New Zealand in England 2013

Cook had the right idea, Trott being Trott I suppose.

England need an aggressive opener. Cook and Trott are very measured. If the had someone opening who could score at 70-80% strikerate upfront they'd be in great shape with aggressive players like Pietersen, Prior and Root coming lower down.

Have you ever heard of Geoff Boycott?

An opener should be capable of sticking there all day, carrying his bat.

The opener needs to give solidity to the innings.

Mind you, Graham Gooch springs to mind.

Anyway, isn't Cook exactly what you're talking about?

I mentioned it the other day, Compton makes Cook & Trott look like Lara, should be dropped for Ashes with Joe Root opening

It will be 450 and a declaration. I can see the reasoning, i just disagree.

Looks a flat pitch now (effectively day 3) so i expect NZ to bat better on it this time round.

I can see the reasoning as well, but even if it doesn't rain tomorrow New Zealand will not chase this score down.

Why are they wasting time?

I guess the only positive in that session was that Trott decided to play some shots.

No heavy roller at lunch, looks like England are going to keep batting. I'll be livid if they bat until Trott gets a century/out.

Oh great, it's supposed to rain here later today.

So not only are they not going to play tomorrow, they won't probably get the overs in today. Yet they're still fecking batting.

If there's one issue I have against most test teams in recent years, it is that they take forever before declaring.

Was it really necessary for England to come back after lunch? New Zealand did the same in the reverse series and ended up drawing due to batting too long.

Weather permitting, England will win this test but I wish they would be more aggressive and declare earlier.

Good day for England, but as said above I think Cook is overly cautious. 420 would have been well enough.

I suspect that the England management didn't feel like having their bowlers bowl 2 innings on a trot, what with the Ashes coming up. That's why they didn't follow on.

Anyhow, I've been impressed with NZ. Especially their bowling & fielding. They are a far far better side than 8th in the test ranking. But the difference in class between NZ & England is finally starting to tell.

Yeah, I would say this about them:

Rutherford - Yes
Fulton - No
Williamson - Yes but he's not a number 3 yet, would be scoring more at 5/6.
Taylor - Yes
Brownlie - Probably not
Guptill - Something there, not sure if he'll be a test player though.
McCullum - Yes
Watling- Decent player actually, not a very good wicket keeper though.

If they get in Ronchi to keep, and then re-integrate Flynn and if Latham steps up they should have a decent side.

Totally agree with this, Compton is not ready for this level of test cricket, Root looks much calmer and sensible.

I also think the selectors were far to hasty in snubbing Eoin Morgan from the test side.

He's 29, if we're going to drop him for Root then it's unlikely he will play again unless there's injuries. Not that I disagree.

What's happened to Ryder? I know about him being attacked by why wasn't he in the team before that? He's surely a better option than Fulton, Brownlie or Guptill.

I also don't think McCullum is good enough to be a test player on virtue of his batting alone either and his apparently not in good enough shape to keep, but seeing as his captain now he won't be going anywhere.

But yeah, for me Rutherford, Taylor and Williamson are a pretty solid basis for future.

Ryder had disciplinary issues I think. Vetorri is a loss, a very useful batter

I thought Test Cricket was thriving in England? The West Indies could rival some of these crowds.

Friday - Sold out
Saturday - Sold out (1,000 on sale in the morning, not all those were sold).
Sunday - 12,000 in.
Monday - Shit crowd, only 7,000 but hardly that bad considering game situation and weather.

So

I think Root clearly looks a special player, he may be young for a opener but when players like this come along I think sometimes you just have to throw them in there just like we did with Cook. Also Cook should be good partner now for a young opener.

Surely they would be able to pack each day out considering England grounds are tiny. If this is thriving I'd hate to see it when it's struggling.

England's ODI batting lineup is so unexciting.

Without KP it is.

Thoughts on England's new red one day kit? I think its looks OK.

England calling up Boyd Rankin now. Love how they can just take another countries player when they're falling short.

Dernbach has all the raw tools to be a pace bowler and wastes it.

Incredible how consistently shit he is.
