NBA 2016-17

Just have to correct myself. Cavs have blown a 26 point lead, going to overtime at 111-111 now. This even though LeBron has played 43 minutes and Irving 39 minutes and counting :wenger:

On another note: Westbrook is well on pace to break the record tonight. 23-12-6 at halftime. Just 4 more assists.

What the hell did I just witness! Over the space of 3 days Hawks first beat Cavaliers in Cleveland with just 1 of their starters available, and now came back from a 26-point deficit heading into the final quarter and beat them in Atlanta too! Goodness.

Westbrook just beat the record!
Funny how even the Denver crowd wanted him to get that last assist and his teammates bottle it several times.

It's crazy, he's now sure to finish regular season getting a triple double in >50% of all games.

Edit: What a shot for the game winner!

 He just won them the game with a buzzer beater 3-pointer. Amazing! 50-16-10 as well.

@Synco yeah, Sabonis really bottled quite a few shots.

With no horse in this race between any MVP candidate, I appreciate both sides of the argument, and for once I think no choice is wrong. Storyline-wise, it's been one of the best regular seasons I can recall.
I rest my case... (I don't have a horse in the race either by the way)

Say again?
 It was a legit bottle job by the Cavs. But I'm sure they would've won in OT if LeBron hadn't wrongly been fouled out.

But they really must get their heads right if they want to get back into the finals. Hopefully the Raptors can capitalise on their bad form.

Props to Flexbrook but ref's won them the game with that absurd flagrant.
Flagrant 1 is unnecessary contact (don't have to be excessive). Westbrook was pushed while he was in the air with no attempt to play the ball whatsoever. That's a flagrant 1. The refs also reviewed the call and had a good look at it before making the decision.

no they wouldnt
Haven't really followed the NBA at all this season. So could someone please explain how Harden is even in the same conversation as Russ for MVP? Besides the Rockets being a better team, I just don't get it. As ESPN never forgets to point out, Westbrook is averaging a triple-double ffs.

Harden is much more efficient and leads a more efficient offense (even more efficient than last year's Warriors ffs!). He's led a worse supporting cast to a better record.

Yeah, nah. Gordon and Williams are the leading 6th man of the year candidates. Rockets have more talent around Harden than Thunder has around Westbrook. I don't think it is a huge difference but they are better IMO. The real difference is that Houston has a roster made for Harden so they function a lot better than an OKC roster that is built for Durant and Westbrook.

Harden definitely more efficient though. And wins do matter. I want Russ to get it and think he deserves it, but I can see the argument for Harden and he also is just as deserving.

I will be fine if Westbrook wins it. But, it amazes me how much people worship the triple double. And a lot of those same people bash analytics all day long.

Is Lue trying to kill LeBron? Why on earth is he playing him for 45 minutes in a regular season game?

Eric Gordon is 25th in TS% among SG, tied with Alex Abrines. Lou Williams has been good offensively this year but he's never played any defense. Houston's second best player has probably been Clint Capella. Would anyone have taken Capella over Steven Adams a year ago? Or Eric Gordon over Victor Oladipo?

Cannot love this man more. The fact that he has played every single game of the season combined with the way he plays is absolutely insane. One of the purest athletes around.

Russell Westbrook's triple-doubles are him showing up, not showing off

This was the first game-winning buzzer-beater of Westbrook’s career, but he leads the league with four go-ahead field goals in the final 10 seconds of games this season, according to ESPN Stats & Information research. Westbrook’s 247 points in the clutch – final five minutes, score within five points – are four shy of 2007-08 LeBron James for the most in a season by any player over the last 20 years. His clutch plus-minus (plus-85) ranks third in the NBA.

So based on the TS% you believe Gordon and Abrines are at a similar level?

They wouldn't have a year ago but that was when Adams looked like he was going to take a big step. He's still improved but it hasn't been a huge leap and Capella has definitely been just as good if not better. They probably would have taken Oladipo, yes. Like I said, I don't think the gap is that large...but IMO there is a marginal one. The main reason is that D'Antoni is a better coach and the roster is more suited to Harden. Westbrook also having significant stints without Kanter and Oladipo has hurt the team's record.

EDIT: The Thunder's back-up PG is Semaj Christon. Rocket's have Williams. The difference right there is too much for the rest of the supporting cast to make up.

If they gave the award at the end of the regular season, Westbrook would probably have a big chance of winning it. Harden was in the lead for most of the season but in the last 2-3 weeks combined with his wrist injury and Russ still showing up with top numbers has made him a favourite. Also, Rockets have a good chance of going to the NBA finals this season while OKC and Russ aren't gonna get anything in the playoffs so they don't have much of a reason to slow down while Rockets have to manage the roster carefully. Won't mind Harden still winning it but at this point Russ has overtaken him as far as this season's performances are concerned.

However, they are going to do the awards the week after the draft this time, and in all probability Rockets would be dispatching Thunder in the playoffs and that could (unfairly) influence the votes especially if Rockets go deep into the playoffs.

I think votes are tallied before playoffs begin.

I imagine the votes are done before the playoffs still. They are just not announced until the new (later) date.

No, that's not what I said at all.

Just look at it again, there was no push, nor was there any slap.

Superstars getting superstar calls.

That he isn't something to crow about. TS% is good for a rough idea of a player's offensive value but it's rough. There's a lot more to it.

OK. So which player do you rate higher? Taking into account TS% and any other stat you want

Thunder and Rockets are pretty equal if you take Harden and Westbrook away. Rockest might have a little more depth but overall their quality is nothing spectacular - Gordon is a good player, Ariza and Anderson are average, Capela is just starting to make impact. I don't buy that it's a better core than Oladipo, Kanter and Adams, all of whom were rated quite high even last season. It might be marginally better but that's it.
