So, seeing the madness that is soccer transfers, muppetry and sums I have some questions for NFL fans.

- Do you have transfer muppetry like in soccer?
- How are transfer sums in American football?
- Do you have sugardaddy clubs like we do in soccer?

These questions are also viable for other American sports like Baseball and Basketball since I really dont know anything about either of them :)

Also are wages out of control in NFL \ baseball and NBA like in soccer? I know the huge stars make a lot, and I've heard about some insane wages in baseball I think, but my guess is that they don't pay mediocrity as well as they get paid in soccer, but rather the hugest stars?

There is no muppetry per se because there is no transfers per se, there is no transfer sums because there is no transfers per se and the notion of Sugardaddy is barely applicable in US sports.

There are no muppetry or transfers? How do sports fans get their jizz on in off-season then? Life is not worth living without muppet-season.

There is the draft in April-May but even then a lot of NFL fans don't watch College football, so during the off season people watch the MLB, the NBA and/or the NHL.

IE everyone dies of boredom (per se)

You trade players for other players (sometimes cash is included as part of the trade) and you sign players out of free agency.

Players aren't valued like in soccer with transfer fee values, the values you hear about in sports here are the values of their contracts.

I personally would rather watch college football any day instead of the NFL.

It's different, I like the complexity of the NFL there are less touchdowns, less big plays but that's because the defenses are infinitely better and less error prone. College football is exciting because something special can happen at every plays and the atmosphere is incredible.

No, transfer rumors in American sports are so much better because people can't just make up total bullshit and it doesn't take 3 months for something to get done. The media is generally very reliable and well connected and it helps that all player contract values are public.

Players aren't bought and sold, rather traded. Lots of times they leave in free agency. In soccer it is seen as a major loss to lose a player on a free. In american sports it is very normal and teams will often keep players until the end of the contract knowing full well they will leave at the end. Players don't pout and try to force their way out of contracts when they don't want to be there. They know that they signed the contract and they put in the time.*

We have richer and poorer clubs but it is different in each sport. In baseball there is no salary cap, just a luxury tax for the higher spending teams. (I've advocated this for soccer). In basketball there is a soft cap which means teams can spend a maximum amount on the team but can go over that amount with certain exceptions they just have to pay a proportional luxury tax to do so. Basketball also has a maximum player salary, which is dependent on years in the league. The NHL and NFL have hard caps but no maximum salary for an individual player which means a team has a maximum salary allotted to their squad and cannot go over in any circumstance.

I suspect your definition of out of control wages is different than mine, where I see players as labour generating the massive revenues and ownership as rich people who couldn't lose money if they tried on an investment in the NBA, MLB or NFL.

  • The average NFL salary is $2 million per year and the top players make $15-25 million but NFL contracts are only partially guaranteed.
  • The average NHL salary is also $2 million but the top players make around $8-10 million, most are guaranteed though.
  • The average NBA salary has skyrocketed this summer. The average is $4 million but top players make $30 million or more. The average will increase substantially in the coming years. Almost all contracts are guaranteed.
  • The average MLB salary is $5 million with the top players making over $30 million per year. Every MLB contract is guaranteed. One day on an MLB roster entitles the player to health insurance for life. 40 days gives him a pension. They even get $100 per day meal money when on the road.

This is slightly different in the NFL where contracts are not fully guaranteed. Players will hold out for more money because in the NFL you are always one hit away from a career ending injury but there is never a worry that an unhappy player will cause bad chemistry or something. Even when guys are unhappy they are playing their best with an eye on their next contract.

@Eboue @SwansonsTache

To add onto what Eboue said... The leagues in the US are unionized and very actively collectively bargain... These leagues have league minimum salaries that you can play people on the roster. I believe the numbers below are accurate for 2016...

NFL league minimum: $450,000

MLB league minimum: $505,000

NBA league minimum: $540,000

NHL league minimum: $550,000

To add to that... A guy I played football with in high school is currently on the practice roster for an NFL team. He gets paid $80,000 per year just to practice with the real squad.

Some ESPN radio guy has labeled Aikman & Buck as Frasier & Niles. Shit is hilarious.

Found this as well - http://www.theonion.com/article/joe-buck-walks-in-on-troy-aikman-covering-nfl-game-26486

MINNEAPOLIS—Fox play-by-play announcer Joe Buck claimed to be overwhelmed with feelings of inadequacy, betrayal, and grief Sunday after catching color commentator Troy Aikman covering the Packers-Vikings game with another man. "Troy? Troy! I can't believe you would do this to me after insisting I was the only broadcasting partner you ever wanted or needed," said Buck, who walked in on Aikman and play-by-play announcer Thom Brennaman intimately discussing Vikings rookie quarterback Christian Ponder's first NFL start. "The second I'm away you're hopping into the booth with…with some guy? Some guy who could never describe a 6-yard carry by running back James Starks the way I can? Does he know that you prefer it when I say the 'ball carrier burst through a huge hole'? I trusted you, Troy, but here you are sharing footage of your rookie season with some man you don't even know." Sources confirmed Aikman repeatedly apologized to Buck, saying, "It's not what it looks like," while putting on his pants.

What a vile women. What is she playing at.

Looks like the deal with get done today, predictably.

Shame it had to get so sour so publicly.

Brady drops his legal proceedings.

Still think the ban should be reduced to max 2 games. Goodell is a cnut.

I actively root against the patriots, out of jealousy more than anything else, but this deflate-gate fiasco is a joke. Goodell is a scumbag.

I've also just looked at that NFL top 100 players thing and saw GOAT Aaron Rodgers at number six, another joke.

Assuming he is banned for 4 games, he misses @Cardinals, Dolphins, Texans, Bills. I think we'll be ok with 3 of them being in NE, at worst we should be 2-2.

@Cardinals would be a very tough opener even with Brady. I hope we can profit from his ban after Osweiler had a few games to settle in but even then I think the Pats will be 2-2 at worst.

I'm actually looking forward to the Pats-Broncos game even without Manning-Brady. Really interested to see how Belichick counters Wade Phillips' defense which tortured us in the AFC game.

Yea man, should be fun, I'm absolutely psyched for the new season!

So cool to see the athletes work out together in the offseason. AB and Wilson are training together with Jimmy Butler and Norman and Von Miller seem to be good friends as well. Also genuinely happy for each other if they sign new contracts. I've become a big Antonio Brown fan the last couple of months, it's amazing to see in which way he leads his life and tries to improve all day every day, massive respect for that.

Can't wait for the season to begin now.

Has anyone been watching the Cards series on Amazon Prime? Am I late to the party?

Did I skip ahead to the beating we gave them in week 17?

Yes
