5.) Benching. Butler. Today.
Not an overreaction but simply put it cost us the Super Bowl. Yes BB is the greatest coach ever and I trust in him 100% (In Bill We Trust) but he got this one completely wrong and what a bonehead decision it was. To make matters worse, it’s an ego thing too wanting to do things his way...if you watched The Two Bills documentary, you’ll get what I mean by an ego thing / that certain arrogance he has with decisions like this wanting to express his power and let everyone know he’s boss and in charge. He’ll even go to the enth to make a point and he fecking did it today and completely backfired. Honestly speaking it could only backfire as there was literally no positive that could come from the benching.
For starters, Butler has been our best defensive player for the past 3 seasons. Sure this season his play dropped but that may have been psychological with Gilmore getting paid and the Pats not committing to him. A common misconception people have is after the SB INT he road the glory but football fans will know the following year he was a top10 CB and balled out to prove he wasn’t a 1 hit wonder nor would he let 1 play define him.
This is especially bizarre considering Butler played 97% of all snaps this season. 0% in the Super Bowl. K.
Something just doesn’t add up and to be quite honest it’s just Belichick and he shot himself in the foot today. Butler is a dog and he fights on every single play. Even if he gives up a catch, he’s our best tackling CB. If you watch him, you know one of his best attributes is breaking up the play in midair even when a WR catches the ball aka he forces incompletions of should have been completions. Seeing Rowe get toast in the 1st half by Jeffrey, I could only imagine the impact Butler would have had as there’s absolutely no way he could have been any worse than what we had out there today. At times safety’s would be in coverage to matchup against their WRs. Just doesn’t make sense and really the only thing I’m frustrated at - it’s weird, sad, confusing, heartbreaking, and fascinating, mixed emotions really. Foles was what, 10/14 on 3rd down and had half his total yards on those conversions?
The fact Rowe said after the game that wasn’t the plan is absurd. Even if Butler did something wrong (which I’m 99% sure he didn’t), you don’t bench your best defender the entire game and in the fricken Super Bowl. 1 play, 1 drive? Sure, take it. The entire game? Feck off, now you’re taking the piss. Whatever it is, you put that shit aside and don’t pull an idiotic move like this and address it after the game.
Even Browner sounded off on it
And I wonder what some of the guys on the team feel? If you’re Tom Brady, what are your thoughts on very much having missed out on your 6th ring at age 40 while you’ve poured your heart and soul into this game because coach decided to bench Malcom Butler for no apparent reason leading to the worst defensive showing by a Pats BB team ever on the biggest stage all as you put up the best QB numbers ever seen? I’ll tell you what, if I was him I’d be pissed off and have questions I’d demand answers to.
Worst part is, BB doesn’t have to address it if he chooses cuz he can just say well I’m Bill and the greatest and what I say goes so blah blah blah but that’s a fecking cop out and inexcusable for the decision he made today. I love Bill to death but this sort of wreaks and has a sour feel to it. I really really really hope it wasn’t a move to flip off ownership or anything like Parcells did in the past considering the rumours of turmoil between him and Kraft revolving around the JimmyG decision. And at the end of the day, you want to win or lose with your best players on the biggest stage. Just can’t wrap my head around this decision. Makes zero sense.
