Neymar joins PSG on a five year deal

Moving the clubs in order to be main FK taker in your club seems tad overdramatic to me.
Being the single biggest hero since the age of 16, or even earlier in a country that still considers a loss in a 1950 world cup the biggest tragedy in it's history does that to you.

Such a big blow to Barcelona. Their second best player leaving for an interior club.

If he wins the CL and Ligue 1 it's hard to see how he'll be denied the Ballon D'Or.

Why is Ligue 1 below the others? PSG and Monaco have outperformed Serie A and the PL in the Champions League, in previous years.

Maybe so, but he'll never win the BD by not winning the CL or the World Cup.

Why is Ligue 1 weaker than the others? 3 reasons to start with

1. Because the champion in that League sold their best players to teams ranked 4th in England for example.
2. Because the best team in the league pissed themselves in front of Barca even though they had a 4-0 advantage.
3. Because only one team in that league has ever won the European Cup/Champions League. That's about the same number of times as Romania and Yugoslavia.

Take your pick.

When is the last time a BD worthy player played in a league outside the big 4?

And why do you think that happened? Maybe because there are no great teams to play for there? OK, now PSG is a good team. They need another PSG and they maybe get in front of Bundesliga.

In the meantime we are struggling to sign Perisic
Yeah can't believe we're not willing to spend £50m on him and bend ourselves over, also throwing Martial AND Darmian in there for good measure, it's an absolute disgrace!

No, because there is more money out of those leagues. Don't kid yourself, players move for money.

Pointless nostalgia, but I vividly remember when Andy Cole signed for us for 7.5 million quid. It was then the biggest transfer in history and such a big deal that it was one of the main stories on the BBC nine o'clock news and their manager Kevin Keegan had to face Newcastle fans in person that night outside St James Park to try and justify the sale, they were so angry. This kind of transfer fee shows what a difference twenty years make.

TL; DR I'm old as f**k

By all means - you'll get no argument from me there. I mentioned ego and money before I mentioned the CL thing - but to give the fecker a minimum of credit, I guess we can include a possible French Galactico "project" in his reasons for joining, i.e. the possibility of them buying so much talent that they'll actually become a real threat (which they've been on the verge of becoming for some time now).
Yeah, that's fair. It's not as if he's moved to China. PSG are among the best placed clubs atm and have money others can't dream of.

1. Pogba
2. And the second team (Monaco) beat Man City soundly (and Arsenal 2 years before). PSG have had the better of Chelsea recently.
3. Next you'll tell me that Primeira Liga and the Eredivisie are better than Ligue 1.

I can for the life of me not understand, what the third best player (and possibly soon best) in the world would do in Ligue 1 at 25.

His ego must be the size of the moon, if it's only because he want's to be the main man.

Money. It's always about money.

I won't be able to sleep tonight because Barca doesn't have 3 of the world's best 5 players anymore, but only 2, among them the guy considered to be the best ever by a plethora of experts, top managers, and football legends. On top of that there is a real danger that Barca might get 2 world class talents like Coutinho and Dembele. That's some kind of Greek tragedy right there.

No chance will you get Coutinho this summer. Liverpool will not sell.

So if Neymar leaves, are Barça still buying Coutinho?

Good luck.

Barcelona will now experience what the 2017 transfer market is like. Good luck buying form PL clubs - they are all minted and it has to be stupid money for a club to consider selling.

If Barca were able to bring in Coutinho + Dybala to replace Neymar, they'd have done well for themselves. Hard to imagine either of those players making a stink about a new contract extension every year and causing public drama, too. Neymar is magical, but he also seems to be a proper turd.

Is anyone else not frustrated we are not trying to get him?

All the endless shite from United that we are in to get the world's best and one is finally available and we do nothing?

I doubt that either club would sell, even for 120m Euros plus.

The market's ceiling has just been more than doubled by this deal and it looks like Mbappe will be similar.

Our targets this summer have been appallingly underwhelming.

We need some top quality and it looks like it will be another year without it.
It might have been different if we'd have signed Griezmann really quickly before they got news of their transfer ban.

What's with your tagline? :D

Not really. We can't afford to pay €222m up front (which apparently needs to happen with release clauses). We might perhaps be able to pay his wages but it would blow our structure.

Not at all. I'm thankful we are not in for him.

Barca fecked up not going for pogba last year. 90 mill is chump change for an incredibly talented but young cm. Even still, if they sign a world class dribbler like dembele to take men away messi in big games and coutinho, then they'll be fine imo.

You're definitely right, hence the big "if". The market is insane and surely the bubble has to burst here at some point soon.

It's just sad that this is all a PR stunt for Qatar before the World Cup. Trying to build the reputation by financially crippling the sport.

People keep going on, how are we not in for him blah blah blah. No matter how rich our club is, at the heart of it is the fact that we, along with 99.5% of clubs are businesses and for them to exist, profit must be made. The pure and simple truth is that unless the Glazers sell up to and equally rich tycoon who doesn't care about profits, we will never be able to afford deals like this...and I wouldn't want the club risking its future by trying.

Why is there more money in other leagues than in France?

Mainly circumstances, from a marketing standpoint there is less money to make in football because the sport isn't proportionally as big as it is in other countries for example Rugby is an important competition and it's also a competition when it comes to owners, Rugby owners are for the most part way richer than football owners. We have a TV environment were for decades Canal plus were able to dictate their price. Also in France we have the DNCG, french clubs are financially tightly monitored.

Good comment. There is a difference between clubs like PSG and clubs like Barca/United/Madrid/Bayern and the difference is that a club like PSG is like an entertainment service for some mega rich dudes. One is a corporation, a company, who has to run like any corporation, with regards to income, expenditure, debt levels etc. The other is a paid entertainment service. It does the job as long as you pay for it.

I pay for cable tv, HBO GO, Netflix. The sheiks pay to keep a football club, pay to keep a 200m. yacht, pay for their Rolex collection and some shit like that. They are all entertainment services in essence. I pay to have a good time.

If you are rich, you have a tennis court, maybe you go play some golf and do stuff like that. If you are extremely rich, you own a yacht and have a collection of expensive cars. And if you are unbelievably rich, you buy a football club.

There are people and people. You have guys like Bill Gates investing huge money to maybe cure cancer one day, and guys like this Nasser dude, who pays 600m. for a football player and his dad.

The whole thing reminds of a kid crying because he doesn't get what he wants (Barca's leardership), obviously a lot of money is also involved (money is the main motivator for his father as Neymar has basically no say in the matter). From this point forward, I'll only picture Neymar as a big baby. He wasn't good enough to be the main so they decided to feck off.

He said he wants to win th BD. Who is the last player who won a BD while playing in a league that is outside the big 4?

As far as the Ballon d'Or goes these days there isn't really a big four, just a big one. Okay, Neymar would be moving away from that one but I don't see how moving to PSG is much different to moving to Juventus or Bayern Munich as far as ambition is concerned. Each is expected to win their league but can be challenged and each is hoping to win the Champions League. Neymar could be the last piece PSG need for that ambition, especially as his arrival should make Verratti happy.

I think he's basically going there to stuff his stats and get Messi numbers in France, whilst getting ridiculous wages. Probably thinks he can win a CL there (Balon D'Or) and makes it easier for his chances of World Cup glory with Brazil.

If those are the standards we're judging them by then why is anyone wasting time on football? Barcelona and Bayern and Manchester United aren't doing much to cure world hunger.
