New Left Back

It has been 3 years that we don't have a quality left back who can play almost every game. It's time to go for someone else, Shaw might has the talent, but his fitness and determination makes me in doubt.

I have no idea who should we sign. It depends on how Mourinho wants to set up his full back next season. Does he want to play 2 offensive wingbacks with two defensive mind midfielder who can cover them? Does he want to play 1 offensive and 1 defensive full back. Is he going to change Valencia's role to a defensive full back next season by signing an offensive full back?

Not a priority in my opinion we have Blind, Jose has picked Darmian for most big matches and if Shaw can get his form back-and his mind sorted-with one of the kids we have more than enough talent to pick from. Would rather see 25million spent on other parts of the team/squad.

No clue. I could see it happen, if he wants to leave, but haven't heard any rumours. Didn't follow the transfer news so far at all though.

Ah right, I just read a while ago that he wanted to go somewhere to get first team football which he knows is not going to happen at Bayern.

Personally I want Borthwick-Jackson and Mitchell to be given a chance to stake a claim for the role as competetion/back up to Shaw
Shaw at the moment is third/fourth choice as left back. There is no back up for Shaw, considering that he is back up himself (when he is lucky).

We need a top left back, Darmian has been decent recently, but he's not top class and he's not a left back, and none of CBJ or Mitchell (he's not even a left back actually) is good enough for that role. If we're going to spend big, then Alex Sandro will be my first choice, otherwise, one of Rafa Guerreiro, Dalbert or Mendy (in that order) will be my pick.

Darmien
Shaw
Blind
Young
Mitchell
CBJ

Its not like we short of options for LB, I think we will prioritise other areas

We also have Rooney, Fellaini, Tuanzebe, TFM, Blind, Jones...it's not like we are short of options in midfield.

Sarcasm mode off...we need a proper LB, we don't have one right now.

Mendy and Shaw will compete for the LB spot. Nobody including Pogba should be assured of a guaranteed spot. That being said, why should anybody have an issue with extra competition or greater depth and options for JM?

Who would think we would need a left back after signing one of the most promising talent in this position a few years ago.
Cause Shaw turned into an injury prone liability with a weak mentality?

That's like saying "Why are we trying to sign Griezmann when we let a promising talent like Depay go?"

I'm reluctant to pay 40M for Mendy based on the above post.

City have a habit of signing the name of the moment.
And they have Aguero, Silva x2, De Bruyne, Jesus and Sane. Maybe we should copy it just a little bit.

How is Ricardo Rodriguez - seen enough of him to know he attacks very well but unsure about his defending. Relatively young still too.

That's not my point.

I think with a bit of scouting you can buy a Mendy level player for half the price or less.

He's played mainly at CB this season and he's been injured a lot.

He was cool two years ago

I think Shaw deserves another chance to make that position his, we've got enough numbers but I hope Jose gives Shaw a run there and see how it turns out. He's been unlucky with injuries, shouldn't be abandoning young players so soon.

Too many people are delusional over English youth suddenly becoming new Ashley coles next season. They aren't close to united level yet, and these days fullbacks are crucial especially going forward. This isnt the 90s where youth took over and became staples for a decade or more, that kind of occurrence is extremely rare, especially these days.

Shaw has been crap since his leg broke. To think that we can challenge the title with an uncertainty like that is a joke. Meanwhile you have extremely high quality left backs on most top teams in England, even Gibbs and Montreal are better than Shaw right now.

Shaw has consistently been injured since he joined us, he should be a backup option, by no means should he be given up on however.

Yea, I never taught that Shaw would turn out to be like that. Which is why I am surprised that we might be in the market for another leftback. I hope he somehow manages to turn things around.

Yea, I agree. I would be hesitant as well. However, I believe that the market has inflated so much over the past few season, that £40m for Mendy would not look so bad. City bought Stones for £50 million and he has been more bad than he has good. Yet, he still looks like a positive investment for them in the long run because he still has time to develop and has showed some promising signs. So, £40m for a player like Mendy, compared to a player like Stones will actually be a good investment based on Mendy performances and stats. However, I believe we will miss out on him unfortunately, so really no point talking about it .

I think RB is more of a priority for us. Valencia can't possibly continue playing every fecking game. Even beasts need their beauty rest.

Think you raise a good point and maybe why darmian should be a good back up at RB if we get another LB too. Though darmian hasn't had good games on the right as of yet!

Would loaning out Shaw for one season, to a team like Bournmouth, be the worst idea?
I'd think a "restart" to his career might do him wonders, if he'd manage to stay fit.

I'd still take Tierney. Should be cheap, but I don't think Jose will.

Problem for Shaw is he won't be fit again until after pre-season and the transfer window closes, so he will become last choice by default and can't be loaned or sold. January window beckons for him.

Feck, is that confirmed? What's his expected return date? I'm all for keeping faith in Shaw though. If he puts his injury problems behind him, we have a hell of a player.

Darmian has returned to the form he started his Utd career with, Shaw is certainly worth giving more time to, Mitchell looks like he's got heaps of potential and Blind is more than capable of slotting in there. Not a priority area, I'd even consider RB a higher priority area due to lack of cover for Valencia.

If Mendy goes to City, who else is available? Tierney? Danny Rose apparently wants to leave from what I had read. He wouldn't be a bad shout, would he?

Emerson (Roma), Dalbert (Nice), Samir (Udinese), Theo Hernandez (Alaves), Alex Telles (Porto), Grimaldo (Benfica)

Ricardo Pereira and Henrichs can play there as well.

Looks like Emerson picked up a bad knee injury today, I watched the game because of the possible targets at Roma including Emerson.
