NFL Thread 2013-14

Don't think I've ever seen a game end on a safety

Good job he tucked the football, might have fumbled it otherwise. Great game awareness.

The 49ers have added Aldon Smith back to their roster - great news. I hope he has gone some way to sort his personal problems. When he is focused he is a dominant player.

Think the Niners are in a fantastic position right now. Smith is back, Manningham is back and could play in their next game. They have added Tank Carradine to their roster as well (He was picked up in the 2nd round of the draft, but he would have gone in the first round were it not for a knee injury). And this month should see Crabtree back - although I think it will take him a while to get close to his best.

Those additions to the team will be huge. Smith has been the best pass rusher of the past couple of seasons (with regard to sacks). Carradine is a genuine 1st round talent.

But I think it is our offense that will see the biggest boost from a healthy Manningham and Crabtree. We have won 5 straight and have scored at least 31 points in each of those games. That is with receiving options that kind of evaporate after Vernon Davis and Boldin. Having our receivers back will help our passing game, which will further help our running game. Kaepernick has been excellent:

Kaepernick is averaging less than 200 yards passing a game, but he is the leader of this offense and takes what the defense gives him. His Total QBR ratings are a prime example of Kaepernick’s influence of the 49ers. In Week 7, he had a Total QBR of 99.0. Sunday, he followed up with a 99.8. It was the first time a quarterback has ever registered back-to-back Total QBR’s of 99.

That QBR rating is out of 100.

One of the biggest moves the Niners made was hiring Eric Mangini:

https://bleacherreport.com/articles...s-trying-to-accomplish-by-hiring-eric-mangini (awful website design btw...)
Aligning with the 49ers' way of creatively evolving vintage offensive principals, what's more simplistic yet imaginative than hiring a defensive mind to help improve the effectiveness of an offense?

The Niners are becoming masters at taking what the defense gives them. They barely used the read option in the first 6 games of the season, yet have used it more in the last 2 games. Kaepernick has 123 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 17 carries in those games.

Our remaining schedule is, apparently, the 5th easiest in the league - I think everything will hinge on the games against the Saints (in NO) and the Seahawks (at SF). I don't want to have to go to the Seahawks in the playoffs, so we really need to win the division...which almost certainly means beating Seattle.

How good is Calvin Johnson also what is the difference between the roles of a rb and a wr.

How good is Calvin Johnson also what is the difference between the roles of a rb and a wr.

Calvin Johnson is extremely good - although I think the calls of him being the greatest ever are very premature! The league has evolved to a more pass orientated league, with more protection afforded to QBs and WRs, which definitely helps them.

No one comes close to Jerry Rice for me.

RB's predominantly run the ball, WR's mainly catch the ball.

There are different breeds of each - some WRs are pure speed guys who give you a downfield threat. Others are sure-handed route runners (as in they run their designated routes very accurately) and they are referred to a possession receivers - the kind of players the QB looks for on 3rd down when a catch is critical. Then there are the physical receivers who have a knack for catching the ball in traffic when they are very closely covered by a defender.

RBs also differ greatly. Some are small, agile and elusive who often run the ball to the outside of the offensive line. Others are stronger - preferring to run the ball through the line between the guards and tackles. Some are equally adept at receiving/catching the ball, so are also used in pass plays where they run out of the backfield and become receivers.

Pretty big generalisations, but hope it helps.

Thanks big help, so the yards a rb gets is from him running with the ball, the yars a wr gets is from how many yards the quarterback threw it plus how many he runs with it.

Who is the best player in the NFL?

Never seen Jerry Rice play but received wisdom is that he was the best of all time. Johnson is the second best WR I've seen play in terms of talent. Randy Moss when he could be bothered was the better player for me. Johnson however has been excellent consistently, Moss has a slightly higher level than him, but spent a lot of the time not really giving a feck about anything.

Who is the best player in the NFL?

Yes.

And second question will cause arguments. I think there are a few candidates right now. Peyton Manning, Johnson, (and because defense is always ignored when it comes to questions like this) Richard Sherman

Who is the best player in the NFL?

Yes - of course the yards the QB gets is also how far they through it + the yards the receiver ran with it.

Thanks I try and read up on the NFL here and there. From what I know Jimmy Graham is an immense TE, the same qb's are in the conversation ,Peyton, Rodgers, Brees and Brady. The young up and coming 4 Kapernick, Luck, Wilson and RG3. The Giants are AWFUL. Seahawks are favourites. I only watch the superbowl NFL games and American sports in general have too many stops.

Its quite hard to judge a lot of players. For example Brady is having the worst season of his career. But he is throwing to basically a bunch of people they rounded up off the street.
Similarly there is a wide receiver in Arizona called Larry Fitzgerald. In terms of talent he's probably the second best in the league, but since 2009 he's had terrible QB's throwing to him so he doesn't seem to have achieved much at all

Yep - one of the things I love about American football is that it is truly a team game. Having a great RB is all well and good, but if your offensive line cannot create holes for him to run through, he's not going to gain too many yards.

You were doing so well up until that point!

But thats only because I am a 49ers fan!

I think the commentary on NFL games is among the best of all sports. Some reasons for this:
  • are that there are breaks between plays where the commentators can give you extra insight into the previous play, so they have time to deconstruct what just happened.
  • They give you a lot of background information on players etc - they frequently add in comments such as "was speaking with such and such yesterday and they said..." They seem to have much more access than football commentators
  • They seem less judgmental - I find myself getting annoyed with commentators when watching United games, because of some of the nonsense they come out with (especially regarding their personal bias). I don't notice this when watching American football.
So you can pick up an awful lot just from the games themselves.

Oh I see. So when someone gets 50 yards he may have thrown it 23 and he the receiver ran 27.

Jerry Rice was awesome, arguably the best player of all-time irregardless of position (though I would probably give that nod to Lawrence Taylor as his presence altered offensive blocking schemes).

That said, Rice also played in a vacuum, a term applied to the type of system (like Brees in New Orleans, Marino in Miami, etc.). But he had it all - hands, speed, route running, blocking - the complete package. I highly doubt the 49ers win two more titles in the late 80s without Rice, unless they found another gem receiver post 1985.

Damn shame the 49ers jumped ahead of Dallas in the '85 draft. Gil Brandt had already planned to draft Rice with their first round pick but Walsh and company made a late move - one spot before Dallas. Dallas got Kevin Brooks, a DE bust that never achieved the projections and later clashed with Jimmy Johnson due to his lazy work ethic. They did draft Mike Sherrard in 1986 but injuries prevented him from settling into a top class receiver (seriously, the poor sod never could remain fit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Sherrard). Dallas did find that franchise receiver in 1988, a fella named Michael Irvin.

Good points!

The other thing about Rice was his legendary work ethic - his conditioning was probably better than anyone since Walter Payton.

No doubt. I recall watching a segment years ago on Rice's offseason condition and workout programs. The guy was a beast. He also aided other players in the league by inviting them to workout with him in the offseason, though most had trouble keeping up. I seem to recall he would help guys coming off injuries too.

They seem to have piles of stories about the players families and history too, always highly interesting stuff.

Narrowed my team choice down to 49ers, Seahawks or Broncos, based on mainly stupid reasons.

Just FYI.

Not sure I agree with the logic.. Also they're never on live here.

Pick the lions, it's awful really, but each win is like a mini super bowl. Supporting a good team, where winning is simply expected must be boring, I can only assume. You don't get Super Bowls, you get periodic brilliance from single players that you end up adoring as Gods. No other group of fans knows what it's like to get to cheer on Barry Sanders and watch him have to break three tackles just to get to the line of scrimmage.

But now, the Lions are not completely useless, they might even make the playoffs. Its really rewarding watching now after years of abject football, failed 1st round draft picks and bad coaches. The lions actually have a good O-line now! Once they get Burleson back and they fix that secondary, they'll be a team to be reckoned with.

Well you're basically just picking from the top 3 teams in the entire league. Where is the fun in that?

But.. My girlfriend is from Seattle, a few mates have supported the 49ers for a while and the recent Broncos v Cowboys game was amazing (I chose Broncos as they didn't have actual cowboys standing around the pitch). At least the Chiefs weren't included?

I think I'm going 49ers.

Not sure I'm at a stage where I can appreciate minor nuisances just yet I'm afraid..

I picked the 49ers too, purely because I felt that San Francisco was a city I might want to visit and then also watch a game in someday. It's unfortunate, but that's why I didn't pick any of the franchises in the smaller, less culturally rich cities.

I might have picked the Lions instead but I knew I'd never want to go to Detroit because of its association with the likes of Saddam Hussain and Eboue.

You obviously haven't seen those commercials with Buzz Lightyear because (pure) Michigan is amazing

Just do like all the white folk like Eboue do, stay in the suburbs and only travel to the downtown area if you want to go to a Tigers or Lions game. I do the same thing in Windsor, the Canadian city right across the border from D-troit.

Parking is cheap and there are some nice bars and pubs right near Ford Field that have good food, and are, brace yourself, safe. Obviously its football so tailgating is hugely popular. Plus, the golf courses around the city are dirt cheap and arguably some of the best public courses in all the US.

If you actually came to the D I'd think you'd be surrpised, surprised that you had a wonderful time and may even want to come back, or surprised when you get stabbed in the abdomen and get your wallet and phone stolen. Either way, it'll be memorable

Yeah that's definitely another factor for me too, as well as Witt is selling Detroit..

Are we selling?

Well, Minneapolis, the land of 10000 lakes is full of beautiful nature (actually it's probably closer to 15000 lakes). Minneapolis is surrounded by nice suburban neighborhoods, as well as having plenty to offer for big city dwellers. Uptown for the hip and trendy people, downtown for businesses, lots of restaurants and bars (and loud-ass clubs if that's you thing). The University of Minnesota campus is full of young college people, with everything that comes with that (bars with cheap drinks, good food specials, cheaper food). Minnesota also has lots of nice microbreweries if you're a beer guy.

As for sports, there's the Twins (baseball), Wild (hockey), Timberwolves (basketball) and of course the Vikings for football. If the Vikings are breaking your heart, you can always go catch a game at TCF bank stadium to watch the Minnesota Golden Gophers football team break your heart instead (college football). Golder Gophers also has hockey, basketball, soccer etc etc. The Vikes are getting a new, kick-ass stadium which will be done in a few years. They hope to host the superbowl soon after.

Be warned, as a Minnesota sports fan - you won't win shit :) But you'll have a lot of fun losing.

Minnesota is basically what Detroit was 20 years ago - shit football team with a shit stadium and one good running back, a shit baseball team with a great new stadium, and a good hockey team

If I was you I'd go for the Colts or Redskins or something, teams with exciting young QB's and possible bright futures, of course the 49ers have all that, and are already a top team.

Colts would be my choice if I was to start supporting an NFL team now. With Luck at QB, I'm fairly certain they'll win a couple of SBs in the next decade.

Yeah, the running back also has something called a piggyback rating, which is determined by the amount of yards he runs while carrying the quarterback on his shoulders. Points scored while in piggyback mode also count double.

Detroit is actually pretty safe. If you have a basic level of street smarts, you will be fine.

Funny you should say that as i've found myself becoming a bit of a Redskins fan. I don't get to watch tons of NFL though but i enjoyed watching RG3 and the Redskins last year and it's sorta become a thing for me. Funny how that works out :)
