NBA 2018-2019

Durant is definitely not more famous than Curry. The whole of Asia walks around with Curry jerseys after LeBron and even in Belgium (maybe Europe to an extent, I have no idea), Curry has a bigger reach and influence. He's the second name people know if they are not into basketball.

Curry has also topped the NBA Jersey Sales list in three consecutive seasons if I'm not mistaken. He is the face of their franchise, not Durant even though he might be the better player.
You're probably right. On 2018, Curry earned more than KD, and were around even in endorsements.

I think that the money players get from endorsements is quite a good indicative on how famous they are.

Career-wise though, it isn't even a question. Bar in that 2015-2016 season, KD was always mentioned as the rival to James.

@Revan You're fooling yourself. This era has already become Dubs vs Cavs - first time ever two teams have met 4 years running in the finals. Steph will always be the face of the Dubs, and of course LeBron was the face of the Cavs. As @RobinLFC points out:

It is just going to get more pronounced as the years go by. Durant is a great player, but that's all he is. Steph Curry has changed the game. He is the best shooter of all time in a league where shooting is now the most important part of the game. History will remember KD in the same way it remembers Karl Malone (which is not a bad thing since he was an all time great), but Steph was/is a game changer and a winner. History is kind to players like that.

How will he be remembered as James opponent, when it is very likely that he'll end without any fMVP (and all fMVP when they played together going to Durant)?

Do you really think anybody is going to care about finals MVPs 50 years from now? Nobody cared about finals MVPs until the media decided to make it into a story. Could you name the finals MVPs from 10-15 years ago or back in the 80s when Magic was going up against Larry? Dubs vs Cavs four years running that's what will matter. Steph's team vs Lebron's team.

Do you really think anybody is going to care about finals MVPs 50 years from now?

Yes. Unless those people will watch the games, the way to know who is better is at who performed better in the finals. Which is fMVP. And if they watch the games, they just see it for themselves.

Yes, of course.

Dubs vs Cavs four years running that's what will matter. Steph's team vs Lebron's team.

Alternatively, it could also be that Steph couldn't defeat LeBron on his own (with the other 2 superstars). In fact, they needed both Love and Irving to defeat them the first time, and then they lost the second time. KD joined, and then it was 8-1.

Also, fMVP, pretty much every pundit rating KD ahead of Steph (and pundits write the stories), Kerr mentioning himself that, kind of make this KD vs LeBron.

Of course, I think it will be more LeBron losing from a superteam when the next two best players joined forces cause they couldn't defeat him on their own.

You're missing the point of the original article and we're just going back to arguing who is better right now. What the article is saying is that Wilt was better than Bill Russell but because of various historical factors Russell is remembered as the better player on most all time lists. Now the author did try to take it a step too far IMLTHO by saying that Steph would be remembered as a better player than LeBron which I think is borderline silly but I certainly think he will be remembered as a better/more transcendent player than Kevin Durant.

Remember as well 50 years from now the pundits will be today's kids and their kids and just a reminder who again is the player most kids want to be like?

Yes. Unless those people will watch the games, the way to know who is better is at who performed better in the finals. Which is fMVP. And if they watch the games, they just see it for themselves.
I think this quote hits the nail on the head. In 50 years people won't have watched all the games. History will base a player's place in the game on their reputation. Bill Russell won 11 championships and changed the face of the game on and off the court. Steph Curry has won 3 championships so far and done the same.

In the end it won't matter much since the dominance of Trae Young just a few years later will dwarve Currys and Durants achievements.

Kyle Singler lowkey underrated in the GOAT debate.

Lakers-Warriors and 76ers-Boston headline Christmas Day schedule.

Other games are Bucks-Knicks, Thunder-Rockets and Blazers-Jazz.

Blazers start the season at Moda against Lakers and LeBron. I kind of enjoy having all the spotlight on the opening day, should be plenty of fun and Portland have beaten Lakers 12 or 13 times in a row.

Going out on a limb and predicting Giannis will win MVP this year. Bud will do wonders with his development, he will easily be the best player he has coached by miles. Seems like he has bulked considerably since last season too and he was already plenty strong last year.

Leonard above KD and to a lesser degree Curry is laughable. I mean, he was never as good as them and no-one was mentioning him to be better than them when he was playing. Since then they won 2 rings being very good on both finals, with KD getting 2 MVP finals and suddenly he is above them. How does this make sense?

I said before, he has caught the Lucas Leiva flu. The less he plays, the better he becomes on eyes of many.

I agree with your premise but you're having a laugh with bringing up the MVP's as if it means anything. Everyone saw that there was one player that was most clearly better than everyone else, and it wasn't a GSW. There's no denying it.

Didn't know that the likes of Paul Pearce, Dwight Howard and many others were deluded Warriors fans. KD outplayed and defeated James on those finals. It was hardly like last finals when James played better but lost cause of no support. So it wasn't very outlandish to suggest that the top player in NBA has changed or was to be changed. Of course, LeBron followed that with best season in a long time, and put those claims to bed.

Except that it never happened. He didn't outplay James and he also had arguably the best roster ever assembled to back him up, whilst James was single handedly keeping Cavs competitive. You're having a laugh.

Figure that Portland stat will change this season. Btw, if the Lakers get to 50+ wins, do you think LBJ gets the MVP?

Yeah Lakers will beat Blazers this season but I’m not sure it will be on the opening day.

If he gets this team to 50 wins he probably deserves it but the problem with LeBron is that whatever amazing thing he does, people kind of expect this from him and it doesn’t get him the awards other players would have got for exact same achievements.

I think in the words of the great Roger Clemens you might have "misremembered" these finals. The Cavs were 1-8 over the two years and in 4 of the 9 games were beaten by 19+ points - they weren't THAT competitive. As to individual performances LeBron did average a triple double in 2017 but KD outscored him and went 50/40/90 from the floor while doing it. In 2018 LeBron had a great game 1 but 2 and 4 were blow outs and in game 3 (the one that was close) KD led all scorers. I still think LBJ is the best player in the game but in these last two finals KD was better.

It's easy to be 'better' when you can have a poor game and still win.

It's called Most Valuable Player though, not Best Player. The Dubs could've probably even won without Durant on the floor.

I wasn't referring to the MVP though. @cesc's_mullet said:

I just posited that he did.

No but you have been repeating that history remembers MVPs. They should also remember that James was robbed of several regular season MVPs and Finals MVPs then.

And it's also far easier to outplay someone if the players around you are ten times better than the players surrounding the opposing player btw.

Not me - that's @Revan

Ah okay, apologies in that case :)

Disagree with his point as well though, of course people remember (Finals) MVPs, they just got given to the wrong player imo and the whole "the Finals MVP should come from the winning team" is bullshit as well.

Durant was better in the last two finals than Lebron? I wonder if that's because he's on the greatest team ever assembled? What a pointless statement.

Ok I see what you are getting at. But there's huge asterisk's on that statement. Durant could never perform to the standard Lebron did with the Cavs.

Steph Curry just managed to go +1 in a web.com tounrnamet. Nowhere near the lead but that's pretty damn impressive, considering the field have focused on golf their entire life.

I saw some of it. He was actually 4 over at one point. Over the last nine holes he was 2 under which equaled the best score for his group.

Wasn't MJ a great golfer as well? Or maybe he still is, I don't know.
I've seen his handicap quoted in the low single figures (anywhere from 2-4). However whenever I've actually seen him play in pro-celebrity tournaments (it's been a while) he has never looked that great.

Better golfer - Curry or Romo?
Tony Romo just won the most recent pro-celebrity tournament. I think Steph was about 15th. Steph shot in the mid to high 70s in his three rounds and didn't look to be taking it too seriously. I think when he knuckles down like he did yesterday in the Web.com event he's pretty good. They both have handicaps less than 1.

Seeing as there isn't an active college basketball thread, I'll post it here: Kentucky just beat an Argentinian team that won the Argentinian league for the past three years with a 23-point margin.

I thought Argentina was a quite decent basketball country? Is that not the case, or would the top college basketball teams simply win every basketball league in the world apart from the NBA? Some crazy athletes in there. Duke is stacked for the upcoming season, it seems. Could be they have the top 3 picks in the draft next year.

The national team of Argentina, whose 2017 FIBA AmeriCup team lost a gold medal to the USA last September after blowing a 20-point lead in the championship game, turned the 2004 American march to gold into a now-infamous bronze-medal conquest (from Bleacher).

Athens. 2004. LeBron James Carmelo Anthony. Tim Duncan. Allen Iverson. The Dream team became the Nightmare team.

Not so good today. He went off in the last group of the day and by the time he got to the third hole there were 2 groups still waiting to hit so he had to wait almost 25 minutes before he could tee off. He promptly put 2 tee shots out of bounds at a 625 yard par 5.

UPDATE: Well after a quadruple at the 3rd he followed that up with 2 doubles and a 2 triples and one or two bogies. He finished at +16 for the round.

But he did birdie the tenth and the fourteenth.

The hold up at the third really got to him and it looked like he tightened up. After that it was just one disaster after another.

Reddish and Barrett will both easily be top 5 and could even be top 3 (Barrett almost certainly will and Reddish is more likely to be top 3 than not), however I reckon that Zion Williamson will fall quite a bit. Unless he can significantly improve his shooting touch, he will be in a niche that is hard to sell.

He easily was in 2007. By far better in the first 2 games, as good in the third but then scored the clutch 3 pointer which essentially won them the game and the tie. LeBron had a lot of help on those finals, Kyrie was as good as Steph.

On last finals, he was better in the last 2 games, much worse in the first one. Probably equals in general or LeBron slightly better, so would give it to LeBron cause of lack of support.
