Neven Subotic

I don't overrate my country at all, I think they're average. But you are seriously overrating Serbia. And being clearly biased. The US performs well on the youth level. And yes CONCACAF is weak compared to some other regions, then again the US doesn't get qualifying groups containing Austria (who the US has beaten a few times), Faroe Islands (huh) and Lithuania (good basketball nation I think). Romania were quite shit in qualifying. That group was piss easy for France and Serbia.

The US is always grouped with Mexico, who would most likely qualify in Europe. Then the usual suspects like Costa Rica, Honduras, etc. Not world beaters but certainly capable of holding their own turf. Do Serbian players have to endure bags of piss and objects being rained down on them during away matches?

That said, I don't recall Serbia beating a fully stocked Spain. Perhaps the US and Serbia will meet in the second round come June.

Costa Rica and Honduras better than Romania? Please. Iceland would qualify in this qualifier or at least go through to the games vs. Asian teams or whoever they play in the end.
You also forget to mention that the teams in this region play way more games than any other continent in the world. Without those massive amount of games teams like USA and Mexico would be lower on the table and probably worse to boot since they wouldn't play as much together.

Shows your knowledge. Iceland wouldn't have a chance in hell in CONCACAF. Perhaps Romania or Austria would. How about Faroe Islands while you're on it?

Mexico are good, a team I rate but other then that you cannot compare CONCACAF with Europe. Sorry.

It was kind of obvious to me that Spain didn't give a shit about the Confederations, but well done it was a great achievement. Perhaps we will, lets wait and see.

I didn't rate CONCACAF with the entire UEFA you dipshit.

 what are you inferring?

The US national football team doesn't even compare with Serbia, you can observe on transfermarkt that US players have an overall market value of 42.850.000 € (2.142.500 € per player) while Serbia's overall value is 197.650.000 €, 4 times higher.

How many US players are there in the top European leagues? About 6, compared to Serbia's 40. You say perhaps they'll meet at the World Cup, which means either Serbia finishing ahead of Germany in the group stages (thus deservedly being labelled as of higher quality than the US) or the US ahead of England in group C (which means you'd seriously overrate the US)

Even if the US had as much a chance as Serbia in the World Cup (highly controversial as testified above), perhaps Subotic also wanted to have a chance of participating in the European championships.. which for all your appraisal of CONCACAF, is a competition of a much higher standard than anything taking place in North America these days.

Trademarket... oh dear. Another fantasy FMer.

If the US finished ahead of England it's because I overrate the US but if Serbia finish above Germany they proved themselves. Interesting take that.

I edited my mistake almost instantly.

I suggest you follow a similar path and edit out the absolute garbage suggesting Subotic chose his nationality based on what some chap told him ten years ago. As you say, he wanted to play for the best team, thus initially waiting for Germany and, when he saw he couldn't play for them, choosing Serbia.

Ten years ago? Can you read? He said that in 2007, not exactly ten years ago. I never said he wanted to play for the best team, of which they're nations not teams. He played for the US youth setup - why didn't he pick Serbia then?

True that, he hadn't even set foot on American soil ten years ago, though you like to think he ever had something to do with a country that merely offered his parents a haven amidst a traumatic period for Bosnia.

I'd prefer FIFA did away with all that picking nations anyhow and you can only play for your birth nation.

Just because it would imply Giuseppe Rossi playing for the US doesn't make it an exhaustive proposal.

What would happen of people born in the middle of the ocean? Rio Mavuba for instance. Do we create an international waters football team?

Not because of that. I wasn't even thinking of Rossi.

Stop being petulant. Mavuba is technically Angolan as his family was "away during civil war." Obviously there are isolated cases. Rossi technically is American where as Adu is not.

Not really impressive fitness wise. Doesn't Germany almost always play with a week between games with a nice break during mid season?
When you're not in Europe then it shouldn't be a problem for a professional football player.

I take your point but IMO its still impressive that he has played every single game this season.

Sky Sports | Football | Premier League | News | Subotic not talking to United

Neven Subotic's representative has dismissed reports claiming his client is in talks with Manchester United.

The Serbian defender is hot property at present, with numerous clubs believed to be tracking his availability.

He only penned a new contract with current employers Borussia Dortmund last summer but has attracted attention following an impressive 2009/10 campaign.

No official approach for his services has been made as yet, but it is expected to be only a matter of time.

Premier League giants United were believed to be among those keen to land the 21-year-old, but Subotic's manager insists that is not the case.

"We are still waiting for offers," Steven Kelly told Sport.

Rumour

"It is true many clubs are interested in Neven but for now he is only thinking about the World Cup.
"He is calm and ready to represent his country. Talk about transfers does not bother him.

"Manchester United? We have held no talks, that is just a rumour without any substance.

"I am good friends with (Sir Alex) Ferguson but that wouldn't mean anything if talks do start.

"Will they? Maybe. Steven is a Dortmund player but there is a possibility he could leave the club this summer."

Fair enough, I remember watching it and seeing no urgency from Spain at all. Maybe no urgency is a tad harsh, but they didn't look like they were busting a gut if you know what I mean.

I won't be under-estimating any team it would be foolish but Serbia's NT > USA's. I don't think you will find many people who disagree with that either.

The U.S. side is far better than a lot of people give them credit for, and could probably beat Serbia just as they beat Spain and nearly Brazil last year.

Rafael-Neven-Jonny-Fabio
With the likes of Cathcart, Smalling, Gill and Corry in reserve, assuming they make it.

Would solidify the back four for a good 7-10 years after the current crop has moved on. Add in a top class young keeper, perhaps that Neuer guy, and United should carry on.

Shows your knowledge. Iceland wouldn't have a chance in hell in CONCACAF. Perhaps Romania or Austria would. How about Faroe Islands while you're on it?

Seriously. We just drew against Mexico with a team made mostly out of semi-pro players. We can play defense. Netherlands only beat us 1-0 and 2-1 and we were one of two teams to score a goal against them in the qualifiers because we're good at corners.

We only lost to Scotland due to incredible referee biasness towards Scotland.

How many times have an Icelandic player been the MVP or the highest goal scorer in college football in USA?

We produce more quality footballers than all countries in the CONCAF bar USA and Mexico.

Would you call the MLS stronger than the Danish Premier League? Would you reckon an MLS side to do some damage in the CL?

American football is rubbish. I've seen it first hand. Played against teams from America, seen how they've done in European tournaments in youth level. It's not very good. And you're the best/2nd best nation on this continent.

Wouldn't say Romania is a better teams than ours. We're getting stronger every year. The Pepsi-league is getting stronger every year and more and more quality youngsters are leaving abroad and doing some damage. We don't even rely on Gudjohnsen in games. He's still our best player though.

Saying Iceland is on par with Romania is utter dross.

Also, Serbia is not better than the USA. Both are good teams in their own merit, and both should be underestimated at one's own peril. But then again, one team beat Spain whereas the other beat Faroe Islands.. speaks volumes really.

Ahh but you forget that Spain weren't really interested in the match, as evidenced by the crap lineup they fielded that day:

Iker CASILLAS (GK)(C)
SERGIO RAMOS
Gerard PIQUE
Carles PUYOL
Albert RIERA (-78')
XAVI
XABI ALONSO
Cesc FABREGAS (-68')
Joan CAPDEVILA
David VILLA
Fernando TORRES

Substitute(s)
Diego LOPEZ (GK)
Pepe REINA (GK)
Raul ALBIOL
Carlos MARCHENA
Pablo HERNANDEZ
Sergio BUSQUETS
Fernando LLORENTE
Daniel GUIZA
Alvaro ARBELOA
Santi CAZORLA (+68')
DAVID SILVA
Juan Manuel MATA (+78')

Listen I said before I don't underestimate any team. If I am being asked who the better side is though I will go for Serbia, we are stronger in nearly every area of the pitch.

Again, I don't feel that either Spain or Brazil played to their maximum capacities in that tournament - but I won't take away the USA's achievement in that game.

I think this debate will be settled on June 27th, 2010 at around 17:30 GMT in Free State Stadium, Bloemfontein

Subotic might have a funny time playing Germany in the group stages and the US in the last 16

i dont know.. he seems to like both countries a lot

I haven't ever seen him play.. Thankfully I will get a good look in at the World cup..

Maybe. Its a good chance that Lukovic will be preferred as he has the experience and is a perfect foil to Vidic. Much like Rio. Though Subotic's form the last few months has been improving, so who knows. I would imagine he would definitely play against Germany.

Well thanks to that red card we will now get a look at him from the start for atleast 1 game..

We are being linked with him again today.

Has he played in the WC, if so any good?

He played against Germany and they didn't score. Must have done something decent

World Cup Player Ratings: Germany 0-1 Serbia - International Football - Yahoo! Sports

Subotic – 8: His team's best defender, and candidate for man of the match. The Dortmund centre half provided support for Ivanovic and Vidic, and absolutely would not yield space for the German attackers to exploit. A rock in the center of defense

But SERBIA DEFENCE Stojkovic: With little to do in the first half, but looking a ... said he did poorly while (surprise) highly rating a London based player.

Subotic: Sloppy marking, but no costly mistakes. 5

He did ok.. Nothing special or of note in that Particular game and in their first game he barely had any time to impress.. Having said that I have never seen any of him other than these 2 games..

one for the muppets, this lad or Kjaer?

From what Ive seen Kjaer is currently the better player but I do like Subotic aswell. very difficult to assess how both will develop. Ive a feeling Subotic might be the better long term prospect. any thoughts?

Neven Subotic 'lined up as Rio Ferdinand replacement at Manchester United' | Metro.co.uk

The 32-year-old centre-back was axed for United’s 1-0 win at Everton following a suspect performance in the 6-1 humbling at home to City.

Reports are now suggesting the injury-plagued defender’s time at Old Trafford could be numbered, and speculation is mounting that Fergie has already identified £20million-rated Subotic as his replacement.

The 22-year-old Serbian international, who has represented the USA at under-20’s level, was at the heart of the Dortmund defence that romped to the Bundesliga title last season.

Subotic also comes highly recommended by his countryman Nemanja Vidic, and has previously revealed his desire to ply his trade in England.

‘A dream of mine is still to play in the Premiership,’ said Subotic.

‘One day in the future, I want to try myself out in that competition.’

Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Liverpool are also keen on the defender.
