With the reports of KD going to Brooklyn, Kawhi not joining the Lakers would see the league as open as it's been for quite some time.
it would be pretty fun to see kawhi who is almost universally respected become the new durant
He will receive backlash, but the big difference is Kawhi doesn’t have much, if anything, to prove, whereas KD did, and to many, still does. He’s already led two separate franchises to championships, dethroning two super teams/dynasties in the process, having just produced a historically great playoff run, so detractors won't have much ammo to throw at him.
More importantly, unlike Durant, I doubt Kawhi will care, especially if he’s in a place where he’s happy to be at, which should be the case since he’ll decide where he ends up. He was ridiculed and lambasted for sitting out the majority of the season during his final year with the Spurs, which only got worse when he demanded a trade, but he righted that reputation with a bang, and the end to his Spurs’ tenure is now an afterthought.
It’s been well documented how he's been keen to return to his roots in So Cal, and he’s been consistently linked to a return since the latter stages of his time with the Spurs. For league parity, it’d be best if he stays at Toronto or goes to the Clips, but it’d be fun to see the Lakers as public enemy #1 again.
Don't think we're going back after D-Lo, yeah he improved but there's a reason we let him go in the first place, I'd imagine.
The front office were desperate to get rid of Deng and Mozgov's awful contracts to clear cap space for a potential FA like PG, so they had to attach an asset to have takers. They had also drafted Lonzo who they felt rendered DLo expendable. Plus he had that snitching scandal which did him no favors. I don't think he'll be a bad acquisition if they fail with the top tier FAs.
