Nasri To City - Done Deal!

I think we lack 'guile' over 'steel' and would be much happier with a Sneijder than a Toure. Saying that, a Toure style player would be welcome too.

I agree to a point, I actually think we need both styles. It wouldn't hurt to get Sneijder as he can actually take quality corners and free kicks on a regular basis. Also a very smart player, he would be my first choice of "realistic" player to sign but it seems like we're going for Nasri instead. Having said that, I still feel we lack an aggressive midfielder who is constantly pressuring opponents. Maybe Anderson can be that guy (I'm not convinced)... better get himself in better shape though.

We already have enough to beat Barcelona in a CL Final if we don't use shit tactics, Arsenal beat them in the Emirates, Real Madrid beat them in a Cup Final, they're not invincible. If you're asking will we be stronger than Barcelona, then no, it is practically impossible to match them by making transfers, it's certainly impossible for us unless we were to spend the best part of the £170m or so that's currently in the bank.

If we make the signings you mention we will have only one upgrade to our team from Wembley, I don't know how you can even think that would be good enough to make us favourites in a game against Barcelona. I think Ferguson realises that it will not be possible for him to overtake this Barcelona side, that's not what these transfers are about, they're about strengthening the squad and improving our chances, the same as any summer.

Im assuming by "you" you mean in general and not actually me?

Aside from that, fair points made.

Okay, im going to be the muppet to ask the question.

Say we do get de gea, young, jones and nasri, will we have enough to beat barcelona in a CL final?
Couldn't give a monkeys! Would definitely improve our chances of another League Title though, which is all I'm interested in...anything else is a bonus.

Why the concentration on Barcelona? We constantly need to improve and players like van der Sar, Giggs or Scholes will need some kind of replacement either way, Barcelona or not. Plus, other teams are not sleeping and it's not like the only club we have to think about is Barcelona. People should not underestimate Barcelona or for what it's worth Chelsea and ManCity.

Perhaps because we are looking to improve enough to beat the best team in the world by some distance so that we can win another CL?

No, you don't get my point (it might well be because I didn't express it very well): When someone suggests improvements, there's almost always someone else moaning why we are questioning our squad due to one lost game. My point is it's not only about Barcelona and not only about one lost game. Even if we had won the final, we would still have looked for new signings.

A lot of tomorrow's papers saying United have open talks with Nasri. Guardian, the Daily Mail and the Independent all saying there could be an £8m bid, which seems kind of low to me. Must be driving Wenger crazy all the same and there where times last year when Wenger was close to the edge.

"Shut up, Phil Weathers!"

The prices being quoted are too good to be true for someone of his quality. Mind you, if we got him for those prices it would be absolutely fantastic. The more I read about him, the more I want him here.

Well you have to remember Barcelona are pretty much a settled team. We're making a lot of important changes to the team. The problem against Barcelona is ball retention/winning the second balls

I don't think it is but obviously it'll boost the dressing room and when you factor in youth we'll only be better for it, but in the long run. If we get to the champions league final in the next few seasons, then Sir Alex really has cracked it. The average age of the team/squad has gotten an awful lot younger and if we accepted a bid for gibson/brown/oshea it's incredible how much experience we are willing to let go of in one summer.

Worst case scenario - Jones to play CM to allow Nasri to play in a 4 man midfield while he works on his tracking and competing

Like with Hargreaves and Anderson while Anderson was learning the role of a central midfielder

Would hardly be the end of the world would it

So Times, Independent, Daily Mail all going with a same story that United have held preliminary talks with Nasri. I think it might be true, guys.

I'm not saying that he'll join us, but I think we're definitely interested and he might be too.

Manchester United open talks with Samir Nasri | Mail Online

United open talks with £8m Nasri - Transfers, Football - The Independent

They may just be circle jerking eachother. Reporting the same information the other is, thereby giving the impression its legit. Not saying it couldn't be true, but that's how the media works, especially with gossip.

Same story on Talksport this morning.

IMO great spin by his agent

I simply cant see Wenger selling him to us at all, no matter if we were to bid £50m.

Well, the longer this supposed contract negotiation of theirs drags on - and should Nasri go out in the near future to claim he wants to join us - then there is very little Arsene can do about it.

Very true.Different situation to the Fabregas to Barca.

Arse can't hang on to him forever when his worth will plumet each day his contract draws to a close

add the Telegraph to that posse of papers - doesn't mean anything concrete of course but they have more credibility than most papers

8m would be hilarious

I don't even know what to think. Where do we play him?

Good point. If SAF were genuinely interested then he would have thought long and hard about where Nasri fits in and future of one or two players already at the club.As we've never bought a player purely because he's good then as an after thought debated where to play him....this still leads me to think it's a good bit of spin

He would be an excellent signing for us. He just needs to add a bit of consistency to his game. Being surrounded by winners will do that.

At £8m it might be a case of snapping him up because the price is too good to ignore, much like the Cantona signing (might being the operative word, of course).

There were other factors in that deal:lol:

If it happens, there's no way it would be 8m. We're getting Young for double that, in a similar situation, except he's not coming from a direct rival.

Well, taking into consideration what Wenger said (something along the lines of "One thing is for sure; we won't sell him to United" I don't think this is gonna happen.

On the other hand..

Chris Coleman, the Fulham manager, said Louis Saha would leave the club "over my dead body" after an inquiry about the striker from Manchester United.

and surprise surprise, Saha ended up playing for us with Coleman alive.

Well yeah, of course. I was just making the point that Ferguson might have only just been made aware of the possibility of getting Nasri for a steal and acting on that basis, rather than Nasri being a long term planned target. In that respect I think it bears similarities to the Cantona signing.

This is all hypothetical, obviously - I don't personally see it happening.

when the offical website says " watch this space" there will be some truth to this

I feel a bit sorry for the Arsenal fans. If one of our top players was behaving like this and making eyes at one of our rivals I'd be fuming. Even if it comes to nothing and he signs an improved contract, and he comes out and says "I would never have gone there, I love this club!" he clearly is at least encouraging us and considering coming here, so he's been a bit of a shit to them.

I don't even know what to think. Where do we play him?

I would think he'd be that creative central midfielder that we are looking to sign, so no modric or sneijder. I've been reading some articles of him, and they claimed that he did play in a deeper central midfield role when he was at Marseille and that his defensive capabilities are actually underrated.

certainly if Jones has been signed to play in deep midfield and Nasri ahead of him we will see a reshaped midfield at Utd
