MLB 2022

I am frustrated that the stolen base had faded into almost obscurity but I hate rule #2.

Ghastly performance by the sounds of things. I was counting on him for Fantasy Baseball :(
Wish he could have eaten a few more innings up, we play 6 games in the next five days & had scheduled a bullpen game for tomorrow. Thankfully we are into September so rosters are enlarged with extra pitchers.

Might regret this pending the games tonight but still feels like the NL East lead switching hands for the first time in months should be commemorated...

What a huge weekend for the Yankees when it looked certain that Rays were going to pip them

Jeez. They've scored another 2 since I posted that. What's going on with your pitching??
Can’t put my finger on it. Just like yesterday, we’re already into our bullpen when we have five games in the next four days. Pennant’s gone, we just can’t backslide out of the WC. Thankfully we have the tiebreaker v. the Orioles.

Judge has my vote further compounded that I refuse to validate MVP votes for a player on a sub .500 team. Said team would still be shit without that player. Without Judge the Yanks are not getting the wild card let alone a probable division win. MLB should have another category called MOP - Most Outstanding Player.

Think he edges Judge. But MrMarcello makes a good argument.
I understand and somewhat agree with the point, but there is no “most outstanding player” award, so in its absence the MVP must cover both value and performance. Ohtani is a top 10 hitter and pitcher, and for me it is impossible to look past that.

Hard to look past Ohtani though.

Not for me. Judge still has him beat on WAR despite Ohtani's pitching prowess combined with hitting. Offensively and defensively it's zero contest.

I'm also firmly of the belief a "league MVP candidate" cannot play for a sub .500 team as it renders the term meaningless. Might as well redefine it's not most valuable it's most outstanding or best talent or whatever reason to vote for the player. I had these arguments twenty years ago in separate circles when ARod was in MVP voting for Texas despite the team being utter shit. ARod was the most talented player at the time and arguably the best hitter (in the AL for sure, Bonds probably edged him for overall hitting prowess) but winning MVP awards* was a crock of shit (*well once in 2003, second in 2002, sixth in 2001).

Sure, but if you look at the guidance for MVP voting it mentions nothing about team performance:
The rules of the voting remain the same as they were written on the first ballot in 1931:

1. Actual value of a player to his team, that is, strength of offense and defense.

2. Number of games played.

3. General character, disposition, loyalty and effort.

4. Former winners are eligible.

5. Members of the committee may vote for more than one member of a team.
Voting FAQ – BBWAA

- The ROY is for the best overall rookie, regardless of team performance.
- The Cy Young is for the best overall pitcher, regardless of team performance.
- The Gold Glove is for the best overall defender at each position, regardless of team performance.
- The Silver Slugger is for the best overall batter at each position, regardless of team performance.

So, for me it can only mean that the MVP is for baseballs best player in each league, regardless of team performance. The voting guidance backs this up. I don't necessarily disagree that players on winning teams should have some sort of advantage, but in a sport with archaic players right of movement laws it is difficult in my mind to punish the best player in his league for something he has absolutely no control over.

The Dodgers have a 20-game lead over second place in their division. That's insane. It's only occurred eleven times since the leagues established divisions, five went on to win the championship. Of those eleven times, eight have occurred since a three-division split and three in the past five years. There have been a handful of 18-19 game division wins.

2019 - Dodgers +21 - lost NLDS
2017 - Astros +21 - won WS (but should have been rescinded, ya cheating bastards)
2017 - Nationals + 20 - lost NLDS
2008 - Angels +21 - lost ALDS
1999 - Indians +21.5 - lost ALDS
1998 - Yankees + 22 - won WS
1995 - Braves +21 - won WS (shortened season)
1995 - Indians +30 - lost WS (shortened season)
1986 - Mets + 21.5 - won WS
1983 - White Sox +20 - lost ALCS
1975 - Reds +20 - won WS

Crazy that the 2001 Mariners didn't open up such a lead on the A's, but the A's themselves ended up winning 102 games that season.
