His last throw reached the end zone. The pass before that was incomplete so he would have been in the same position to begin with.
Yeah, but not exactly with ease. I do think they were hesitant because they weren't sure he had the distance in him.

Yes but I'd rather take that risk than to throw just 10 yards and the receiver catches it but doesnt get out of bounds. That would have been worse than throwing a hail mary which doesnt quite reach the end zone because there is always a chance of some miracle where someone tips it and finds it way to a Pats receiver.

You know what, I stand by BB’s decision to bench Butler. You have to stick with your laurels - it’s worked for you for the last 15 years. If there was a fair reason to bench Butler (a reason that has benched players before him), then so be it. It is what it is.

Still, 5 times, 5 times, WCW Champion. Now can you dig that?

5 out of 8 ain't a bad record, especially when you consider Elway was 2 for 5 and Kelly was 0 for 4.

I don’t believe the reports. Butler wouldn’t have responded the way he did if he did something like that. Likewise, BB wouldn’t have dressed him for the game if he knew this during the week. And if it was the case, BB wouldn’t have called it a strictly football decision after the game when he was asked.

...few current Pats players liked Browner’s post as well where he called out the benching.

There’s certainly tension in the air which will one way or another have to be addressed throughout the organization.

Think Patricia could be a disaster at the lions. That Pats defence that we played yesterday is the worst defence the Eagles played this season

Yes, I don't see anything what Patricia brings to the table in terms of head coaching (other than obviously having been apart of the Pats during their recent run). His total defense yardage was 29th in the league this year.

That is because the Pats defence is actually utter shit. The guy has been incredible at adjusting and making do with the players he was given throughout the regular season.

Patricia has actually done well with the defence. They improved markedly after the first few weeks.

Disagree with both of these comments (broadly)

Our defense by personal is absolutely shocking - players who were literally nobodies picked up to play, especially on the D line and linebacker levels. In secondary, yeah we have a decent line up that, however, had to make up for QBs who had all day to throw due to no pressure.

The reality is we had no right being in the SB with the players we had on D. Part of that is Brady and the offence overcoming it, part of it is Patricia's coaching to turn this D into something respectable. Our defense was pathetic in the first Q of the season; the way we turned it around is testament to the coaching by Patricia. Not to mention, yardage on D isn't that key... it's scoring D that is key, something Patricia has always been top 10 in since being a DC.

What does he offer as a HC? Good question - hard to know. Will need to wait and see what he can do from a HC perspective. As a DC though he was excellent.

Another example of stats not meaning very much. The Patriots give up lots of yardage but keep redzone scoring to a minimum. The total yardage means jack shit in this regard.

The NFL off season is so incredibly long. It may be because they want to give the players time off since it's a very physical sport, but rugby is even more physical and rugby union seasons are much longer than NFL ones. Rugby players may a lot more games per year as well. Rugby games are also 20 minutes longer than gridiron games and without all the breaks in between.

As a gridiron fan, I find the gap between seasons rather hard to take. Thank God for tennis, cricket, footy and rugby. Waiting for the World Cup in Russia!

A coach can only do so much when the talent level is lacking but this NE defense performed quite well over the last ten regular season games until going belly up in the big game.

That said, if his defenses haven't really been top tier what has led him to being such a HC commodity? Usually those desired HC commodities have transformed their offenses/defenses, putting their stamp on the work. I don't see it with Patrica.

I didn't see it with Vance Joseph.

Still don't.

Having played both sports for a number of seasons, I always found it took longer to recover from an American Football game than a rugby match. I played back row in rugby (usually flanker) and linebacker in football. The collisions are more violent in football than rugby. I think this is down partly to the fact that you are wearing all the pads - so you play with more abandon - to try and tackle someone by simply running through them and knocking them over in rugby just doesn't work - and would likely cause self-injury if you tried it.

Also, football is more stop start than rugby, but to play it feels like a series of sprints - so each play is played at full speed and intensity. You can't play that way for a full 80 mins of rugby (at least I couldn't!).

Cheers for the insight mate. I've never played american football, I've only ever played rugby and I wasn't very good at it. While playing rugby, I found out that I needed to work out, bulk up and get some serious upper body strength and overall stamina to become better at the game. Ruggers requires serious stamina and strength, something that I lack.

I've been getting into american football the last couple of years having followed the game on and off over the years. I'm looking to start off with touch football perhaps? But yeah, both sports are serious business.

I'm with you. I can't believe Americans just accept like 7 months of offseason like it's fine. It's not fine guys.

Like them Rugby fans who only show up for 6 weeks a year......

(<-------guilty of that)

Hope Patricia will do well at Detroit. Between them, the Red Wings and the Pistons id say they are the team most overdue for any kind of success there. With all the recovery of the city - some new sporting success would be a massive amount of icing on the cake. Funny enough a journo in the Detroit press was making the case for Brady to go the Lions as well and for Stafford to go the other way. Seems far fetched but crazier things have happened. Especially with Brady 's Michigan connection and his age it doesn't even seem that far of a stretch.

5.) Benching. Butler. Today.

Not an overreaction but simply put it cost us the Super Bowl. Yes BB is the greatest coach ever and I trust in him 100% (In Bill We Trust) but he got this one completely wrong and what a bonehead decision it was. To make matters worse, it’s an ego thing too wanting to do things his way...if you watched The Two Bills documentary, you’ll get what I mean by an ego thing / that certain arrogance he has with decisions like this wanting to express his power and let everyone know he’s boss and in charge. He’ll even go to the enth to make a point and he fecking did it today and completely backfired. Honestly speaking it could only backfire as there was literally no positive that could come from the benching.

For starters, Butler has been our best defensive player for the past 3 seasons. Sure this season his play dropped but that may have been psychological with Gilmore getting paid and the Pats not committing to him. A common misconception people have is after the SB INT he road the glory but football fans will know the following year he was a top10 CB and balled out to prove he wasn’t a 1 hit wonder nor would he let 1 play define him.

This is especially bizarre considering Butler played 97% of all snaps this season. 0% in the Super Bowl. K.

Something just doesn’t add up and to be quite honest it’s just Belichick and he shot himself in the foot today. Butler is a dog and he fights on every single play. Even if he gives up a catch, he’s our best tackling CB. If you watch him, you know one of his best attributes is breaking up the play in midair even when a WR catches the ball aka he forces incompletions of should have been completions. Seeing Rowe get toast in the 1st half by Jeffrey, I could only imagine the impact Butler would have had as there’s absolutely no way he could have been any worse than what we had out there today. At times safety’s would be in coverage to matchup against their WRs. Just doesn’t make sense and really the only thing I’m frustrated at - it’s weird, sad, confusing, heartbreaking, and fascinating, mixed emotions really. Foles was what, 10/14 on 3rd down and had half his total yards on those conversions?

The fact Rowe said after the game that wasn’t the plan is absurd. Even if Butler did something wrong (which I’m 99% sure he didn’t), you don’t bench your best defender the entire game and in the fricken Super Bowl. 1 play, 1 drive? Sure, take it. The entire game? Feck off, now you’re taking the piss. Whatever it is, you put that shit aside and don’t pull an idiotic move like this and address it after the game.

Even Browner sounded off on it

And I wonder what some of the guys on the team feel? If you’re Tom Brady, what are your thoughts on very much having missed out on your 6th ring at age 40 while you’ve poured your heart and soul into this game because coach decided to bench Malcom Butler for no apparent reason leading to the worst defensive showing by a Pats BB team ever on the biggest stage all as you put up the best QB numbers ever seen? I’ll tell you what, if I was him I’d be pissed off and have questions I’d demand answers to.

Worst part is, BB doesn’t have to address it if he chooses cuz he can just say well I’m Bill and the greatest and what I say goes so blah blah blah but that’s a fecking cop out and inexcusable for the decision he made today. I love Bill to death but this sort of wreaks and has a sour feel to it. I really really really hope it wasn’t a move to flip off ownership or anything like Parcells did in the past considering the rumours of turmoil between him and Kraft revolving around the JimmyG decision. And at the end of the day, you want to win or lose with your best players on the biggest stage. Just can’t wrap my head around this decision. Makes zero sense.

I don’t believe the reports. Butler wouldn’t have responded the way he did if he did something like that. Likewise, BB wouldn’t have dressed him for the game if he knew this during the week. And if it was the case, BB wouldn’t have called it a strictly football decision after the game when he was asked.

Told you the reports were bs

Malcolm just made a post on instagram clarifying that he did nothing wrong and ultimately it was a coaches decision (Belichick) ...TB12 liked the post and replied to it with 5 exclamation marks :nervous:

So it was actually Nick Foles who asked for that play at the end of the half and Pederson said yes. Not sure Foles could have done anything more in the superbowl

Read an article today that suggested he missed his curfew and then was caught with weed and as a result had a row with the coaches.

Like I said, false “reports”

Check out his instagram post in which he clarifies

This is similar to Fergie benching Rooney for the Madrid home in UCL a few years ago. But even that could be argued that it was the team's sake and having Welbeck in to cover Alonso but not with Malcolm. He is a top CB for them and still cant understand how Rowe would have given them a better opportunity at victory.

Yep

Safe to say this won’t be forgotten for a considerable amount of time but oh well it’s in the past now
