Mourinho extends contract to 2020 (option for a further year as standard)

So what does this actually change? Other than, presumably, give him a nice little bump in his salary.

One very optimistic view on it is Jose must have been assured we're willing to spend big in the Summer and he believes we can overhaul City next season and win big trophies.

Glad there is stability at the club at least in the short to medium term.

Things are looking well.

Delighted.

Makes me wonder both parties' reasons for opting for such a short extension. Did the club not want to extend him longer or was it his personal preference?

Confirms Jose is committed to the club as long as we want him. Gives us more stability both for the existing squad and to attract players this Summer.

On with the transition!

Yaaasssss - utterly delighted. Clearly the best man for us IMO.

Now we need De Gea's contract extension to top it off and then it's been a fantastic January.

That will be the ultimate but maybe we should save some happy news for later, the years is still long. :D

the faces look photoshopped!

Great news! I guess bringing Alexis in was the crucial point that made Mourinho decide about his contract extension.

Great news lads!

This is smart move. Things change very fast in football.

Glad that we're locking up our needed personel. Time to do the same with important players whose contracts are starting to run close.

Stayed longer at Chelsea and Madrid than any other manager in more than a decade.

The fact he could stick it out at two crazy clubs should be used as evidence he can do it at a sane one like ours.

This is very good news for us. I think it ends the speculation that he is off in the summer to maybe PSG.

I'm not convinced he will be at United for the long haul, but at this moment in time he is clearly the best person for the job. The football sometimes has a lot to be desired but for me there is no doubt that we are improving. He is reinstalling our winning mentality, he has attracted top players to he club that have improved us massively like Ibra, Pogba, Matic, Lukaku and I'm sure Alexis will too.
He has also overseen much needed improvements in the running of the club such as the scouting and medical departments. Happy with the job he is doing so far and expect him to continue to build towards the much fabled Premier League title.

That ends all the PSG speculation then. It's a good move, it allows Jose to think more long-term and the players know they will have him as a manager for a while more, which gives him more control I reckon.

Here's hoping it all works out in the end

Aye, good point. Didn't think of that. I was mainly coming at this from the idea that managers contracts are different to players. Signing a new contract doesn't really make it any harder for him to leave. That will depend on the notice period, not the length of the contract. But yeah, I guess we could infer that it means he's been given certain assurances about the summer. Which is good news.

I'm awaiting someone to complain saying this only means he'll get a big pay off when he has his traditional meltdown and gets sacked

Glad we've just went with a short extension, lets see how it goes over the next 18 months.

I'm not sure how to feel about this.

I'm not one of those #MourinhoOut crazies, and it's obvious he's the best manager we've had since Ferguson.

Sure, he'll get us results and win trophies - but at the risk of sounding like a right top.red, that's not why I support United. What got me into the club was the magic of our attacking football, something we don't always see under Jose and the oft-defensive style of approaching big games is tangibly different to what I'd hope to see a United team play like.

Still though, I think we need the stability right now and it's good the rumours of him leaving for PSG have well and truly been laid to rest.

Great news! The dust has settled. Stability is the key thing here. That would definitely translate to better performance on the pitch up till the end of the season.

Great news  Best man for the job for the foreseeable future.

His original contract was for 3 years so signing a new one for effectively the same period of time at the halfway point of his current deal seems like a pretty logical move for both parties to me.

Most likely done to ensure there is no lingering doubt with him entering the final year of his original deal. Otherwise not too long of an extension, ofcourse he probably got a pay hike.

I suppose a one-year extension is harmless enough.

Yeah, I can see them extnsing again this time in 2019 if all goes well.

It's a one year extension. The club can decide they don't want to activate the extra year. For someone that attracts top names and brings stability we've actually come out as bandits for not committing longer
