Nicolas Gaitan

If they want £40m, they can go suck a dick. Even Götze and Hazard will only cost £35-40m and he is definitely a couple of tiers below them.

Is he not a winger anyway? Heard he's been good but do we need a winger? Especially after splashing some dosh on Young.

not gonna happen - they're all Euro cup-tied

While I agree we're not signing this fella, I would be astound and massively disappointed of the club's thinking if a player being cup tied would play any part is us signing or not signing someone in January.

He sometimes plays in a midfield 3 and yes he's a bit like Mata and Silva in that he has the vision to open teams up with a great pass. He's also a good dribbler with great technique. I dont think £25 million is too unreasonable.

By the way, just checked the champions league website

UEFA Champions League - Nicolás Gaitán ? UEFA.com

Gaitan has created the most goals this season with 5 assists in 6 appearances

Edit - Thats 5 of Benfica's 8 goals they scored in the group stage. Also worth pointing out that these assists came against the sides we played against and struggled to score against. So it wouldnt really be a surprise if he has caught Sir Alex's eye

This, Valencia has a 75,000 stadium on hold halfway through construction because they cannot afford to continue, it has pushed the club to the brink so they are not going to be looking at a supposed £30 million player.

Actually Valencia reached a deal this week with a bank in Spain that will see work continue on the new stadium and then the Mestalla land will become theirs. The new stadium is expected to be ready in about 2 seasons and many Valencia fans believe that this will mean that they no longer have to sell their best players each summer like they've ended up doing with Villa, Silva and Mata.

But they still dont have the money to go for a player like Gaitan. Danny Blind is right now saying Valencia's offer for Van Der Wiel is too low so if they end up getting priced out of signing him at 10 million euros (their offer) then we know they arent going to be a realistic factor for players above that

Agreed, bits I've seen of him he looks a lot like Mata / Silva.

Seems like a neat player. Would be cheaper than alternatives. Likely he caught Ferguson's eye...just seems less far fetched to me than Hazard/Gotze stories :).

He might be a good player. But I think spending £25m or more on this lad might not be worth it. If we have decided to spend big, we might as well spend an extra £10m, along with the money we gain by selling players, to try and get someone like Hazard or Götze.

United, who are also monitoring Benfica midfielder Javi Martínez

. I hope he means Javi Martinez, but I think he means Javi Garcia

Not too sure about this. He could be an excellent signing, and I'm sure we can get him, but that price sounds a bit too high for a player who is yet to consistently prove himself at the highest level.

If we were to spend so much and get him in January, then it is nothing but a panic buy. I want to see more consistency from him. He just broke into the scene this year. It will be a huge step up for him to play for Man United and to adjust to the pace of the premier league. I am not convinced yet.

A Portuguese lad I work with absolutely raves about this guy. He's a Benfica fan, seems to know his football very well indeed and he's been mentioning him to me since I started this job in September.

I've yet to commit to asking him if he can play in a midfield two or if he could do it on a cold night in Stoke. Nonetheless I'm courageously placing one foot on the muppet bandwagon and stating that we should sign him on the basis of hearsay and my having watched him for under 200 minutes.

If we do buy Gaitan I imagine the plan will be for him to play as Giggs did a while back, as a left sided playmaker, this would give us two starting wingers with more to their game than the more traditional wing play of Valencia and Young, which in turn allows Fergie to stick with his beloved 4-4-2.

This would leave Ando and Cleverley competing for a spot alongside Carrick and hopefully another DM who will also be competing for a starting spot.

We really don't need another winger.

Spot on.

Well, at least our own Andy Carroll would come a bit cheaper and with a sexier name.

I know this is Twatter, but reliable ITK (as reliable as an ITK gets) @FreddieBoswell7 has quoted the story with "True :)"

Is this serious enough for me to bother watching a youtube compilation and 'Thumbs Up' the first Welcome to Manchester united comment on the page?

Personally I'm still shocked that there's no FM 2012 scout report and no youtube video. The standards of redcafe transfer thread have dwindled, I'm blaming twitter for it.

It seems people including me, where wrong about what United wanted, If he really is a VDV/Nasri/Sneijder type player.
