NCAA College Football 2017/2018

Play calling and execution are on point for Miss St right now, but the biggest thing they're doing is running the clock down by using all of the play clock. Best thing an underdog can do in a game like this.

Dan Mullen has been so conservative in the fourth quarter.
That and in the last series specifically he was backward in his playcalling.

He goes behind schedule on 1st down and is 2nd and long, but then takes a shot deep. 2nd and short is when you do that. Then he does a designed QB run on 3rd and long. That's what should have been called on 2nd down to get back on schedule for a 3rd and short or 1st down.

Mississippi State punted from the Alabama 40 on 4th and 3.
That in and of itself isn't a bad choice. "Go to overtime at home, go for the win away".

He was playing a field position battle there. His punter had put 2 inside the 5 already tonight. Granted, it resulted in a touchback, but his defense stepped up and forced a field goal that was missed.

PI in the end zone in the NFL puts you at 1st and Goal. College and HS it's just 15 yards.

Such a big difference in the rules there.

Y'all will beat us in the ACC title game. What you're doing right now to ND's rushing attack ... we won't be able to move the ball.

Much of that is the home field, night time, crowd intimidation factor. It will be a pretty good game in Charlotte.

It was a very bad choice. You're playing alabama. You have to play to win.

I'll agree to disagree.

1) "you're playing Bama" works both ways. You're asking your O to convert a 4th down play against Saban's D.

2) I've been in games where the offensive coordinator decided to go for it and didn't get it, giving my D a short field to defend on little rest because of the short drive the O had. It never ends well.

If you posted about punting on 4th and 3 at the time that that play happened, then I missed it completely.

Even if you did, I agree to disagree with you... As would most other coaches.

I didn't post it here. Coaches might disagree but math doesn't.

On fourth-and-3, go for it almost everywhere beyond your 40.

We had a head coach in SC that used that method for his special teams play calling. He basically never punted.

After losing several games over a few seasons specifically because of his special team's strategy, he was fired.

Statistics cant account for things like how well your defense is playing at the moment, where momentum has swung in the game, fatigue of your offensive or defensive players in that moment, unexpected injuries that have occurred on both sides during the game, etc. THAT is why you don't have computers coaching football teams.

And my alma mater has a coach with 10 state titles and almost 400 wins who did punt.

Guess what? Ever other coach that's with him in the national high school coaching hall of fame punted too.

It's a silly fad that might work for a few outliers but to think that it should become "the rule" is laughable.

The play calling mistakes made by Mullen were made on downs 1-3, but not on that punt.

i just posted an anecdote to match your anecdote. i never said teams should never punt, you brought that up. i said dan mullen shouldnt haven punted on 4th and 3 at the alabama 40,
And I've already said that I agree to disagree.

There's so many variables that go into that decision other than math statistics.
