NFL 2023

That's an absolute mad take.

Rather give a chance to a 5th rounder who's on his third team in 3 years and has yet to do anything meaningful in the NFL after two seasons, than see what you have in your 2nd rounder (who is a year younger as well) who showed promising signs as a rookie, while Andy Reid is notorious for very carefully and slowly incorporating rookie WRs into his system. Not saying Moore will definitely work out or anything, but Smith-Marsette is a nobody.
Not a mad take. Seen more from ISM in 2 preseason games than I have from Watson and Skyy the whole of last season and this preseason. Watson's ceiling is a 6th string WR and I'm supposed to believe that Skyy is suddenly going to turn into a guy who can get 800+ yards in an NFL season? The 2 things of note he did last year was score a wide open walk-in touchdown and a 30 yard punt return where he ran into the huge path created by our blockers, which was his only option. Despite the enormity of the timings of those plays, they weren't impressive at all. I hope Skyy doesn't end up a nobody but from what I've already seen, he's trending that way.

You can't take anything away from preseason. And you have way too high, unrealistic expectations of a rookie WR. Not everyone is a Chase or Jefferson. Adams, Diggs, Kupp, ... as fine examples.

Maybe I'm a bit harsh but when your rookie WR plays 16 games and has 300+ snaps I do expect them to get more than 300 total yards. Toney had nearly as many yards as Skyy did from 144 snaps compared to Skyy's 313. I know you might say that Toney's in his 2nd year and look how bad it went for him in NY but his talent was still there to see in his first year and I haven't really seen anything from Skyy thus far. Again, I'll keep on saying that I really do hope I'm proved wrong and my take on him is a load of ol' shite.

Ps. Von Miller's out injured again.

Edit: not again. Just hasn't recovered quick enough.

The Patriots have waived all their QBs apart from Mac Jones

I am really looking forward to what Wink Martindale can do with Isaiah Simmons. Safe to say he's been a bust for the Cardinals and he looked horrible in preseason as a safety, but I still have the feeling there might be something there. Pretty good move from Schoen IMO getting him for a 7th rounder.

@WeePat have you been following preseason? Roby and Smith are two surprise releases for me... I know the Saints are high on Taylor at CB but still, some veteran presence is never a bad thing in the locker room.

Hope they lock down the NFC South early on - getting Bryce Young, Jordan Love, Baker Mayfield, Mac Jones, CJ Stroud and Anthony Richardson in 6 of the first 8 games is certainly a present they should capitalize on.

Thought Bosa might have signed yesterday, wonder how much longer the hold out will go on for.

Any big surprises worth discussing from the roster cut downs?

Think the niners had a couple of surprising choices but mainly in the backups/rookies. Bit of draft privilege going on.

Read something on Twitter that the Buccaneers have kept six or seven UDFA's for this season alone on their 53-man roster, which is certainly a lot.

I actually think Sean Tucker might push Rachaad White for meaningful touches if he can stay healthy.

We have 13 rookies in the final 53, never seen such a number before. Our practice squad should be stout as some of the displaced vets were signed to it.

Don't think anyone will unseat White for a ton of touches early days. We are putting a ton of anticipatory expectations on him. Tucker has the back up position nailed down though.

We shall see quute soon if this year's running game is more like last year's historically inept output on the ground or more like typical NFL standards. Canales can't do worse than Leftwich.

The state of the NFC is really poor compared to the AFC - it was like that in previous seasons as well but now it's really showing.

NFC North has a questionable Bears team and the Rodgers-less Packers for the first time in over a decade. Vikings were good last year but will lose some of the one-score games that all went their way last season.
NFC East, Commanders have questions at QB.
NFC South, all of Atlanta, Tampa and Carolina have serious question marks and/or rookies at QB. The Saints aren't all that but the division is there for the taking with Carr at the helm.
NFC West, the Cards are in full tank mode, the Rams aren't what they used to be two years ago and Seattle doesn't really convince me (but will surely be around .500 ish). Even the Niners are starting with a questionable QB who still has everything to prove.

Compare that to the AFC where, even with 7 playoff teams, you have the likes of Watson, Tua and Russ missing out on the playoffs - only the South is a bit poor with the Titans not as strong as they used to be and the Colts and Texans going long-term with rookies at QB. AFC East and North are absolutely loaded though while the West has Mahomes and Herbert.

AFC East will be the group of death, pending Russ finding a proper stove and/or Deshaun finding a happy place at a massage parlour chain.

Half of these players were on the 2020 SB team. Mostly on the older side for all of them, but most could defo help a team re: depth...

As a 9ers fan in Maryland, please don’t play with my emotions like this. I’m still scarred from a decade ago

The thing about Hockenson is that he immediately played at a high level and put himself among the key players for the offense alongside JJ, Darrisaw, O'Neill and Cousins. Darrisaw and JJ are also going to be highly paid. The other thing is that it is expected that the Vikings will go with a 12 personal, with Oliver and Hockenson which on paper should be very difficult to match. Hopefully it works because the idea is pretty good.

PS: That idea probably comes from the Chiefs who went TE heavy last season.

Is he even in the top five tight ends today?

I have him at fourth behind Kelcee, Kittle and Andrews. For the Vikings he was rock solid as a chain mover and as a target in the middle away from Jefferson, in spite of a difficult firts half of the season with the Lions, he ended the season second in total yards due to racking up 86 targets in 10 games for the Vikings. His goal should be to reach 1000 yards next season.

Not going to be predicting the playoffs.

I've gone crazy on vinted this last month - picking up official NFL jerseys of Davante Adams, Peyton Manning (Broncos), Arian Foster. All for less than £12 each. Outstanding value, all of them completely authentic too and perfect condition. Would recommend for UK based fans.

Great shout.

Can we just start the fecking season now? Sick of regular football already.

Gents, we will be enjoying the last hour of RedZone in exactly seven days.

Genuinely cannot wait, bought food this morning to make RedZone snacks. Just hoping the Niners get Bosa signed or it's going to be a rough week, may be worth a bet on the Steelers if you are that way inclined.

Does anyone know whether Game in 40 is already back on DAZN or not?

Would be absolutely glorious to have Lions @ Chiefs on Friday morning during breakfast.

r/NFLUK have been doing a whole lot of complaining to DAZN (they even put together a petition to the NFL to take the broadcast rights away from DAZN ) and from the responses they've got from all the pestering suggests that Game in 40 will be back for the start of the season. I believe some pre-season games had it, but Id heard they were a bit broken and didn't actually feature every play like they used to. Allegedly they won't be blocking the ad breaks during live games with a DAZN screensaver either. I remember the ESPN Player screensaver and the badly looped droning sound being particularly maddening, so I'm glad they've u-turned on that.

Still no word on downloading games, or stream quality though (many said the pre-season games were 720p with a jittery frame rate) but they're listening at least. I suspect (hope) it will get better as the season goes on.
