Last night highlighted the difference between a great team and a good team. The Patriots were 28-3 down under massive pressure and they overcame it and strived. The Falcons? 28-3 up, gave up one TD and with the absolutely slightest bit of pressure they completely crumbled. Sensible play calling went out of the window and the offense (bar one or two big plays from Julio) went into hiding. The Patriots are a great team, you give them a sniff and they'll usually take it. This will be a big loss for the Falcons, may struggle to recover next season.

You've got the give credit to the Patriots (as much as it fecking hurts me to do so) because they still had a heck of a lot to do. That said, nobody is convincing me that they haven't been handed two Superbowl's in the last three years. Seahawks with the worst play call I've ever seen in SB history and last night wasn't too far off either.

I still don't get why they haven't changed the OT rule either. Deciding a championship game pretty much on a coin toss is ridiculous.

Watched until half time. Atlanta looking excellent, Brady looking lost. 21 - 3 against really good front runners, I thought there was no way back. Went to bed rather than watch the Gaga crap. Wake up this morning to one of the best comebacks of all time (irrespective of the OT arguments). Bah.

My personal highlight was Willie McGinest swearing like a trooper as he delivered the trophy to the podium.

"Kiss that mothafu*ka"

Is today a national holiday in the US after the super bowl? I imagine alot of people are hungover.

For a global audience it should be on a Saturday, i am feeling like the walking dead at the mo

Yeah I'd love it to be Saturday. I had to bail at halftime because I had a long drive to a job this morning and didn't want to risk the lack of sleep.

If they did it on Saturday it might reduce the numbers watching no? Because some people work on Saturdays and more people are likely to go out on Saturday nights to party than on Sunday.

Whilst the overtime rules are unbalanced now, surely giving both teams 1 possession just means the 2nd team to get the ball essentially gets 4 downs to play with if they need a TD rather than 3.
I would add another quarter on (maybe in playoffs not regular season due to fatigue factors)

 Wow, some people get really touch it seems. And before people get defensive again, this is what I said before the coin toss even happened:

1st possession td for OT should not equal a win imo

I had no real stake in who won. I was happy we got an epic match. Im still laughing at the "its the rules, so dont complain, just accept it, dont question it" type of thinking last night.

Seems Mark Walhberg says he left cos his son was sick. Hmmm. But then theres also video of him leaving and they all seemed fine. Dunno. Oh well, gotta suck missing that live.

Just a few things - and I'm the biggest Pats hater on here (hater of all things Boston/NE tbf)

- Atlanta didn't play the percentages and paid the price...you're in field goal territory, 3 points seals the deal, run the f-ing ball! Even if he only gains a couple of yards - you run the clock...instead, they go for a deep drop and give up a 12 yard sack. Stupid...Stupid...Stupid...it made no sense under any circumstances (not even with the BS - 'we like being aggressive'

- Pats got lucky no doubt...but, all great teams get some luck from time to time - the crucial holding call and of course the catch by Julian Edelman. Pats would probably point to Giants getting flukey and costing them a SB.

- Down big, working against the clock and the run game no longer a factor AND despite giving up a number of sacks - Pats O line was pretty good. 62 passing plays is no joke

- Atlanta D - they were simply gassed at the end - they were asked to do far too much..for far too long and particularly so in the 4th quarter.

- Pete Carroll handed a SB win to the Pats, but this one - I'd say the Pats won. Regardless of how scared the Falcons looked with the pressure on...28-3 with a quarter and a bit in the SB is when most teams would quit. That team didn't quit. Simply mind blowing.

OT - 1st overtime ever in SB history and going down the field to score a TD isn't as easy as Brady and the Pats made it look. I don't want them tinkering with the OT rules any further.

It's not about whether the OT rule is unfair or not. I think it's safe to say that most people, myself included, agree that it should be changed. The reality is though that all of those complaining about it now are only doing so because it's the Patriots who benefited from it. I bet there'd be nothing on it if the Falcons won. That's why the thread has turned into a mess.

Also, it's funny how the Patriots "only" won because of this OT. No acknowledgment of how we even got to that point.

In summary, this comment about the OT rules is just a mask for what are really bitter fans angry that the Patriots won. Otherwise, we might actually see some objectivity and balance in their posts.
Love how the 25% of OT games where both teams don't get the ball out weighs the 75% of the games where they do.

Or the ones who watched this game only for huge spectacle but then spent hours crying about the rules.

Yeah sure it has nothing to do with who won.

Can't believe that the football season is over already. Amazing sport and an incredible league to follow

I actually like the OT rule tbh, defence is also a part of football and so I am not sure why one team getting the ball at the 20-25 yard line is that big an advantage. If the Falcons had defended better and got a stop there then they would have won the game with just a field goal.

Seeing Arthur Blank's wife dance made me root for the Patriots and like the previous post says, defense is a big part of the game, if you can't stop the opposition you don't deserve the ball.

Time of Possession:

Pats: 40mins
LOLcans - 23mins

Total Plays:

Pats: 93
LOLcans: 46

Double the time and plays - that poor D had no chance in the end, particularly in OT, when they were not only fighting against fatigue but momentum.

At the end of the day Patriots got 4 stops in a row to win this game while Falcons couldn't get any.

On a seperste note NBC coverage would have been so much better yesterday than Buck. I don't think Buck is terrible but the NBC crew are my favourites.

Reading some of the comments on ESPN's website.

Tons of "wah wah wah" about how the whole NFL is fixed. Best response to the fix claims came from a guy who said Edelman spent 5 days at Area 51 practicing making that catch.

I stand by Brady > Jordan btw
Not a chance.

I think most acknowledge that MJ is the best basketball player ever. Brady has certainly increased his claim to being the best QB ever, but I wouldn't consider him the greatest American Footballer ever.

Also, MJ had a far greater impact on his sport than Brady has, and achieved much more worldwide awareness, recognition and fame. He has also been more successful on both an individual and team perspective.

Not even a contest IMO.

I take it you've never disliked a rival team's star player before?

Oh no I certainly have. And I pretty much act in the same way as you  but do also acknowledge it is a bit immature lol.

In fairness though when someone does something special, even if I hate them I can broadly at least respect what they've done. Best example I can think of is Gerrard and Liverpool 2005, although I feel disgusting saying it.

I hate the Pats but complaining about OT rules ? C'mon now. Notice how it wasn't an issue ALL season.

Falcon's lost their only other OT game this season v. the Chargers. Anyone know who won the OT coin toss in that game? Think it was Atlanta, they got stuffed going for it on 4th down and then the Chargers drove for the game winning FG.

Rivalries are great for sports but in the end you should respect /admire greatness of players/teams above and beyond rivalries. Love Nadal for example but find it hard to not admire the greatness of Roger Federer. I think anyone who loves NFL would have really enjoyed that game today

Look, I'm not saying that the overtime rule is perfect. In fact, I'd probably agree it needs changing. But:

1) The same people making a meal of it now, would not be doing so if the Falcons had won it in the same way. That is a fact. And that is why it riles some of us.
2) The bold argument is a bit stupid, as scoring a penalty is quite clearly significantly easier than driving 75 yards for a touchdown.

The reality is, it is point 1 that has caused the issue. It's using anything to try and put something in the tickbox against why this superbowl win means nothing and why Brady and the Patriots aren't as good as everyone seems to think.

If you can't aknowledge that reality and that motive, then so be it and enjoy the rest of your day.

Point number 1 hasn't caused the issue. At least 3/4 others along with myself were questioning the rule despite having no allegiance to either side. I spent a summer in San Francisco and own a 49ers hat. So they'd be my team. But I've probably never watched a full game that they've played in. That tells you how little I care about last nights game or Tom Brady or the Atlanta Falcons. There may have been some who were giving out about the OT rule because it was the Patriots that benefitted. But not everyone.

Point 2 isn't stupid. It's the same thing. Although I do agree that the penalty is a much easier task. So how about this, one team gets to take all 5 of their penalties. If they score 1-4, the other team gets to try score their 5. If the first team scores all 5, it's game over. Its not that dissimilar to the NFL OT rule.

I don't even know why I'm in the thread.:lol: It's a sport I don't particularly like. I just find the OT rule a bit mad. I'm not saying the Falcons were robbed of the Patriots cheated, like we've been accused of saying (@JustAFan ). I'm simply saying, the OT rules mean that one team has an advantage based on the flip of a coin. That's all and I think you agree with me on that.

In all fairness, maturity goes out the window when getting emotionally involved in wealthy athletes messing about with a ball on a field. And I respect Brady's accomplishments. You just won't see me go out of my to lay praise. :p

You're on a wum. You have to be.

No one is saying the 25% outweighs the 75%. But surely it would be better if in 100% of the games that go to OT, both teams got their shot at winning.

LOL a guy who made a post where he claimed that he was not saying the coin toss decided the game, then ending it by saying it did. Just said I had said others were saying the Patriots cheated because of the rule (yeah you made that up). Did in fact say the 25% outweighs the 75%. Admits to not liking the sport at all. Watched one game all season. Then says others must be on a wum. Thank God we can put ignorant shits on ignore.

Yeah. Except I couldn't give a bollox about the Patriots or the Falcons. I only watched it last night for the spectacle. It was my first game to watch all year.

So, let's clear this up. The team that wins the toss wins just over 50% of the time, right?

And JastAFan tells me that 75% of the time both teams get a possession. So that's 1/4 of OT games, where a team doesn't get a chance to win the match in OT.

But the coin toss isn't an advantage? Haha. Ok lads.

.

LOL. There you have it, saying the 25% proves an advantage despite 75% of the time far outweighing that. Sound logic.
