Aqib Talib from shutdown corner to shot down corner.

Buffalo Bills running back Karlos Williams reported to minicamp overweight this week, prompting the team to hold him out of practices.

This type of situation is not particularly uncommon this time of year. Some players report in better condition than others. But Williams' explanation for why he had gained weight was as original as it gets.

When asked what injury has held him back this spring, Williams replied, "The injury of pregnancy I'd say."

"Nothing really, just pretty much just trying to make sure pregnancy went well for my fiancée but since that's over with, she knows what time it is; it's football time again," Williams explained, according to ESPN.com. "So getting back in football shape and getting ready for training camp."

A reporter commented this might be the first time pregnancy was cited as an issue for a football player.

"It definitely is a first, but I like to eat and then her being pregnant gave me an excuse to eat, so eating anything and everything," he said. "She'd wake up, one or two o'clock, 'I want a snack.' Well, I'm not going to sit here and watch you eat because I don't want you to feel bad, but it's back to football.

"She's getting back to working out herself so (we're) kind of motivating each other, feed off each other's energy, and we're getting ready for camp."

Bills coach Rex Ryan told reporters Tuesday that Williams is "obviously not anywhere close to where he needs to be to play at a high level."

I know Williams has a responsibility to come to camp in shape like the rest of his teammates, but as far as excuses go, this one is pretty solid. As someone who knows what it's like living with a pregnant woman, I can attest that the struggle is real.

You try going through an In-N-Out drive-thru without ordering a Double Double for yourself. It's a test of willpower engineered by Beelzebub himself.
 amen to the In-N-Out comment

Agh how is it not even close?

Increase wage cap
Increase squads
Increase games
???
Profit

I'd genuinely be ok with more bye weeks so it's just extended longer.

I said something like that a while back, it'd be great if it were possible.

I always thought they should split the season's schedule so that each team only plays once every second week. Half one week, half the next. Be complicated to figure out a workable schedule, but you'd have players more healed and rested between games, a season twice as long despite no extra games being played, and twice as many televised games to cash in on

Never in favor of a sport standing still and not being willing to change as it needs to, but for me the NFL season is getting too long as it is. 16 games is plenty. The regular season go for about 4 months to double that to 8 just to play 16 games or longer if you add more games, nah does not really do anything for me. Season is starting to stretch too long as it is, fecking Super Bowl in February.

The down side to having every other week off is, it would suck to constantly have two weeks in between seeing your team play during the season. If you end up with 2 road games in a row you could go a month between home games, who the feck wants that. Yeah I know they could schedule it so every other game you are home, but that just adds more complications to the schedule making and you still end up having too many weekends where your team is not playing.

Losing the offseason downtime might offset any benefits to wear and tear on the players that you get from having every other week off. Plus you are probably increasing the overall amount of combined practice and game time during which injuries can happen.

Teams would play a game, then be off for two weeks, could actually negatively affect the quality of play and avoid teams being able to build momentum.

The NFL would risk losing some of the spectacle, that goes with each game. Part of it's draw is that with 16 games in a short period of time, there is a special feel to game day. Now there would be plenty of fans who would tune in every week over 32 or more weeks to watch the games every week. On the other hand there will be plenty of others who will start skipping more weeks, especially since there are more weeks their team is not playing. Giving up 32 weeks worth of Sundays to watch football all day, will not be what a lot of fans want to do. Heck it gives them an excuse to actually not bother watching every week, since you know there are 32 Sundays to watch football and half of them, their favorite team is not playing anyways.

More uninteresting match ups televised nationally might not keep the fans interest.

Plus let's face it, what any sort of expansion of schedule is all about is money, money, money. That is the reality of US Sports I know, been alive and following US Sports longer than most here, but that doesn't mean that sometimes it is okay to want to see the sports not just about money, money, money.

As far as bye weeks go, I would like to see them cluster them up in the middle of the season, this getting a bye week after 3 games is dumb. During say weeks 8 and 9, one week half the teams are off, the next week the other half. Everyone gets pretty much the same benefit at the same time.

I find the NFL season quite short to be honest and offseason drags painfully. But that's probably because I'm accustomed to footy which every two years is basically all year round and even in the in between two seasons it's still a short summer with the old muppet hat on :)

A bye every other week is excessive I agree. But one two or even three more per team wouldn't extend the season significantly, would mean more NFL televised games, and overall would probably result in slightly better overall quality of matches.

No shit. Summers are hell without club football and the NFL (and NCAA football). We're basically left with baseball and a bit of NBA.

And baseball doesn't even get interesting until the pennant race, unless you're one of those fanatics like Cubs fans who've never been to Illinois but wear a Cubs cap every day.

Only thing that gets me interested are the golf majors.

Ah yes can always rely on a golf major indeed. Only 4 days though =[.

Two-three more byes and the season would start in August. Given there is enough to follow through free agency and the draft that'd leave about 3 months or so of nothingness which would be manageable.

I wonder how the medics would view it though. Better for health as more time for recovery or worse as longer seasons (and inevitably more training and more force in games as players might be more fresh). It's an interesting idea - has it ever been formally discussed by the NFL?

I miss RedZone so much :( NFL needs to hurry the feck back

Pre season in just over a month. That'll be good, at least something. Not to mention hard knocks with the Rams will be absolutely amazing to watch.

Looking forward to that too. Should be the best one yet with the obvious move to LA. Facilities must be sweet.
