Moyes: "There's no budget" | Moyes told that he can spend as much as he likes

We don't know he was - that's become the accepted view because no one likes the idea that our new manager, in whom we necessarily place our trust, screwed things up. It's a lot easier to say, 'he got f****d over by the money guy.'

The truth is out there, but it's not in here. We don't know.

Personally, I find the notion that Woody wilfully frustrated the new manager's plans hard to swallow. Joint responsibility for our transfer strategy is more credible.

Personally I think it was United's transfer policy where we put a price on a player and don't move around it much. It happened all the time with Ferguson and Gill, we went in with bids that many on here deem low, we'd not move, get gazumped by various other rich clubs and the trend is continuing. The idea that Woodward is some incompetent idiot I find amusing.

Fergie was saying it before he went anyway.

Fergie said we he wanted one or two and that he wanted to tweak the squad but he was very complimentary on the players we had here already. http://www.theguardian.com/football/2013/may/03/manchester-united-signings-alex-ferguson He stressed how important Shinji would be for us this season, he said Phil Jones could be our greatest ever player, he praised RvP relentlessly even after a few poor performances like City at home in the league at the end of the season. He was hyperbolic and over the top with it at times but imo made the players believe in themselves by talking about how much he believed in them.

I'm not hypercritical of Moyes over this anyway because I think in his press conference where he said the thing about 5-6 world class players, he backtracked a bit in the following presser and started talking about the quality of the players that we have got. I think Fergie often played 'mind games' with his players in press conferences often bigging them up sometimes exaggeratively, but it instilled confidence in them and maybe that is just one more string Moyes will have to add to his bow. The DDG thing about baby steps, falling over and walking now in the CL presser before Madrid away is one such example from Fergie, before DDG went out and played an absolute blinder.
Pressure was building on Moyes and he was a little bit negative with some of his comments at times but I'm sure once the pressure dies down that will change, and he will have a more positive outlook on things.

I just hope even if there is an upturn in results he doesn't settle for not bringing in the players he needs to strengthen the squad in the next couple of windows. He should have been backed competently in the summer.

I'm surprised Moyes has been so open about wanting first 11 signings, it's always been our policy to go with the squad line. I was never a fan of him getting the job but to truly judge I think he needs to be backed the hilt financially.

Well there are huge question marks over how he has spent the money that he has been given so far, to be fair.

A very good way to cheese some of the regular starters off? Or genius management to let them know they need to up their games?

If it's the latter then it's a ballsy move from a new manager 6 games into the biggest job he'll ever have.

Well there are huge question marks over how he has spent the money that he has been given so far, to be fair.

True, but it's either that or get a manager with a better track record and more success under his belt.

Yes! Give him all the moneys. Let him revamp the team.

First Moyes needs to show that he can utilise flair attacking player instead of keeping it solid and safe

Top tier players won't do much good in a defensive set up team, ask England with their Gerrard + Lampard combo, keeping it tight and hoping for either Gerrard / Lampard to nick a goal magically.

First he have to create a tactic as a team, where one whole team functions, and only after that adding the cutting edge in the necessary area bears the maximum result. There's no point buying Ronaldo or Bale when he doesn't even have a set of clue on how to maximise their strenght (not pass it and hope they do something magical, but a solid team play that using them as spearhead)

I agree, and I have been over-stating the importance of the collective as opposed to the individual since summer myself. That said, in Moyes' defence, I believe this is one of his strengths, and as a 'team', his Everton lot were more organised as a unit than most United signs I've seen in my time. It was a pleasure to watch 11 men all on the same wavelength as opposed to a reliance on individual brilliance.

If he can bring the Everton type of system to United, but with superior players, I'd be all for it.
