NFL 2024 | Championship Day

Jags lost out on their 2nd preferred candidate - Coen. Baalking at working there seems to be becoming a trent.

…I’ll grab my coat.
Baalke has also gone and grabbed his coat, they've fired him presumably because so many HC candidates were refusing to work with him

Looking ahead to the rest of the playoffs, the Bills are my only hope of a Super Bowl that isn't played by two teams I both don't want to win. Seriously won't be able to handle another two games of Cheifs getting BS calls all the time.

It's funny how quickly people went from rooting for Mahomes/Chiefs to anybody but the Chiefs (ABCs).

I guess it happens to all winners. It all starts with respect and an appreciation of what is being achieved. But then resentment grows because they’re beating your team, or that you’re simply bored of seeing them. And then that’s when it swings, and you start focusing on all the reasons why they aren’t as good as they seem. Trying to bring them down because there’s no other way since they keep winning. Even if they’re true or not. Right now those things are the playoff penalty stats which make the Chiefs seem like they get all the decisions. Or the Mahomes “diving” to draw penalties. Other things will come up.

It’s the cycle of sporting fandom. And holds true for any perennial winners.

FACTS!!

Sooo Liam Coen signs an extension to remain OC in Tampa making him the highest-paid coordinator in the league, putting an end to all the Jaguars HC rumours.

A day later the Jags fire Baalke as GM and Coen is already in Jacksonville for talks

In other news Eagles Pro bowl centre hasn't practiced this week and Dallas Goedert has been out as well. Kelce used to play every game and now Jurgens has played pretty much every game this season so will be weird to have a different starting centre.

Andy Reid is a nice guy, one of the most beloved in NFL circles, and has suffered a lot. I wanted him to get one ring before retirement…

…not potentially half a dozen with a first-ballot HOF QB in a division that has since added a Harbaugh with a franchise QB and potentially Carroll as well.

Just to point out that since Mahomes became QB for the Chiefs, only the Jets, Browns and Cowboys have had more penalty yards called against them than Kansas City.
I’ve never thought that “more penalties/yard” is the only thing to look at, personally. Or more free throws, more yellow cards etc. if one team gives up yards100 yards but it should have been 150 yards but the refs missed X amount of calls, and the other should be 20 yards and it is 20 yards, that second team is the team that has been wronged, even if someone was to look at the stat line, as your analysis suggests to do, and think the total opposite. Which would be incorrect.

Similarly, and I’m going to switch sports to stop people from getting defensive or think I’m talking about a particular team etc. because the point I’m making is broader than that, a team that drives effectively to the basket more should expect more FTs than a 3 point chucker team. But the chucking team might get a softer whistle, so they still get fewer FTs but the margin is still not what it should be. That’s the real question.

(If one disagreed with that, you could always point out the Chiefs have fewer penalties in 10 of their 11 postseason games since 2021, in which case no doubt the arguments would conveniently flip. )

I agree with most of what you say, but I will also point out that since 2018, the Chiefs are also in the top 10 for having most actual penalties called against them.

Now whether they've also had most missed calls is definitely up for debate.

Cannot say I was ever a fan of the Chiefs. Their absolutely moronic tomahawk chop arm action/chant just really rubs me up the wrong way. Everytime I hear/see it I want to put my foot through the screen.

Pete Carroll to the Raiders!

3-year deal, that’s a long one for a guy who’s about to be 74 at the start of next season. Nice to have him back in the league though, you always had that feeling that he wasn’t entirely done with coaching after his departure in Seattle.

Goedert is great, but his resilience is not. 7th year in Philly and he's only played every game in one of those seasons, and that was his first season.

Sounds like they're practicing with Dickerson at centre this week. I guess it'll be Steen at LG if so. Steen's always been good when filling in, but Dickerson hasn't played much centre since college. Hopefully Jurgens gets some reps in today.

Raiders gonna be raiders. dont believe Carroll is a great choice for them. Feel their 1st choice was Ben and they missed out on him.

The average age of a head coach in the AFC West is 65.

Carroll is great short-term choice for them to install a winning culture, methinks.

It’s wild, and rather annoying, that the least accomplished coaches in our division are Jim Harbaugh and Sean Payton.

Means we get more Pete Carroll v Jim Harbaugh as well. Hope he does well there, just dreading the fact that Brady's presence as part-owner means we'll have to hear about that play even more.

Carroll is a horrendous choice if i were a raiders fan.

Isn't Carroll the 9/11 truther or do I have him mixed up with someone?

Which one?

Interesting, Slowik is available. He was a top head coaching candidate just a year ago. No shortage of teams needing an OC will look to possibly hire him (Bucs, Bears and Lions immediately come to mind).
