New Left Back

On his way to City apparently...
If so, what a great backup for when Mendy is fit again. We should be in for him if we are in the market for a LB.

With Davies playing so well for Spurs, I'm struggling to think of a reason why Rose to United for around 50M in January and then Spurs buying Tierney or Sessegnon for 25M and the rest of the cash going to raises for Pochettino, Kane, Alli, Eriksen and the 2 Belgian defenders to keep them longer doesn't make sense for everyone involved.

Not in January (Spurs won't countenance losing the LB competition/cover mid-season), but next summer perhaps, assuming we can sign Sessegnon.

How good is this Ghoulam? If we are interested he'll likely choose us over City since he'd be on the bench there because of Mendy.

A free transfer is always enticing. Still don't know why we didn't try to snap up Kolasinac.

He's solid all-round. He's a good crosser, tall and strong. I wouldn't say he's quite top tier, but would be a very good free transfer.

50m for a crock makes no sense for us.

We should sign Jorge from Monaco. Brazil has produced some of the best leftbacks in the world over the last decade-ish with Marcelo, Filipe Luís, Alex Sandro - and Jorge is the next player off that conveyor belt ahead of the likes of Zeca, Wendell, Arana, Dalbert and Emerson. Infact, he's quite comparable to Sandro in terms of his overall skillset when the latter was at Porto - good technique and athleticism and a solid understanding of the fundamentals of the positions. Neither player is as effervescent as Marcelo in an offensive sense, but they're both very well rounded for the position and quite adept in the defensive part of the game as well. Thought it was odd that the top clubs didn't target Sandro before he joined Juventus last summer in what was a bargain deal, and given Jorge's potential and age - you could argue that even £40 million+ would be a decent fee. Fairly tall for the position, too - which could be a bonus on set pieces.

That said, as others have pointed out: Ghoulam on a Bosman would be exceptional business - much like Kolašinac for Arsenal this summer. Probably not as good of a long term option as Jorge - which might be a deal-breaker for those that relentlessly fetishize youth, but he is at the zenith of his career, could play at a very good level for ~5 years (which is a lifetime in the current game), and would likely be a seamless fit in the team with his relatively complete skillset and good physique for the Premier League. Napoli play a very expansive style of football with breathtaking positional play, so I dunno how some of his success will translate to United, but he should be able to make a significant impact:

If Shaw doesn't get his massive arse in gear I'd be surprised if we didn't go for someone in Jan.

There are quite a few choices:

Grimaldo
Alex Telles

You wanna replace Shaw with another crock? Grimaldo spends more time injured than playing.
Alex Telles isn't good enough for United's level.

I would take Ghoulam, Tierney or Bertrand in a heartbeat.

Ghoulam has it all in terms of what jose likes in his fullbacks. Hes incredibly strong, very tall and up and down the flank all day with a great cross aswell. Been a massive fan of him for a while. Would love him here.

Tierney is a great prospect. Im from Scotland so i follow the national team, don't watch him for celtic but from what I've heard from ST holders are he is the real deal and i like what I've seen from him in the National team. Plus i have a soft spot for Scottish players playing for United!

Bertrand I think has improved a lot over the years and I think he could make it at the top 6 no doubt. As people have said here his level is similar to roses and their playstyles are similar aswell. I think he would do well here.

I know and it's a shame for Grimaldo because I think he could be brilliant. But I mentioned all those who could possibly be an option, not necessarily the perfect choices. Like I said, Ghoulam is my preference.

A little off-topic here but do you think Ricardo Pereira could be ready for a move to a club like United soon? I see in him more suitability for United's RB position than anyone else in the world.

I'd take any of them.

Ghoulam is superb and like you said, Bertrand has improved massively in the last couple of years. Better than Danny Rose, for me.

A mate of mine supports United and Celtic (yeah, I know...) and he raves about Tierney. I took it with a pinch of salt but having seen him play a couple of times now I have to admit, he looks the business.

I'd like Ghoulam, especially on a free. Played for some of my favourite teams, so add us to the list and he'd have my dream career!

Rose is an ok option, not positionally or technically great but very fast, of course he hasn't even came back off the injury yet, who knows how he'll be given his game is reliant on his speed and athleticism.

Kieran Tierney from Celtic.

Young, rapid, willing to learn, wouldn't break the bank.

We have three solid options in Ghoulam, Tierney and Bertrand. We should sign one of them next summer. But before that we need to sort out our present options in that position. We have

Young - LB + backup RB
Darmian - LB + backup RB
Blind - LB + backup CB
Shaw - LB

Darmian and Shaw are the most likely to leave as they play the least. Young can be given rolling one-year contracts as long as he can stay fit and play at his current level. If we do that, we'll have new CB + Blind for LB and Valencia + Young for RB. In case of further injuries, we can always play Rojo as LB and Lindelof as RB.

Best left back in the league when fit though. That's the big "if" though, having now been out about 7 months!

Imagine if we bought him for £40-50m and he was available as infrequently as Shaw

I don't see the point in getting Rose when he's injured so often.
I can't look past Bertrand as the best option really. He's premier league proven, a really good player and he's been at a big club before so knows the expectations.
I like the Bayern way of buying the best players in your league to give you an advantage. Of course if the option from the premier league isn't there by all means buy from abroad. But when you have a great option whose nationality matches your clubs it should always be first choice.
That's providing we could actually get him, I doubt Southampton would just hand him over despite them being seen as a selling club in recent years.

Yeah he probably is but I'm not sure if that's the highest praise in terms of what is out there.

Exactly, we don't need another crock LB, it's taken half a decade to get Jones semi regular.

You could probably get Bertrand & Tierney for the price of Rose. Even though he probably is still the best LB in the league, it's hard to look past getting two players for the same price as one - a good short-term fix and a potentially quality long-term one - especially when the one player is injury-prone.

I still think Ghoulam would be the best short-term fix, given the value in the deal and his assist record. But obviously it remains to be seen if he goes to City. I can't imagine he will though, being that he's cup-tied.

Is he actually injured that often, or is this just a one off long injury?
I suppose the big worry is that Shaw was a regular at Southampton, came to us, got that big injury, and then it's all been bits and pieces

We can't rotate between Blind, Young and Darmian beyond this season though.

Could you imagine the scenes on here about 4-5 years ago, when everyone was moaning about Young and Valencia being our wingers, if people knew that they'd still be starting, but at full back. Amazing stuff.

No thanks. Lame; I hope this doesn't drag out like Perisic and the rumours die quickly.

Why would we spend about 50m, negotiate with Levy, and buy a non-elite left-back that is just coming back from a long injury? Just because he's English? That's almost worse than giving Shaw 3 more seasons to prove himself.

When we chased Perisic in the summer it was like we were absolutely convinced that he was the only winger that existed in world football. There are so many better LB options out there than Rose.

Kieran Tierney from Celtic.

Tierney looks pretty impressive in those clips, and reminds me of a young Gareth Bale.
He could be a big star of the future.

I think we will wait for Rose to get back to full fitness and return to form before making any move. That's if we do.

He's excellent nowhere near Bale levels now or never going forward but a much tougher defender. Big heart the young lad. Shaw has more potential but something amiss with attitude or heart I guess from afar.

This lad Tierney looks very promising and screams of a United player in every sense. Young, talented and British, he shouldn't cost a bomb also. The thing is our current situation, with the available personnel we have for the LB position the more logical transfer would be an established player, not another young one. It's a shame really, but I think Jose will opt for a more experienced player if we buy one that is.

50m on Rose makes absolutely no sense. I would hate to see that happen, would honestly rather stick with our bizarre mish-mash of LBs.

As long as we never put Rojo there again. Dear lord.
