I'm excited by this guy. I think he could be a really talented CM. Of course it's early days but he looks like he'll be physically big, strong and quick. He presses well. Intelligent movement. Looks for the ball. Good control. Good technique. Good vision. And from his Crewe days we know he has an eye for goal. He could be an all round CM - not a luxury player or simply an AM. He could hopefully become a player who can sit deep for the majority of the game but make adventurous attacking forays at times. I think he is potentially a more orthodox CM than Cleverley or Anderson, although obviously he is young and needs time to learn. For now, he is a great addition having lost Pogba this summer.

I'm struggling to think of a player to compare him to though. No doubt if he was breaking through 10-15 years ago he'd have ended up as a typical English midfielder but I can see him becoming a bit more continental at United. The best I can come up with is Massimo Ambrosini for some reason.

He's good looking too, he could be the poster boy for the national team in a few years.

Gayer ;)

Played central midfield when he first came through by all accounts, in his second season they moved him further forward for the goals

Reminds me of a young Roy Keane (pre-injuries) but bigger.

I'm not sure how you've gotten that impression from his 2 games so far. They haven't been Keane like at all.

He isn't really like Keane or Gerrard, surely he is most akin to Lampard only with more flair. I always think that midfielder's are the hardest to make comparisons with as their remit and styles are quite diverse, relative to the other positions on the pitch.

He s still developing - so it's too early.

Some time ago I remember someone saying that Graeme Souness was considered a "Fancy Dan" by his coach when he was very young. He eventually changed his style a bit and later became (in)famous for his tackling.

Scholes at 18 was never hitting 60 yard pinpoint passes Ffs

You can never say how he will turn out, it all depends on how much he wants to improve

Yes fair enough. But Scholes was instantly recognised at a young age as someone who would be very special. Very rare in those days for such a small player to make it through the football ranks, let alone at a top club like Manchester United. He really was something special and thats something Powell clearly isn't. Not that im saying Powell will fail to make the grade. You've got players like frank lampard who weren't highly heralded players until they hit their mid twenties.

How exactly did you come to all those conclusions? Powell "clearly" isn't special?

Scoring a wonder goal in a play off final for his local side at the age of 18 after having been their outstanding player throughout the season isn't special?

I think if you want to make comparisons you need to take into account that all the managers and people working with him have said that its his awareness and tactical ideas that stand out the most.

Is Gerrard known for that? Quite the opposite. Is Lampard? Going forward absolutely. But does he take up good defensive positions? Probably not.

I assume he's judging by quickness of his feet/ speed of thought.

Sure, Powell isn't up to scholesy's standards there.
As has been said, he's like a pacey Frank Lampard that can work in a midfield 2. At 18 he's certainly got the potential to be a United player.

We have Mats Moller Daehli who is like a young Paul Scholes anyway :)

What about coming on as a late substitute in your first ever senior appearance and subsequently scoring the winner in injury time against villa to hand your club a critical 3 points in a tightly contested title race?

Like most people, you watch his games. Granted, its a limited selection so far, with only 2 preseason matches played if you don't count his performances for Crewe.

I'm not trying to downplay his ability as I do think he is a talented 18 year old player, but labelling him "special" would be a disservice to other teenage phenoms like Rooney, Ronaldo etc.

Im curious as to what you've seen of him so far to paint him as a "special" player in the same bracket as players like Ronaldo and Rooney or even Scholes/Giggs.

That was one good moment, he's also still a very good finisher, it's other areas of his game which are lacking at the moment. Powell was Crewes main man last season despite being 17 for most of it, obviously it's a lower level but the two situations are still very different.

I'm going to stick my neck out and say he could very well be our Shaun Derry.

Special talent indeed.

Apparently scored for our reserves in a 1-1 draw.

Anyone see it?

didnt see it but apparently had quite a few long range shots which were saved by the keeper pretty well. Seems as though he has a fantastic shot on him.

The lad scored against Scunthorpe in a reserves game that ended 1-1
Anyone got a video?

Good that he is scoring. Hopefully playing him in midfield doesnt have any negative effects on his key attacking attributes as he played a lot further forward for Crewe. I'm hoping Ferguson isn't just trying to solve the midfield issue on the cheap. Anyway I'm sure he probably isn't and will revel in his new CM role. Always exciting to have very talented and young English players getting integrated into the team

Fergie was saying in an interview that he, the Crewe coaching staff and Powell all were in agreement that his future was as a centre midfielder. As I understand it the reason he played so far forward for Crewe was simply because he was a cut-above at that level and was basically guaranteed goals if he was allowed to get into those positions.

I suppose if you're a small club and you know a young player is nailed-on to be picked up by a big club in the near-future you don't worry about playing them in their natural position to aid their development. You'd be more concerned with getting as much as possible out of them before they leave.

I hope so, Fergie knows best of course but sometimes he makes a few gaffs with player positions e.g. smith in cm, Rooney and Rio in cm for a game, Rafael playing in cm. Of course it can pay off like scholes as well

If you don't experiment you will neve know. Fergie loves a player being flexible more than any other manager that I can remember watching. Don't be surprised if this lad plays both flanks, CM, Striker, in the hole and Full back for us at different times. That's how Fergie rolls.

Yeah, especially this season I think versatility has been a theme with our transfer targets, as well as with the players we've been bringing through the academy. Kagawa, Powell and Lucas Moura are all capable of playing 2+ positions and players like Lingard and Petrucci have played AM, CM and on the flanks at Reserve level.

With the squad we have now we have the potential to play a decent variety of systems and styles, which can only be a good thing given the variety of styles we have to face playing in both the EPL and UCL.

i ve just watched the goal vs scunthorpe on a video 5har1ng site, nice finish with his left foot.
