Aside from the player himself, people are way too happy about buying someone that is 20-21 and not happy with getting someone in their prime.

Since when is 28 old? For one that doesn't rely on pace it means he's got 6 years left if he keeps taking care of himself.

As for price. Obviously the market is crazy but a player in his prime has always cost the most money. Ronaldo cost a lot of money for his time at 12m for promise.

Honestly, if the age is what's bothering you then you need some glasses of perspective. I'd always take a 28 year old over a 20 year old.
 
He brings balance to the midfield, Herrera and Pogba can push higher up the pitch. Also when you have a proper DM (who sits deep) it gives full backs license to push forward knowing there is a DM who is deeper.

As a individual player? It's bit underwhelming but from team's perspective he is good signing. Best part is Jose signed him for Chelsea and knows what he can bring to the team, so it's not like he will be unknown player for the coach.

Surely rival fans recognise that we have an excellent couple of mids in Pogba and Herrera who will perform better with a defensive guy behind them, rather than either sacrificing Herrera a bit, or relying on a now 36 year old Carrick?

It's about forming a team structure, not just putting fancy players in there. You look at Liverpool, haven't resolved their two main weaknesses still, weak defense, and lack of squad strength.

I would ignore Dumbstar. He's a massive WUM and contributes nothing 90% of the time.

I don't think it's needed for playing against smaller teams who will sit back. Think we'd be better just playing Matic with Pogba as that would free him up and then play Mata or Miki behind Lukaku.
 
If we can tie up Matic and Perisic (plus another CM of Fellaini goes) then this will have been a very tidy transfer window. Cautiously optimistic about the league campaign ahead.

Complete opposite actually, it's the lesser sides you need a Herrera even more otherwise it's sideward passes all the time

Did you actually watch us last season?
 
Good signing. Just what we need to free up Pogba and Herrera to be a bit more attack minded. Despite being a DM, the addition of Matic will likely result in us getting more goals from midfield.
 
I dont get the hang up with money. the club have loads and i would rather the club spend some of it on the managers choice. If he deems a very experienced title winning DM is going to help us win more trophies in the next 2-3 years then 40 million is well spent. His age doesnt matter as well, as we are buying him at his peak years, and Rooney apart, most players dont start dropping off until 33-34. We spent 30 million on a 21 year old winger who lasted a season. Lets at least see him play a dozen or so games before we criticise him ffs. Remember he will be coming in 'cold' as well. No time to bed in before the season starts.
 
People moaning about his age need to remember two things. Firstly we need an experienced player for this role. It isn't the sort of job you give a 20 year old kid, you want someone can play every week and who you know is up to the task. Matic is in his prime, PL proven and Jose knows him inside out. He'll hit the ground running. Secondly, he's 4 years older than Carrick was when he joined us 11 years ago. We could easily get 5 years out of him, maybe more. 29 doesn't mean the same thing all over the pitch.
 
I don't really know what to think of this transfer.

Matic was far from my first choice and, to be honest, I don't rate him that highly anymore, but we do need a DM and José has worked with him before. So, if he's willing to spend this much on him knowing full well what he's capable of and what we're lacking, we can only hope José's got his judgement spot on.

Jose just said he doesn't know if the Matic picture was real as he wasn't at the training ground. lol. He said 31 is a free number

Also said he isn't going to speak about Conte

Its done this deal. Very surprised it's happened. He will be a good fit. Not going to bother about the price and the age is just about right for a 3 seasons at least. Which is good enough.

Yes and for all of Herrera's hard work, I don't think he helps all that much in breaking down teams. Good player, and I understand that his style of play is what fans like to see, but I don't think he's as good as people make him out to be on here.

I just think Matic makes for a better partner for Pogba than him.
 
A great positive from this move is Carrick not being relied upon a lot. I think he's finished personally.
 
Happy with this. Would have liked someone younger, but it's not easy to get that in this market.

He will fill the gap we have in midfield and hopefully he will give Pogba freedom to roam, and create. That alone would take us up another level
 
Very good signing. Premier League proven, managers player and has exact attributes we lack in the squad.

In tough matches we will play with a 3 man midfield and can control the game.

In terms of age, fees and position, We have spent 20m to upgrade Schneiderlin for a year older Matic.
