendo 3DS in the next fiscal year.

Some news on the new 'Nintendo Network'

41l.jpg

As the final topic of today, I’d like to spend a little time talking about the new network service from Nintendo, which has something to do with the subject of micropayments using NFC that I have just mentioned.

As those of you who have enjoyed playing “Mario Kart 7” that we launched late last year should know, its online competition mode includes the system called “Communities.” Each player can create his or her own online “Community” and decide the rules and conditions of the races to be conducted there, and anyone who enters the designated “Community number,” can join to enjoy the matches there. With that system, the company is offering a new kind of network service, which is different from the network services Nintendo has been offering under the name of Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection.

For “Mario Kart 7,” we have already started using as the name of this new network service…

…“Nintendo Network” Service

The Nintendo Network service is our network platform which will cover the Nintendo 3DS and the Wii U.

Unlike Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, which has been focused upon specific functionalities and concepts, we are aiming to establish a platform where various services available through the network for our consumers shall be connected via Nintendo Network service so that the company can make comprehensive proposals to consumers.

For example, competitions and communication among users, as well as the sales of digital content, will be covered within the Nintendo Network.

For the Nintendo 3DS and the Wii U, we will push forward to make the software compatible with Nintendo Network.

The “Community” matches of “Mario Kart 7” that I have just referred to is one example. As for the sales of downloadable add-on content, “Tobidasu Pricla Kiradeco Revolution” (Japanese title), which Nintendo has already started the download sales to the owners of the Nintendo 3DS, is the first title for which consumers can purchase and download add-on content. We will make available the downloadable add-on content for this Nintendo first-party digital download title in the near future. As for the download sales of add-on content for packaged software, it is expected that “THEATRHYTHM FINAL FANTASY,” which is scheduled to be launched on February 16 by Square Enix Co., Ltd. is going to be the first software title for which applicable music will be sold by Square Enix as downloadable add-on content. While we are on this subject, when we discuss anything relating to add-on content, our remarks are very often reported by the media by their attaching such modifiers or notes as “the ones used for social games.” Please note that Nintendo, as a software maker, does not plan to deploy businesses where our consumers cannot know in advance which item will appear as the result of their payment and they have to repeat the payments and, before they know it, they end up spending a huge amount of money in order to obtain the items they originally wanted to purchase. As a software maker, Nintendo believes that its packaged software should be sold to our consumers in a form so that the consumers will know in advance that they can enjoy playing the software they purchased just as it is. We believe that our consumers will be able to feel more secure if we offer our add-on content as an additional structure in which those who love the game will be able to enjoy it in a deeper way for a prolonged play time.

For the digital sales of the content, we are also considering the future possibility of digital distribution of packaged software, which is often referred to as “software download sales.” This concept was built into the design of the Nintendo 3DS, and we already have the necessary infrastructure. We will prepare the same infrastructure for the Wii U. However, we have not decided the concrete timing of when we will start it. The decision must be made by taking into consideration such factors as the relationship with the wholesalers and retailers, and the best way to be embraced by consumers, as well as the environment surrounding the market and consumers, such as the required memory capacity on consumers’ SD memory cards. However, as an option for the future, the significance of this business field will increase.

Also for the Wii U, we are planning to introduce a personal account system compatible with Nintendo Network. With this, for example, the ease of using a video game system when the hardware is shared by multiple family members, which has been a challenge we needed to tackle, shall be improved, and we will also be able to construct and offer the system by combining a variety of different services and content.

Whether it’s our first-party titles or third parties’ titles, for a number of games, we will actively attempt to achieve compatibility so that our consumers can enjoy our online services that we will deploy under the name of the Nintendo Network.

These are the estimated figures by Nintendo in regard to the sales of each platform in the 3 major markets (what goes on outside of these is rather unknown).

Code:
2011 Hardware Sales

         TOTAL US EU JP

3DS 11.8 4.1 3.5 4.3
360 11.0 7.3 3.7 0.1
PS3 11.0 4.5 4.9 1.5
WII 9.5 4.5 4.0 0.9
NDS 7.5 3.8 3.0 0.7
PSP 5.8 1.4 2.3 2.1
PSV 0.5 0 0 0.5

- US: NPD
- JP: Media Create
- EU: Nintendo's estimates.

Rounded to nearest 100000.

As for hand-helds, it's interesting isn't it? The Japanese do love them, with 3DS and PSP pulling well above their weight in terms of sales in respect to the size of Japan and its population and that of the US and EU. Handhelds in Japan totally outsell the consoles, which is not the case in the US and the EU where there is a much finer balance.

Another point, look how fast the Japanese dumped the NDS and moved to the 3DS, yet in the EU and US it performed basically on par with the 3DS.

US loves the XB360, the Japanese hate the thing, and the Japanese love their PSP and the US hates the thing.

Also, using this and Nintendo data as to their shipments of the 3DS and Sony as to their shipments of the PS3, the rest of the smaller markets (AUS, Mainland Asia, Russia, Middle East, Africa, Latin America, Canada) makes up around 1/5 of the total business, at least in hardware terms.

I got revelations this morning and have had 10 mins with it so far. The graphics really are great and the 3D works well with no signs of framerate issues.

The circlepad pro is chunkier than I thought and it's not particularily comfortable for my size hands, but it works well.

Overall I'm impressed so far.

You're waiting for a 3DS XL aren't you, just so that you have an excuse to buy another one? As for the size of your hands, are you a midget?

Haha I doubt I'd buy another any time soon. And no, my hands are too big, it's taking some getting used to reaching the R button and the extra circle pad is slightly akward for my thumb which means aiming up-right is slightly uncomfortable.

I'll get used to it though :)

On another note the gyroscope aiming is once again a great addition, although they've made a schoolboy error and not allowed simultaneous gyro and stick aiming, which is a bit silly but not serious.

He he he, so on the one hand VITA is too big, but 3DS with that monstrosity attached to it is too small?

I'm trolling you, but as always you know that!
