Next Draft - Ideas and Discussions

Yes – GK ranking is another possibility. We've talked about that many times – and it makes sense.

Easier to rank just the keepers too: Have a committee/neutral do that before the match stage – simple enough. Best GK, as per the ranking, wins the imaginary shootout.

I'm out... my missus is expecting our first and it is time I took a little break from all things Caf-related, and drafts are very time consuming! Once the cricket draft is done, going to take an indefinite break till my mojo for all things United comes back.

Congrats, almost as good a news for you as winning the draft final.

Seems that most people have an issue with fastest time goes first in reinforcement. What are the alternatives? Reinforcement in the same order as the original drafting?

I am also waiting for @BeforeKeanetherewasRobson to be back online. This was his draft idea so want him to be aroudn

If we get the thread up we might get some interest from folk who don’t normally frequent this thread but might be interested in the concept.

I don't really like the pick time limits that we see more often in drafts. You have 8 hrs to make a pick and that covers for timezone difference. I can understand the intention but there must be better ways of going about that. Having reinforcement order based in that is imo taking it a tad too far.

I wish we'd go back to having an 8 hr limit with no penalties for using allotted time. Our drafts are fast enough without needing more tweaks.

Just encourage leaving picks via PMs without counting time.
If we assume the purpose is to speed up the draft, it seems a bit silly to focus so much energy on saving an hour here and there when games typically take a week or so to get played.

There’s something to be said for enjoying the drafting process. Now obviously everybody hanging on for a persistent 8-hour offender is a pain in the arse, but equally there’s little fun in stressfully rushing things through just to keep the clock down.

Whats the draft concept?

Welcome to the Pre Premier League draft. It is a fantasy football draft where players are picked based on their playing time in the United Kingdom from 14/08/1971
(Start of 1971/72 season) to 02/05/1992(End of 1991/92 season). Here are the rules
  • There are 16 manager spots in all
  • All managers pick 12 players. Picking is based on a standard snake format, i.e. Manager 1 picks first, manager 2 second etc. until we reach manager 16. The picking order then reverses so manager 16 will pick again and so forth.
  • Players eligible to be picked are as follows
    • Having played for a UK based club (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) between the dates 14/08/1971 (Start of 1971/72 season) to 02/05/1992(End of 1991/92 season)
  • Player peak is defined as the period in which the player played during these 20 seasons. So for example a player who played from 1989-90 season to 2000-01 season would have his performances for only seasons 1989-90 to 1991-92 counted
Other General Rules
  • All managers have 8 hours to decide their pick, if not they can pick whenever they are ready while the draft continues. If you know you wont be online please PM somebody so as to keep the draft moving
  • Please note the time taken for each pick. In case of ties, teams with the lowest time taken to draft will win
  • In case you leave your pick with another person the default time allocated is 30 minutes or time taken by the person to post your pick whichever is higher
  • Please do not name unpicked players. Repeat offenders will be punished
  • Once the player in named by the manager or assistant, it is considered final. No changes to the player is allowed. Please be careful before picking
  • There will be 12 rounds of drafting
Reinforcements
  • After round 1, reinforcements are available to the managers
  • First Reinforcement round; 2 Picks per manager; Open Pool; Standard Snake format; Picks to be made in the order of lowest time goes first
  • Second Reinforcement Round; 1 Pick per manager; Open Pool; Lamb Style
  • Final Reinforcement Round; 1 Pick per manager; Pool is restricted to your semi final opponents squad

Afternoon @Indnyc .... back from London, start whenever. As pissing down most the time (and hotel had nice bar), used free time to put list of players together but appear to have left there (smacks forehead). Hopefully the middle-aged, Eastern European cleaning lady gets an interest in 70's/80s UK football as a result though.

Re time to pick, not a fan of pick times/tiebreaker - I think most people keep an eye on/pick as soon as they can (or leave picks with someone) but we've all got stuff on/time zone potential issues too. Maybe just use 8 hours as absolute max but hopefully players will pick quickly anyway if ready/on - assuming it averages about 3 hours a pick, 16 drafters can pick their first XI in 22 days?

@Raees congrats. Enjoy every minute, even the bits that seem tough.... it flies by.

Welcome back. Draft starts Monday 8am GMT.. You are 3rd on the drafting order.. Didn’t want to start without you

I think during the World Cup this year (either next draft or the one after) we should do some kind of international draft to celebrate during the wc

The current draft is almost at semi final stage.. Who is running the next draft?

This idea from @Invictus seemed great and @crappycraperson wanted to run a world cup themed draft. Any other ideas?

On a related note, a 21st Century No Mates draft could be interesting as well. A lot of post-modern players barely get their moment in the sun, so it would bring some of them to the fore, and unlike a 25-45 draft, you can rely on footage, comprehensive reports and detailed analysis rather than narrative or oral history. Some of the issues as regards the obvious Big-Two could be resolved by tweaking the criterion to: played in the Noughties and Twenty-tens but consideration for overall career peaks - which will make the pool both top heavy and fairly deep. Reckon the affair will be more inclusive and spectator friendly wrt. Average Joe Cafites as well - these drafts can be fairly highbrow at times.

I've wanted a modern draft for a while now. So I'd be happy if we went with Invictus idea. However, it does seem right to have a world cup draft during the world cup.

Sure we could fit in Invictus one beforehand and start the world cup one around the time of that kicking off.

I actually had an idea that combines both the aspects, but not looked into it too much apart from the initial thought.

Current WC draft with maximum 1 player per team. Can see obvious problems in picking from teams with terrible quality bar 1 or 2 players, but that should add to the planning and strategy part of the draft.

we need something fun next.....another board game(or monopoly again), 4 different criterias like we did with managers/clubs etc. but just change topics completely or something like that.

I dropped my last draft since the current one was already booked. I want to run the next one though. WC based

Will post sign up and rules towards the end of the week

Since its a WC summer, here's an idea

1. Each manager gets to pick 14 players in snake style
2. Every player's performances would be tied and limited to a particular WC.
3. You can have only 1 player from each world cup.
4. The allowed 14 WC's to pick a player are from 1958 to 2010
