NFL Thread 2014-2015

Absolutely agree, the play call was bad and Wilson could have checked out but ultimately the call came from the top and that was where the big error was made, not so much with Wilson. He is taking a bit of a beating in the media this morning none the less.

Fantastic play on the ball by Butler which is being over looked too, had the pass come off people would have been praising the guts and intelligence of Wilson. Poison chalice really, it could have been a hero play or the worst play. Ended up being the worst play but it was great by Butler. Like you say, should never have been called in the first place anyway. Still don't know what they were thinking.

Can't understand it either. Im shocked really. Both of these coaches are the top of the top at the moment. I said there's no way this game will turn out like the one against GB where so many poor coaching calls ultimately shaped the game. But there you have it, a terrible call, shaping the game. Maybe a Wilson 5 years from now would have ignored the call and run the ball. Who knows.

It was a terrible call but calling it the worst QB decision of all time is hilarious. I guess that's the drama of the Super Bowl though there has to be a villain.

Overly dramatic people in the media as usual. If someone said worst decision in Super Bowl history by an OP caller / coach, I don't think it'd be far off the mark though...

So Carroll says that there were no mistakes, he didn't like the match ups on the D line for trying to run it in so they wanted to pass on that down and then try run it in if the pass was incomplete or didn't get in the end zone. The ground that Butler made up when the pass was thrown was actually really impressive. Carroll preferred the match up on the pass option instead and says that Butler made a great play on it and it is simple as that.

I'm no NFL coach but I don't see how he didn't like the match ups on the D line for trying to run it in on second down. Lynch will break tackles regardless, and even at that if the second down run doesn't get in you still have a time out left and chances on third and fourth down. He bottled it, says they didn't abandon the run game at all...tell that to Marshawn...

being labelled as the worst quarterback decision in Super Bowl history.

 no way

It was a terrible decision to make the call to pass, but it was a great defensive play by Butler. He deserves more credit for going in and making the pick happen.

My word. I am still in shock.

Thank god they threw that ball.

'Madden' sim totally nails Super Bowl prediction

http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/gaming/2015/02/01/madden-super-bowl-prediction/22723547/

Electronics Arts' track record in predicting the winner of the Super Bowl through a simulation of video game Madden NFL is pretty solid. Entering Super Bowl XLIX, the Madden sim boasts an 8-3 record.

Make that 9-3, following the New England Patriots' win over the Seattle Seahawks. However, the way this year's Madden sim predicted the outcome of Super Bowl XLIX is downright scary.

Let's start with the final score: 28-24, which the Madden sim guessed exactly. Impressive, yes. But it gets better. Some highlights:

The Madden sim predicted Tom Brady would win Super Bowl MVP (which he did), passing for 335 yards and 4 touchdowns. Brady finished the game with 328 yards and 4 touchdowns. The simulation missed by only seven yards.

As for that game-winner, the Madden sim also predicted New England would trail 24-14 in the third quarter before staging a comeback, capped by a game-winning touchdown pass to wide receiver Julian Edelman. Yep, Madden nailed that one, too.

The simulation had Edelman finish as the Patriots' top receiver, with eight catches for 106 yards. Edelman ended the Super Bowl with nine catches for 109 yards.

Translation: The Madden sim is kinda good at predicting Super Bowls.

Impressive - although I bet they wouldn't have predicted passing the ball from the 1...

Yep. They should have run it in the first place, but the reason they lost the game is more down to Butler making the play of his life than the 'Hawks making a bad offensive play. Looking at the still from Eboue, Lockette seemingly had all the space in the world to receive and run into the endzone.

That's a great photo. Looking at it there you're thinking its a TD all day. Super interception by Butler.

Just watched it all now without finding out the score/anything... unbelievable stuff, and a completely ridiculous call to make in the last 30 seconds of the sodding Superbowl.

Happiest Monday I've had in ages! :)

Same here, been walking around smiling like and idiot all day. Of course being in Ireland nobody else has a clue how big of a deal a Super Bowl win is. Downloading the game now so I can enjoy again...and again...and again...

I had this bizarre dream that Seattle were playing the Pats in the Superbowl. There was 30 seconds left in the game, they had a time out remaining and three shots at the end zone. They had a yard to the goal line. They had Mershawn Lynch, arguably the most powerful running back in the game, BEAST MODE, on the field. They chose to play a pass call.

Yeah, crazy shit, that would never happen in real life...

Have not seen it yet, but I am sure some stat guy will put it out......how many times over this season and last, goal to go situations of similar distance did Seattle pass the ball? If the percentage is more than 10% I might, I say might, cut the coaches some slack. If less than 10% they simply outsmarted themselves.

Of course I am reminded of what one old coach/manager said (think it might have been a baseball guy) as a manager when a decision works your are at best called a genius though most likely get no credit at all, when it goes wrong you take all the blame, even if your decision was the right one to make but just did not work.

Still I would have either run or if I really wanted to pass I would have gone for a fade into a corner or something along the back, high enough so it is either caught by your receiver or flies out of the endzone.

All right different situation in that it was 3rd and 3, you could still make a first down and there were still 58 seconds left, so you had at least one more try at it. 49ers were in a MUST THROW situation.

But this is how it is done, if you are throwing.

Of course lost in the hype of this play is the fact that the Cowboys got the ball back and Ronnie Lott (I think it was Ronnie) had to make a potentially game saving tackle at midfield to prevent Dallas from scoring the winner soon after this.

According to what seem to be legit media outlets, Donald Trump blames Barack Obama for the stupid play call.

That's the beauty of following the NFL and living here. When your team loses, there's no one to give you shit about it the next day.

I signed up for Game Pass on NFL network for the off season. Lots and lots of replays of that game for the next 6 months. Plus I can't wait to see this year's 'America's Game'

Yeah I signed out for gamepass for the playoffs too, the wankers still have the Super Bowl blacked out on it. Surely we should be able to watch it by now?

I get Game Pass for the regular season and then watch Sky Sports for the play offs. But seeing as it'll be pleasant viewing for the next few months I shelled out $49 for it again until August. The black out is ridiculous. 24 hours I think.

Yep, the way things work in NFL.

Yesterday, I was thinking, take the FG rather than risk going for a TD with 6 seconds left in the first half. You get the ball back anyway. They threw a TD and the defence gave so much space. (pretty much similar to the pick). Ended up being the right call, but likewise we could be here saying "why not take the easy 3 as youre gettint the ball back" if they had fecked it up.

When Lynch ran, I was thinking, "why stop him on the 1 yard line, let him score cos they will run it in next play" and by doing that you will save time for Brady to work his magic. Alas, they intercepted a pass play instead of rushing that 1 yard.

Fine margins. Despite me still thinking its crazy they didnt go for the 1 yard rush on 2nd down with BeastMode there. lol

TBH im just glad something crazier happened than the Packers collapse in the NFC championship game.

Been alive for all of them, though the first one I remember at all is Super Bowl VI. Maybe we should do a Duffy style vote ranking the games in order of which we think are best and worst. Or maybe just the 10 best since I am going to guess most of the posters, like me, have not seen them all.

Notice the early patterns. First two won by NFC (NFL at the time as it was pre-merger). Then up until 1982, you have 11 out of 13 going to the AFC. Then of the next 16 you see the NFC winning all but one (the Raiders taking XVIII). Of the games since then AFC holds a couple of wins advantage but not a total dominance.

I've seen them all since 1985. Obviously the ones I've enjoyed the most were the Patriots wins. The Cowboys' wins were some fun games too. The rout of Buffalo was fun to watch. Montana and Jerry Rice were always impressive.
