NBA Thread 2013-2014

Torn meniscus. Really sad to hear. According to the reports I read...it would've taken him around 6-8 weeks if he was to go for repair. Why has he been ruled for the entire season? Really surprising news. Anyways hopefully he will recover. I guess pacers and miami it will be in east then.

It takes 6-8 weeks if you remove the meniscus, which may shorten the career of an athlete. It ends up being essentially bone grinding on bone, he has chosen to repair it which takes longer.

In other news Kobe has signed a 2 year extension making him the highest paid player in the league. 49.5 million. so much for doing whatever it takes too win.

Anyone watch college ball? My friend is playing against no. 1 ranked Michigan State right now, no fecking stream will work for me! Only one available on firstrow and it doesn't work. Can't find any other site streaming it. So pissed off.

Literally just after I made that post, the stream started working. Fingers crossed it stays that way!

Top 10 Teams in the League by win %

1. Pacers .938 (15-1)
2. Spurs .875 (14-2)
3. Blazers .813 (13-3)
4. Heat .813 (13-3)
5. Thunder .786 (11-3)
6. Clippers .706 (12-5)
7. Rockets .706 (12-5)
8. Nuggets .600 (9-6)
9. Mavs .588 (10-7)
10. Suns .563 (9-7)

Probably most surprising is the presence of the Blazers at #3, who didn't even make the payoffs last season and have made no major additions to their squad.

Then there is the absence of the Knicks, the #2 seed in the East last season. Only two teams from the east, the Pacers and Heat, are on the list.

Mavs and Suns are surprisingly ahead of the Grizzlies and Warriors.

Didn't the Blazers suffer many injuries last season?

I don't follow the league closely enough to know for sure.

I'm very surprised at the Mavs start. They can score but can't play defense.

It's sick to see only 3 clubs over .500 in the East (Chicago on .500) while 11 clubs are over .500 in the West. New Orleans at .467 (13th West) would be the 7th seed in the East at the moment (but only a game out of 6th seed).

I don't think the Blazers had any injury problems. Aldridge played 74 games, Batum 73 and Lillard 69.

Wesley Mathews is big for them, almost doubling his rebounding average from last season (so far) and a quality defender.

Robin Lopez is a new addition, averaging 8 and 8 and has started all 16 games. The bench is almost entirely new, though. Mo Williams is the 6th man and seems pretty comfortable there, 9.1 ppg and 4.8 apg in 25 min. Dorrell Wright and Thomas Robinson are new as well.

But their top 4 scorers were on the team last season, I guess their bench must have been really weak.

As a team they're shooting 41.5% from three! So, that can't last....surely.

"The Elias Sports Bureau informs us that the Pacers' and Blazers' combined winning percentage of .882 is the highest shared by two opponents at least 15 games into the season for two decades, dating to the 1993-94 showdown that pitted 16-1 Seattle against 18-1 Houston. The ever-braggadocios Roy Hibbert is already convinced Indy can join the seven of those previous 12 teams that opened 16-1 to make it all the way to the NBA Finals, but let's see how outside opinions about the Pacers sound after the Portland stop and a weekend back-to-back in San Antonio and Oklahoma City."

Exciting week for the Pacers, I'll be shocked if they win three straight against the Blazers, Spurs and Thunder, I'd take 2-1 right now.

JR Smith is horribly off form, Melo can't carry the team by himself. Chandler is out. Much talk has been said about attitude problems, but the personnel just aren't there to get wins.

The Grizzlies are trying to implement new offensive systems, and so far it's going horribly in my opinion. Letting Hollins go was a mistake.

I think this should show everyone who isn't convinced just how amazing Tyson Chandler is as a center. Much, much more important to the team than Melo. When Melo was out last season, a team with Lin and Chandler was nearly unbeatable.

The Blazer's record is a bit inflated imo. It will regress back to the mean as the season progresses..

Indy on the other hand are the real deal.

Unlucky Danny. The Heat just couldn't match up to the great teamwork of the Pistons. Detroit had 6 players in double figures and dominated the one man team from Miami. Fortunately, it is a long season and Spoelstra is a good coach so I think he can still turn it around and get this Heat team in the playoffs.

There is so much wrong in this post, I don't even know where to begin..

First of all, there were 7 Pistons in double figure, 7, not 6.

Second, there was nothing "unlucky" about it.. It was a fully deserved loss/victory.

Third, you can't call it a one man team, when the one man doesn't show up. Yes, when Beasley scores as much as you do, and Chalmers dishes out as many assists as you do, and Bosh out-rebound you (!), then sorry... You don't get to call that a one-man team.. It was a rather no-man team on that night.

Fourth, I wanted Detroit to win since the end of the third quarter, and I'm quite happy with the result. We can't rely on late game heroics every single fecking time, even when we're playing Charlotte! Against stronger teams, we're not going to go on a 20-3 run in the fourth quarter that often. I hope they learned their lesson.

Tough games to come...

And by the way, Detroit are definitely making the playoffs this season.. Good thing you didn't change your team in the off-season.. :p (I can't believe you picked the Jazz of all teams )

Minnesota Wolves, 9-10, 3rd to last in West ahead of the Kings and Jazz.

Boston Celtics, 8-12, sitting in the 4th seed in the East, thanks to being in the same division as Philly, Toronto, New York and Brooklyn and the strange rule that a division winner can't have a lower seed than 4.

But even if not for that rule they'd still be making the playoffs as the 8 seed.

What's with them?! Terrible start for both, and nobody saw that coming before the start of the season..

I believe I said hiring Jason Kidd (not entirely on him) was a stupid decision.

It would be akin to United hiring Giggs as manager after SAF retired. Brooklyn is built to win now, not in five years while a coach beds himself into the position.

Fear the Pistons!

Joe Dumars is redeeming himself, and making the GMs of the Nets and Knicks look, well, I suppose about as bad as they've looked for the last 10 years already.

Yeah, but they're a big upgrade on the kind of suck that the Pistons had been dealing with for years!

Charlie V and Stuckey are almost off the books, this is a huge opportunity! You could get into the LeBron sweepstakes, you could pick up one big player for those expiring contracts and some scraps, if it's handled right.

But yeah, Dumars will probably feck it up.

And by the way, the Knicks are kind of the Blazers reversed this year..

The Blazers didn't make the playoffs last season, leaving people wondering if they can make it this year, and suddenly they turned themselves into western conference contenders with virtually the same squad as last year. The Knicks have done pretty much the opposite..

Having said that, I still think the Knicks will make the playoffs in the end, and Portland won't get past the WC semi-finals (finishing the season with less than 55 wins).

The playoffs are a different beast altogether, the Blazers could easily fail to get past the west coast semi finals. They have no experience there and the Thunder and Spurs have lots.

I think the Blazers' shooting has to cool off a bit, so I'd put them down for around 62 wins, a .750 win %. That will probably get them a two seed and a match up with either the Spurs, Clippers or Thunder.

The Spurs may finally hit their wall, but until it happens they'll be the favorites to win the West in my book. But the Blazers are young and athletic, just like the Clips and Thunder, a tough match up for them, especially if the Clips can regain their last season form.

Most people would still pick the Spurs and Thunder for the WC finals, but maybe the Blazers get lucky and those two have to face each other before the WC finals.

But the Blazers are the team most likely to improve by the greatest margin, Lillard is only going to get better and better and better, while the rest of the team is young and talented. By the end of the season they may well be significantly better than they are now and blow everyone away.

Will be fun to watch.

"Another sizzling start for the Celtics, only this time they kept pouring it on. By the time they were finished, they had battered the New York Knicks in the most lopsided NBA game this season."

Oh, the Knicks, thank god for them, just mentioning them makes me laugh...
