NBA 2024-2025 ; Lakers Land Luka

If I was a Dallas, I think that I would give up on basketball, that trade is terrible for a generational talent. I like AD a lot but he is injury prone and way older, there is no way they couldn't get a boatload of picks and young talent in a multi team deal involving the likes of Buttler and Randle.
I have a friend from Dallas who's feeling this way and is basically indefinitely boycotting the Mavs.

Being a main character in a trade where 99% of people thought that Shams was hacked, not to mention NBA and NFL players being stun locked, hell even now people are still scratching their heads, one first round pick and 31 year AD for 25 year old Luka, ONE, offering him to fecking Lakers as your first and only phone call, who ever is GM of Dallas, wouldnt want to be in his shoes right now.

Honestly can’t believe it, as a Lakers fan, short term it definitely hurts the team, but long term getting a generational talent like Luka, who now will be the face of the franchise for the next ten years after Lebron is gone is unbelievable.

If the Lakers can get a center before the deadline we can still do some work in the playoffs imo.

Also losing Christie hurts, he was a consistent player for us this year, but wow, what a trade.

Also Ainge can’t resist getting in on a trade like the pick fiend he is.

He probably thinks that he is a genius with all the calls he is receiving from other GMs.

Was dead certain it is a fake news at first. The most shocking trade I've ever seen and makes zero sense. Am curious if Lakers are gonna go for someone big now.

Wouldnt be surprised lul

Wait wait on top of everything Mavs fecked Luca`s money, maybe he doesnt care but so not only he cant get super max next one, they moved him out of no tax state to fecking LA. Reading all reactions and statements around NBA, this shit aint clean, Lakers dont even need a GM, such a easy job, imagine how that phone call went

Well, that’s bizarre.

Is he brutally crocked? Interesting to see if he’s more crocked than AD

The deal makes no sense. It's Herschel Walker on steroids, there is no way that it was the best deal, it wasn't even in the top 10, I'm pretty sure that a deal around Fox and picks was doable.

It’s probably one of the worst GM jobs in basketball tbf, outside of Nico apparently just offering up a generational talent, the Laker tax is real on any trade normally.

Do you have examples of the Lakers tax?

After such a genius move in the draft to get Luka in the first place which everyone praised to get rid of him this way and get so little in return.. assuming they targeted and wanted AD which is why they called the Lakers surely they could have get another 1st round pick from the Lakers or I don't know Austin Reaves as well? Am sure Lakers would say yes to that. Just makes no sense

Luka is pretty fat tbf ;)

This is insane.

What am I missing?

What is in this for Dallas?

I think I figured it out.

Neither team wants to give their guy the super max. This way, BOTH teams get to pay less. Even if either party feel they got a little less in the trade, the financial flexibility makes it a win-win.

i actually think you've got the best take, and you're probably on the money. But then surely there's an argument to be made that you open the door to everyone to get the best picks deal or something? The secrecy of this makes it another level, and i'd say Dallas didn't get anywhere near enough.

ALL STAR COPIUM

apparently mavs called the lakers to offer them luka. wilddddddd @Desert Eagle @RobinLFC

I think there was always an inkling that Luka would be a Laker one day but I thought it'd take an AD type offer where we gave up Ball, Ingram, Randle and picks and pick swaps. I like Max Christie and AD is amazing but without a doubt the Lakers got a great deal for at worst a top five player in the league who is just about to enter his prime. Our future post Lebron is now much brighter now that we know who the main star will be and how we should build around him. This season is probably a punt though no team in the league will want to face a team with Lebron and Luka in the playoffs.

I also love how we've got the spiritual successor to Magic and Lebron in a Lakers jersey now.

Dallas could have gotten a better haul from a few other teams in the league though?

I don't really get that one, neither team got flexibility, at least not by default. Both teams have the current players Bird rights and they will both have supermax slots when both players will be able to extend. Furthermore, Doncic will get a supermax from the Lakers while the Mavs would be crazy to give one to 35* years old AD. The deal is great for the Lakers but it makes no sense for the Mavs.

* If his contract actually ends in 2028, I'm not totally sure.

I actually get trading Doncic. But Jesus. You have to get more in return. Much more.

It's an embarrassing deal for the Mavericks, any other explanation is just wrong. Trading a top 5 player at age 25 is bad but trading him for AD & one pick is nothing short of pathetic. It's the kind of trade that wouldn't be allowed in our fantasy leagues so for the actual GM to do it is absolutely crazy.

They are built to win now, that's true assuming AD remains healthy, but their near future is cooked.

Yeah, that's the thing. The whole thing becomes even worse when you know they made the finals last year, so basically they were already built to win and their future was secured with Luka.

This has to be the most bizarre trade ever. The only thing that could somehow justify it would be Dallas winning the ring in this short window they have. And am not sure they will be able to pull it off.

and another part of this, does "the window" even hold if the entire Mavs team is like "wtf bro you sold our best chance of a ring". Does Kyrie start talking about the Jews again and then it's over?

I take pleasure in the Cowboys trolling Dallas fans year in and year out but even they don't deserve this

I’ll find some for you, but many teams have asked for multiple firsts for players and then sent them out for much less to other teams.

It happens to everyone because the contracts that you send aren't equal but I would really like examples of that tax because I don't have one in mind.

I was dead certain it was a fake, and a very unrealistic one at that, when I saw this early morning. Took me several minutes to fully comprehend that it’s real.

How does this get done with absolutely zero rumors prior to it actually happening? Not even a single word from either party, and it’s easily the biggest trade of the last 10 years if not much more.

Mavs could have got a deal with young player and picks, surely they would have got a huge offer from Spurs etc. but the problem with that is whoever gets Luka is probably competitive for as long as you can reach out into the future with your picks (think 2031 is the year). Of course Spurs could have given them Hawks/Wolves picks etc. but even then you may not be getting much.
