MLB 2014

What's the story with the draft being set for the 31st when the first games are at the weekend?

It's just a date I set so the draft didn't start as soon as I created it, it can be brought back. Kinda doesn't really matter given only you and me are in it Feeky :D

Yeah I was just wondering if you're able to do a draft after that. Oh well.

I would tag everyone who posted in last year's MLB thread but I'm not sure if I'm arsed.

Miguel Cabrera extension - 8 years, $248m. Total commitment for the next 10 years - $292m.

Here's the performance of players within 3 WAR +/- of Cabrera aged 27-30 and then aged 33-39.

So he's just got to play like Honus Wagner until he's 40? Cabrera's going to make damn near half a billion dollars over his career...madness

Well, at least the Tigers have their long term replacement at DH for V-Mart, unfortunitely its their current 1B

And in the rare, rare case that the Tigers actually get Max signed to a long term deal, the team would have almost $100 million dedicated to 4 players

It's weird because everything Dombrowski did over the summer was seemingly about extending the Tigers' window and making them more of a long-term contender rather than a World Series In The Next Few Years Or Bust team, and then this...

6 year extension for Mike Trout, $144.5m. Starts in 2015, goes through 3 arb years and 3 free agency years. Bargain.

Sabathia might just be goosed. Velocity below 90 and has allowed 6 runs in 1.2 innings against the Astros.

Turned on the Phillies game, expected to see Doc Halladay, forgot that he had retired for some reason

My favourite non-Tiger, was so desperate for the Tigers to trade for him before going to the Phillies. Would have been for Porcello and Ryan Perry. In retrospect, that's a much easier trade now then it was at the time. Still have faith in Ricky but back to back of JV and Halladay would have been incredible. Would have been JV, Halladay, Mad Max

He's basically all about location now, if he doesn't locate his stuff won't make up for it and today happens. I'm not sure how many miles left he has on that arm.

What do you guys make of the kinsler for fielder trade? Good business?
Enormous win for the Tigers. Got out of a horrendous contract and got what might actually be a better player in return, certainly one who figures to age better.

Yeah...also given how bad the tigers have fared offensively in the post season, having kinsler definitely helps instead of fielder

Rangers got rid a whining mofo though - they'll be happy too I guess.

I heard they were averaging 93 seconds but there was one in the White Sox game today that took well over 5 minutes.

Felt a bit strange as well coming right after a pitch straight down the middle was called a ball with nothing that can be done about it

Exact same thing in Pirates-Cubs. They spent 5+ minutes reviewing a potential HBP and then a few minutes later a ball a good foot outside the zone is called a strike at a crucial moment.

Just watching the Astros-Yankees game. Astros just let a pop fly about 10 feet from the plate drop in with the pitcher, catcher and two infielders all of five feet away. Only three games in and they have the play that will define their season

Also, what's with the gift giving shite going on with Jeter? Why the hell did the Astros feel the need to even give him the gift, and what's up with the cowboy boots?

Is this gift giving exclusive to Rivera last year and Jeter this year? Really can't remember but did other stars get the same treatment in their last year?

Edit: Nevermind, just found a link, appears that Ripken received some of the same treatment

Christ, people still in the stands and the game still going on...these people want the most out of their $8 ticket! AAA is the best

Way too early in the season, but I am surprised by Baltimore. They look flat, they're missing a few really important pieces but they've not been terribly impressive in the series with the Tigers so far. Jones has struggled and their pitching has been easy pickings

KC on the other hand, they looked like trouble...but it's the same with KC, always potential, time to actually translate, but their pitching looked great. Billy Butler, the ultimate Tiger killer, now has a side kick in Salvador Perez; the kid is amazing and is going to be a pain in the ass for years

Any KC fans on the caf?

Baltimore in the middle of a 5 run 9th inning

Been awful for the last two games and exploded this inning thanks to the Tigers awful bullpen. Phil Coke is a nice guy, and he had a great playoff run a couple years ago, but he shouldn't even be a situational lefty. Albuquerque looks unhittable one game and then can't throw a strike the next. Bipolar bullpen

Stupidly team-friendly contract too, Perez

Don't know if there is a better contract in baseball. They have three, relatively cheap, team options up untl 2019 FFS! Going to be sick of him by that time

And Escobar's contact is amazing as well.

Dave knows how to trade an overvalued prospect for established stars, but he gives out some of the worst contracts in baseball
