NHL 2009-10 Season

what's the mood like in Montreal, sid? *

* aside from the usual surly, cigarette fuelled sense of superiority, that is.

It's strange really. The fans are just enjoying the ride for as long as it happens. Nobody really thought they'd win more than 2 games against Washington and here we are with a decent shot of making the conference finals. I think the lack of expectations are why the celebrations are relatively peaceful! The fans are optimistic, discovering the players more and even if they lose tomorrow the team has won the hearts of the fans. I think the difference between seeing a team give everything and the Kovalev/Koivu teams has struck a chord here. And Halak!!!!!

The kid is unreal

UNREAL

Are you less bothered about losing Weber now? ;)

Even Ryan freakin O'Byrne has looked serviceable, though I am always waiting for a gaffe from him.

And the Moore-Lapierre-Pyatt line is working wonders.

You must mean Mark Streit, Weber is still a 7.0B prospect in Hamilton.

Weber is a fantastic prospect with potential to still one day break through... Hamrlik and MAB aren't going to be here forever, nor is Gill or Spacek

Georges, Markov, Mara, O'Byrne, Subban and one of Carle/Weber has our D in good shape for years, and once Markov and Mara move on, hopefully we aquire someone with quality or our second wave guys like Vernace, St-Denis or Belle can make the 3rd line jump

I'd normally not ever cheer for the Bruins but if we make it past Pittsburgh, we want you ;)

me too but go habs! if we can close the flyers it would be great to see another Bruins/habs series. they have the best rivalry, the most history, and the most respect for one another. when the B's have a historic night planned they always do it on a night they play montreal and vice versa.

It just wouldn't be the playoffs without it.

Canucks fell apart last night, time to really assess the situation there for good now

Really rooting for the Habs tonight. Would love to see a Habs-Bruins matchup. Habs took the lead, but it's early.

This is probably the best day ever! Discovering a fellow NY Rangers fan on a United forum.

Oh and let's go Habs!!

series tied 3-3...

So I better update my predicition to Flyers - Blackhawks then.

That should make Bruins fans feel better ;)

Wow. Two things.

1) That game told the story of the series perfectly didn't it? Bruins take a 3-0 lead in the series and in this game, and blow it.

2) Anyone else watch it on Versus in the States? Last minute of game 7 and it goes to commercials during play? What an absolute joke.

Edit: 2 might have just been in my general location? Not sure.

didn't go to commercials here in the dallas area...on directv.

1) I saw it coming once they scored the second one

2) Just your area, here there was no commercial

well...shit!

I never usually say this but, my condolences, i'd wanted Boston so bad if we were lucky enough to make it this far, a shame it won't happen.

It's weird, the two teams left in the East both clinched on the final day, one by basis of a loss, and one by basis of a shootout, the first in NHL history... The commercials don't lie, history will, and has, been made, and it's not even close to over yet

I pitch us as favorites based on who we beat: Philly knocked off a poor Devils team that never showed up, and then a Bruins team that, for all intensive purpose, just died whenever they were up in the series.

We beat the best teams of the past 2 seasons, in 2 different rounds, in hard fought 7 game series, and we don't look tired... Us in 6

Chicago in 7 in the other series

Damn, have been working too much to have been able to watch the playoffs more than the highlights.

Would like to see the Blackhawks win the cup for the fist time since forever with that great young team. Habs would be pretty cool too.

Montreal winning would be great for the sport, specifically Canada and a nod to the history of the league. They are the equivalent of the Yankees in their sport (not money wise but historical value).

That said, for me it devalues the sport when a club/team that barely sneaked into an inflated playoff system (half the clubs make the playoffs), hit a short run of form with some luck sprinkled in, and win a championship.

In a way it does, but it also goes to show what "resting" your stars and not playing hard to the last game does... Washington never looked like Washington, Pittsburgh fell apart when it mattered most, and we never got out of second gear in either series barr a period or 2... To me it's more testament to a gameplan that we've developed and used effectively, plus we have a goalie who is standing on his head, and one of the best minor league call-ups in the history of the game is performing like an all-star... I think it's unfair to take away both ours and Phillys credits for playing hard til the end, and the end isn't even here yet for us.

Instead of knocking playoff structure and system, I think it goes to show home-ice advantage doesn't exist... Home teams are 0-4 in game 7's, and the complexion of this post-season would be VERY different if even one of those teams won a game.

I'm not saying this as a Habs fan but more a fan of hockey and sport: Watching what Montreal and Philly have done is fascinating

Imagine if the Premiership went to a playoff system and Liverpool won the playoffs after an eighth place finish only because Everton lost their last game.

Imagine if the Premiership went to a playoff system and Liverpool won the playoffs after an eighth place finish only because Everton lost their last game.

It would be shocking, but the credit would be to Liverpool entirely because they'd have to beat the "best" teams en route to a title...

A 7 game series is more than enough to filter out the fluke, which is why the NBA ditched 5 game first rounds, and MLB is considering it for 2013... So when Montreal wins to series, in 7 games, against the best team in hockey, and the defending champions, and they got here based on a overtime loss, you need to give credit rather than knock the system.

There's no other way to do it... Momentum exists in hockey more than any other sport, so reducing the number of playoff teams to a NFL type 6 per conference for example wouldn't work... Do you play 82 games for a one-off to decide your season? In MLB, the last 2 seasons, two teams played 162 games and were tied at the end of it, so they had a one-game sudden death to get into the playoffs... You have so much time to get the job done, you know your criteria, and when the "best" teams fail in the playoffs, they prove to us that they're not the best teams, which is why nothing surprises me anymore.

College basketball isn't so forgiving which is why March Madness is as intense and as loved as it is...

NBA, NHL and MLB play too many regular season games as it is. 60-70 is plenty for NBA and NHL and would keep players fresher and make regular season games more meaningful. MLB should be 10-20 games shorter IMO. I also agree the divisional playoffs should go to seven games in MLB and was glad the NBA changed from five to seven in the first round.

Arguing in favor of Liverpool winning a playoff would render the often quoted "the table never lies" as a useless cliche.

When was the last time that seeds 7 and 8 make the conference final?

In 1994, Vancouver was a 7 seed that were a game away from winning the Cup to the Rangers

In 1999, Buffalo were also a 7 seed that went to the Cup final, losing to Dallas in 6

In 2003, Anaheim's first cup run was as a 7 seed, coming up short in the final in 7 games to New Jersey

In 2006, The first 8 seed made it to the Cup final, as Edmonton fell short of the Cup by a game to Carolina

This year will be the 5th case of a "low" seed making it to the Cup final, but as history as shown, the lower seed is 0-4... However, they hold a competative 11-16 record so nothing is impossible... This year will also be the first time that a 7/8 seed makes it this far and won't advance to the Cup final, as 7/8 seeds were previously 4-0 in conference finals.

What I meant was though if a 7th and 8th seed have played each other in a conference final before?

thanks! it's been a bad sports year for me as far as post season goes...Packers, Mavericks, and Bruins all go out stupidly. United had their fate in their owns hands and let it go. ugh!

well..."there's always next season!"

Look at it this way: You could have grown up with the Cubs. "There's always next year" is a bitter joke, there.

That save by Niemi..

I'd love to see the Hawks win the Cup for the first time in a long time. Definitely rooting for them the rest of the way.

I can't stand the Flyers (all Philly teams to be frank).

I don't like low seeds winning trophies.

Not a fan of the Sharks (a Stars rival).

I'm riding the Blackhawks wagon. I loved it when the Rangers won the cup in 94, the Wings in 97, and would like to see one of the original six win the cup (discounting Montreal).
