I don’t mean to be unkind about one of your players on your own forum, but I really don’t think McTominay would fit in our team in terms of style or ability. We play with a double pivot, a number ten, two wingers and a striker. McTominay would work for many teams as a swashbuckling midfield battler going box to box, which isn’t how we play. I think if you asked Brighton fans, 99% of them would prefer any of Groß, Alzate, Moder, Lallana ahead of him, not to mention having just signed Dahoud and Milner and being linked daily with players who much more fit our “buying profile”.

I would be absolutely astonished if Brighton were to have shown even a passing interest in signing McTominay.

I also think Brighton will hold firm and get their price for the player and will only show interest in possible P/X (which is extremely rare in football) if it was a player they already had an interest in. Most of our signings take years of tracking before we move for them. Colwill (who I don’t think we will get as Chelsea rightly want to keep him), Broja and a few other Chelsea options are possible as part payment.

I don’t mean to shit on McTominay, he could do a job for lots of teams, but I don’t think he is a player that De Zerbi would pick.

No worries, I agree he's an odd choice to be linked in terms of value and somewhat in terms of style (he's not a good enough pass and move type, but it makes sense to have some size and grit with Gilmour and Enciso being bully-able).

The problem is there's just a baseline level of technical competence that every player for Brighton has to be at and McTominay is miles away from that standard. In the modern game having a player who at times actively hides from receiving the ball whilst also being unable to do anything when he gets on it isn't really tenable for a club where every tiny advantage matters - especially in midfield where any opposition pressing scheme becomes miles easier when you're up against someone as completely nonthreatening in possession as McTominay.

I don't know that it's that open and shut. It feels that way to me, but he strikes a ball cleanly and managers do seem to like him, so it's possible De Zerbi or someone at Brighton thinks he can fit well and replace Caicedo's bite. If the rumour of your interest is true, my guess is it's for a lower fee than a team like West Ham, Newcastle, Forest, Fulham would pay for an experienced big counter attacking CM anyways. It would be strange if Brighton spent 25M on McTominay when you'd think they would fancy themselves to find a better player with that kind of money.

Sorry but I'd jumped in and wasn't the fella you were responding to - that was @UTAretro.

Have there been any concrete links between Brighton and McT? Feels like there's been speculation amongst some of the dregs on social media that this is feasible but personally I haven't seen anything even remotely tangible - plus in Whitwell's piece today on Mount he said United's interest in Caicedo was a smokescreen all along.

Just some reports I think, but that's all there ever is until things are genuinely close, right?

Roma was the team mentioned alongside them and that makes far more sense obviously (Mourinho liked him, Matic has done okay there, Smalling brilliantly and adding some young legs to play alongside Cristante or Matic behind Pellegrini seems sensible enough).

I think you're confusing team with club
No, not really. Your players are so random and Your club is in such a flux that it’s hard to define what you are anymore.
New owners who look clueless and players so randomly put together that we have no idea if last season was a fluke or not.
The only consistency you have is the fanbase. Everything else is as if someone created the club from thin air last summer.

He won't go for that much. I think Brighton will accept an 80M + 10M deal.
I'm not so sure, reports from the club have been pretty consistent for the last couple of months that we would look to the Rice and Enzo deals when pricing him and we'd be after 100M, and as we saw with Cucurella and White for example we don't tend to move from those positions.

Even if Chelsea seal the Caicedo signing, they surely need a couple more midfielders. They’d only have Enzo and Caicedo in midfield of top quality. They’ve let the rest of their midfield go.

It’s crazy Chelsea only have 3 players left from the team that won the champions league not long ago.

We'll see. I think with the promise made to Caicedo that you won't stand in his way if a reasonable offer comes in, it could be argued that holding out for 100M when there's an 90M offer on the table is akin to standing in his way. There is no bidding war like there was for Rice and there's no release clause like there was with Enzo, so the context around the 3 players are a bit different.

Rumours say Brighton have reduced his value to £130 million + extras including percentage to his previous club. Bargain. Brighton still want to sign Colwill at above £40 million although no new bid made.

Enzo and Caicedo is a tad overkill imo.

Many felt Casemiro and Caicedo would be too defensive for United, but Chelsea could end up with a £200 million midfield that doesn't create or score.

For sure. Even with Caicedo, it would just be him, Enzo and Gallagher left at the club plus youngsters like Hall, Santos, Casadei and Chuku who I'm sure Poch will have a look at first but at lest 2 of them will probably go on loan. But yes, more midfielders needed.

Redbull Chelsea should be there new name.

Can’t knock the optimism but Rice was promised what Caicedo was and they wasn’t moving on price.

I feel he will end up going for £100m add ons included.

You may have Enzo confused with someone else. Hes a DLP who is really creative. With caiciedo sweeping up behind him, it will give emzo more licence to go forward and make the most of his abilities.

Do you have a backup ? Think you will end up paying that money.

Reckon Chelsea will bid something like 90m + 10m add ons and get it done. Huge sums for a player who's fairly fresh to this level of football.

Sure, I'm not writing Enzo off yet, but he didn't show much in 22 games for Chelsea last season...a quick search says he has 2 assist(?)

Caiciedo has 2 assist in 45 Premier League games...so like I said it might be a very expensive duo that lacks creativity.

????

Enzo is among the most creative CMs in the world. The issue is how dysfunctional Chelsea were last year; Enzo was genuinely the least of our problems by an absolute mile.

100% I don't think anyone on the Cafe is suggesting he was...buy if Chelsea do get Caicedo it will be interesting to see them as a "duo".

Sure - personally I think they are an almost perfect complimentary duo, but then again I am both biased and also extremely dumb!

Anything to get Enzo back in the same role he was playing for Benfica should be Chelsea's priority - that they've prioritised this by going after Uguarte and now Caicedo is at least slightly encouraging.
