I wouldn't mind seeing a front 3 of Nani Rooney/RVP and Bale. I like Falcao and if we have the funds great! but we are still 3/4 players short. A front 3 incorporating quick wingers (and Bales goals), and an improved midfield would take the pressure off Shaw and Jones/Rafael delivering week after week.

We really need someone to drive from midfield and we saw a bit of that earlier in the season from Di Maria. Just a bit of tweaking. We won't play the percentage ball and are much to safe. It's a shame Nani isn't an option. LVG was wrong to call him a forward. We know when he's fit, even if he's blowing hot and cold he's still capable of scoring and assisting. We've seen the same hot and cold from Di Maria since he's moved from midfield.

A midfield 3 of Carrick, Mata, and Blind lacks a lot of mobility and energy for me.

I'd go with one of Blind, Herrera, and Di Maria in a 4-3-3 set up like this.

------------DDG-----------
Rafael---Smalling--Jones---Shaw

-----------Blind----------------
----Herrera-------Di Maria------

--Mata-----------------Nani---
---------Rooney/RVP----------

Mata cuts in onto his left, and Nani can provide width or cut in as well when needed.

OR

------------DDG-----------
Rafael---Smalling--Rojo---Shaw

-----------Carrick----------------
----Herrera---------Blind----

--Di Maria-----------------Nani---
---------Rooney/RVP----------

Di Maria over Mata because of his pace.

He will not and can not be used in a 3-5-2 formation, therefore it's a massive shame. One of my favourite players, Nani. Would be a dream if the long term goal was a 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 as he would fit into those formations gloriously. And just think what a coach like LVG could do with Nani, he's already made Ashley Young look like a top footballer!

of the players out on loan nani is the one i hope is still going to be part of our team next season.

this loan deal seems to be doing wonders for the rejuvenation of his career.

If he comes back it will have to be as a starter, it is a bit risky because we know he can be injured alot but if he was going to have a mostly injury-free season and alot of confidence was putting into him he could be priceless for our team.
LvG will have to make a difficult decision, but i think he likes Nani as a player in general, this season there just wasn't a spot for him in the 3-5-2.

If we are going to stop playing 3-5-2 next year (which I don’t think is a certainty) then he could possibly still have a future here but given his injury record, high wages and inconsistency I think he will probably be sold.

He looks a different player at Sporting but I am not sure he would be able to replicate his form if he was to return. The drop in standard, the fact he is pretty much their star player has brought the best out of him but if he comes back I think he would soon revert back to the frustrating player we have always seen and selling him might be the best option.

Is the interview in Portuguese? (no sound at work) Do I need to rush home to watch it, or won't I understand it anyway?

Its in english. I wouldn't be in that much of rush, though its good to hear.
He says the club wanted him to stay in the summer but he wanted to go to sporting.
He said he was unhappy in manchester as the previous 2 years he was injured a lot and he missed his family and friends basically and needed a new challenge after x number of years.
Seemed he wanted to play more regularly too and play for a manger who rated him.
He doesn't criticise the club and speaks pretty fondly about his time here but makes if fairly clear hes happier where he is at the moment. I wouldn't bet on him coming back.

I wish him well anyway, i always liked him.

If we switch to a 4-3-3...lord I hope we do, I'd give him another season after impressing on loan.

The reason given for not playing 4-3-3 this season was that we do not have enough quality wingers in our ranks. So, even if we do swtich to that formation, I am uncertain that Nani will find a way back.

Sounds like he just needed to refresh after being plagued with injuries and not playing regularly. I really hope he comes back. I still rate him highly and LVG, given his background, is the right type of manager to show trust in Nani and let him be the world beater we know he can be.

I'd be up for bringing him back now. He'll bring pace and flair to allow us to be expansive in a 4-3-3, and has confidence with him, and probably more importantly he'll be linking up with better + like minded players. However for pure logistics with him being a part of the Rojo transfer it'll probably be next to impossible to happen and sadly I think the club are finished with him.

He played well against Swansea and is more suited to that Robben role than Di Maria. Nani's ball control is excellent whereas Di Maria is erratic but relentless. When it comes to delivery of the final ball it's the other way round however they could have been an excellent pair with Januzaj rotating when needs be for the two plus Mata in the middle.

Idd,
Van Gaal of all managers should know what he can offer.
Correct me if im wrong but one of his better seasons and performances was in the CL against bayern when managed by van gaal.

Don't think Van Gaal rates him. Also don't think coming back here is the right move for Nani either.

@caid thanks for giving me an excuse to post this. My word how good was he in this game! One of the best CL games I've seen even though I sobbed when we lost(the tie). Looking at Nani and Valencia, how far has the latter regressed since then. Rooney's star has certainly fallen since then too.

Off topic, but Rooney's pace for that Rafael chance. Incredible.

Aye,
always thought that season was a real missed chance. We kind of fizzled out that season with rooney getting injured and losing form after his best season by some distance.
Remember him being compared to ronaldo and messi that year and the comparison not being completely laughable.

But yes, nani was one of the better wingers in europe that year and could be mentioned alongside robben. And valencia was good enough to keep him out of the team at times.
We still had vidic et al and van der sar in goal. Guess it was a year too far for scholes and our midfield wasn't amazing with hargreaves disappearing that season and fletcher going the season after.

Thanks for posting the video anyway. Kind of hard to begrudge bayern too much with that robben goal.

Don't think Van Gaal rates him. Also don't think coming back here is the right move for Nani either.

Think this is probably true too though.

Crazy to think he started the first game of the season. If we hadn't fecked around and left our transfers to the last minute and had our team ready for those 3 games we'd probably have 7 more points. That's the difference between us barely holding onto 4th spot like we are now, and being in the title race comfortably top 3.

He was an epic failure here.....he played well for 6 months a few years ago....It's nuts to think that fans are crying that we loaned him out...Sure even Bebe looked world class last season when loaned out and fans on here were saying that he will come back and go straight into our first team...Nani simply is not cut out to consistently do the business at a club the size of Utd.....A move to a club like Lazio or Valencia would be good for him

Nani wasn't an epic failure, and he's in a different class to Bebé. If anything Nani gets slightly under-rated by United fans imo.

He only cost £17m and we got years of contribution out of him.

Hargreaves was an epic failure. Nani was a standard mid level signing.

Mate if you make a list of the best United goals of the decade, Nani would be involved in at least 20 and probably scored 10 himself. He's a superb player, maybe he's just not a consistent world beater, is that so bad? To have a player capable of brilliance 6 out of 10 games and have 4 decent ones?

You must have missed the other 18 months.

Epic failure, fecking hell. I rarely bother with the Nani thread anymore, but that's just a ridiculous statement to make, if Nani was an epic failure then so were a lot of our signings.

:lol::lol:

How's he getting on anyway?

I'd still like him back for next season.

If Nani was an epic failure, Anderson must be something below failure. Then again, he's on route to a testimonial.

Relevant to the away goals thread too, was so pissed after that.

Remember his goal against Tottenham? The tap in? That was great.
 It really was, no surprise that it was Gomes on the goal. He actually scored a few against them. The funny one you're on about, the screamer in his first season and then a really nice dink in the same season as the Bayern game. That's just off the top of my head, he might even have one or two more against them.

This loan could end up being the best thing for Nani and United. He avoids this state of flux we're currently in with the team structure, gets to play regularly, and regains his form. In the end we get back a great player when the team is stable.

I'd disagree with that. I like Nani, and want him back in a heartbeat. That said, I'd say he was capable of excellence in about 4/10, and the rest he was average or absolutely poor in some others. When he was off form, he was really, really bad.

The second Rafael yellow card was soft to say the least. But that was some game. I miss Gibson!! He could pass and shoot well. Rooney, Nani and Valencia were amazing that year. It's really too bad that Rooney's injury ruined the season. It all came down to Berbatov to save us but he didn't delivery and I think this is when Fergie had enough of him.

nani at his very best :( still remember after that hull game early 2010 where he suddenly became the player we were hoping for. and we've got valencia at his very best too.

rooney was bloody brilliant that season. shame about him getting injured in april, i really fancy our chance of winning the league and perhaps the CL as well that season with rooney in that kind of form.

Olic's goal is still infuriating to watch today.
