I think it's a case of not being able to commit one big lump sum on a midfielder right now due to the budget which is likely to change once there's clarity on the sale process.

I think from what's being reported, United have done the ground work on signing the likes of Caicedo or Rice and will look to move in if the circumstances change hence the reports about being kept informed on developments.

I think the budget allows for a Mount and Hojlund to be signed currently and the rest is dependant on when the Glazers make a decision on what they want to do regards the sale of the club. Hopefully the decision is soon.

What is the draw of Chelsea? I really don't get it. Horrifically bloated squad with no guarantee they'll play any better next season and no europe either.

Was the same with Enzo who could've waited until the summer to have his pick of clubs but forced his way out in Jan to them. I find it utterly bizarre. They're not exactly a prestigious historic club.

For someone like Caicedo who is was a toddler when Abramovich took over Chelsea, we probably are one of the most prestigious historic clubs in the world.

They've won the Champions League, Europa league and Premier League all within the last seven years, and they pay over the odds to the selling club.

They have installed a prestigious manager now as well.

Chelsea winning the CL or PL is a lot more believable than Arsenal doing it.

I still don't get it tbh. I equally would've understood why nobody wanted to join Utd last summer too btw, but at least we were playing in Europe and finished top half.

I hear you but often top clubs who had a bad season can usually still attract top talent. It only begins to be an issue when they're out the CL for multiple seasons in a row.

I know it's an example that is often brought up but it applies, we took Kante from Leicester who had just won the title, who United (among other teams) were interested in, the year we finished 10th with loads of internal issues, with an interim manager holding the fort, with no European football the following season. I'm sure United have managed sign top players in the past whilst not being able to offer CL football immediately.

If we finish 8th next season, I suspect it would be difficult to convince whichever top talent we're interested in to come us next summer.

They'll shift a load of deadwood this year and it's already started. They pay big money and have appointed a top class manager. They also have a history of winning trophies even after periods of transition.

Missing CL this year is a blow, and there are no guarantees they'll get back in, but there's no guarantees United, Liverpool or Arsenal will be top 4 next year either.

They're algo giving big contracts for up to 8 years.

I would agree except that Mount is going to cost a bomb as well, even if it’s a little less than Caicedo. Not like we are snagging him for 30m

Can/would Caicedo play alongside Casemiro, or more as like Casemiro’s “understudy” or backup?
He would play alongside Casemiro and could also play as the pivot. Brighton went up a level when De Zerbi replaced Potter and he started utilising Caicedo as a deep lying playmaker. Caicedo was playing as a box to box #8 before that.

Maybe it's time to test how much of a fan he actually is. He's mentioned both Real Madrid and United being his dream destinations when he was in Ecuador. But I suspect we'll need clarity on the sale process to proceed to sign Caicedo.

Ah yeah that was it, thanks. It certainly disincentives giving them out now though, from the club's perspective.

Yeah no worries mate - agreed re: the club, but contracts with a higher guaranteed figure given extra years may still be appealing for players who want security? Hard to say.

If we can get this kid for ~70 million we'd be crazy not to. Immediate improvement to the midfield.

100% of the Mount money should be diverted to this, stat

He'll end up going to Chelsea or something. Everybody ends up there. Whether they like it or not.

Different players but yes Caicedo makes more sense.

Caicedo will end up at Chelsea.
It’s definitely the type of signing they always get. Playing holding MF and freeing up Enzo, they will instantly be in the conversation for top 4.

Can’t see any reality where Caicedo joins us but im certain he’s a PL winning level midfielder.

Yeah fear he's Chelsea bound and Rice Arsenal

Caicedo and Rabiot would be perfect for us. Hopefully we'll get them.

Finally some English papers/journos linking him with us. Its It's all too quiet on that front for my liking.

My fear is whilst he is absolutely the right player for us it's the the wrong timing in the sense we splashed out £70m for Casemiro just last summer and we have too many other priorities in the squad. And without the takeover we won't have the necessary funds for this lad. A real shame if that's the case.

We can also get a bit creative like Chelsea have been. For example, we can loan for 10m this year, then compulsory purchase next year of 60m (amortised over 5 years). This get around the max five years, and we can put a slightly lower cost this year. [Before anyone says he will cost Xm, I just used numbers as an example.]

If you knew what you know now, should United have spent 80 million on Kante after the season when he won the league with Leicester.

This is how much of a surefire thing he is. We've spent more on lesser players.
