Shots fired @Šjor Bepo

This should be as good as Skizzo Pat breakup. Where's the popcorn?

It was a love/hate relationship.

On a serious note and sorry to spoil the fun, it was also a joke. Enjoyed working with him and probably couldn't pick a better person to guide me into draft games. (as I end that last sentence a weeping sound fills the room...).

If you want to reduce the numbers of really big names you could ban any players valued at 95m or more from the last draft. That might be too restrictive but using those values could be a useful way of doing it

Don’t want it to be too restrictive.. 2 players per manger would be 32 players blocked and that should be quite a bit

I'm not sure how many players were worth more than 95 it wasn't that many. Either way just an idea. Also it might be worth using the values someway than getting managers to block since especially new drafters may not know who is rated as highly as others

BTW, why was Santamaria rated so low in the last draft at 70m? He is always one of the ourstanding stoppers/sweepers in the game and along with Figueroa, Passarella and now Godin one of the best SA center backs of all time.

I don't think we discussed him individually. My feeling was that he has recently become questioned by I'd IIRC and doesn't have the ball playing ability of the highest rated CBs. The most expensive stopper was Kohler at 90-100m and I do think he is rated higher in general than Santamaria.

Nowhere near Figueroa in my book though. Just one of dozens very good center backs who happened to play in one of the best teams in history. And it's not that cheap — I mean Cannavaro was 80 mil

edit: definitely tier 2 in Edgar's ranking

A basic tiered ranking of popular CBs. Godin would at best be in Tier 2

Tier 1:

Bobby Moore
Franz Beckenbauer
Jose Emilio Santamaria
Franco Baresi
Daniel Passarella
Gaetano Scirea
Marcel Desailly
Frank Rijkaard
Paolo Maldini
Lilian Thuram
Ruud Krol
Hector Chumpitaz
Elias Figueroa
Alessandro Nesta
Karl-Heinz Förster
Jürgen Kohler
Albert Shesternev
Domingos Da Guia
Matthias Sammer
Fabio Cannavaro

Tier 2:

Rio Ferdinand
Sol Campbell
Oscar Ruggeri
Ronald Koeman
Roberto Ayala
Giuseppe Bergomi
Laurent Blanc
Jaap Stam
Maxime Bossis
Fernando Hierro
Oleg Kuznetsov
Alessandro Costacurta
Paul Mcgrath

Think he has been questioned mainly due to the time he played in and the systems he lined up in. It much easier to get exposed in 2-3 man defense against a 5 man attack, but his credentials IMO should put him above the likes of Cannavaro.

Kohler I agree is better than him but I’d put Kohler just below the absolute best and at Nesta level in terms of all time.

Would you rate him better than Rio?
Better than Ruggeri/Ayala?
It’s a tough one when we compare Godin and Rio. To me Godin is definitely the better pure defender out of the two. Better in the air and better when he sticks in and on the slide. Rio is the better reader and overal the better footballer. It very much depends on the system you intend to use.

As for Ruggeri/Ayala - yes he proved to be better than both. His peak level is at least equal or better and he has proven over and over at every level against all time goat attackers his value.

I’d have Figueroa, Baresi, Scirea, Beckenbauer, Moore in separate tier personally.

Then come the tier two with the Maldini’s (at CB), Passarella, Krol, Nesta, Santamaria, Kohler, Sammer.

Then the rest of Edgar’s list in tier 3.

Da Guia in tier 1 is just meh. I’d swap Cannavaro and Bergomi. Kuznetsov and Costacurta doesn’t belong next to the other names in the second tier. Vidic/Adams for example are better than both.

Beckenbauer 170
Baresi 150
Figueroa 130
Nesta 115
Scirea 115
Moore 110
Kohler 100
Passarella 90
Ferdinand 80
Cannavaro 80
Forster 75
Nasazzi 75
McGrath 75
Santamaria 70
Stam 70

If you compare Santamaria with the other CBs I don't think he's that mispriced.

@Enigma_87

Santamaria, Rijkaard, Krol (watch the 1978 WC, he is a top tier LB but never a top tier CB for me), Da Guia, Shesterenyov should be no where near the first tier.

Nothing against them, but relatively to the rest, they fall far behind for me personally. Maybe even Sammer too who might just make it in.
I would say Krol is one of the best liberos of all time after the likes of Beckenbauer, Baresi and Scirea. (Voted best player in Serie A, 1980-81, as sweeper).
