Kobe’s defensive numbers indicated his level is closer to T-Mac’s level of defense rather than the top tier that most people thinks he is.Statistically, his season was his best and he coasted off of that for the rest of his career. He had a DBPM of 1.6 that season, and he never came close to hitting 1 again in his career. For comparisons sake, Jordan was doing 4s and 3s in his pomp, and Lebron wasn't far off when he was at his best, either.
Kobe's career DBPM is shockingly, negative, which is ridiculous considering we are discussing someone whose fans exalt as a transcendent defensive player.
Like I said, Kobe stopped playing proper defense once he stared to focus more on scoring and while he can still get it done when he wanted to lock down someone for a play or two, he barely does that unless it’s necessary.
