Missing out on / ignoring Mane and Kante was a big mistake

Mane no.

But Kante yes, every manager in the league would like to have him.

My view is that, Chelsea and us contacted Kante at the same time. But Chelsea made a concrete offer right away while we were only having informal talks with him. It was reported that even though Chelsea made their offer before Euros, Kante was not willing to sign at that time and was holding on the deal. I think he was buying time and weighing his options. So, i'm guessing that he waited for us, but we never made a formal offer to him, possibly because we were not able to make space for him.
Most or all resourses and efforts were spent on Pogba, likely

Mane would have been a good signing.. perfect fit for that right hand side and he'd have been formidable alongside Valencia. Much more physically robust than a Mkhi and would have been our Willian with end product.

Kante v Pogba.. I still prefer Pogba - he just needs time to come good. Kante suits this 3-4-3 formation and suits having a DM next to him, he'd have been a decent signing for sure alongside Pogba but it isn't the end of the world. I trust Mourinho to start scouting and bringing through some quality midfielders.

At some point, hopefully, people will realise our problems arent actually about who we buy but about what we get out of them. If the title could be won in the transfer window, we'd be absolutely sorted.

No one in their right senses would have picked Mane over Mkhi ffs. Yet, one is barely able to get mins while the other is acing it at Liverpool. Swap these players and we'd have a "Ignoring Mkhi was a big mistake" thread here.
Spot on.

Signing Mkh ahead of Mane was a completely insane decision, our failure is deserved

Yeah one was hot and cold all season (often on the bench for mighty Saints)

The other was the best player in Germany.

We.Were.Crazy.

Only if the manager is a megalomaniac. I still believe Mkhitaryan is comfortably the better player, Mane is just an excellent fit for Klopp's system.

I can only assume you have only ever seen Mhiki play for united. For Dortmund last year he was unbelievable , This for me was what I thought would be our best signing this summer, pity it hasn't worked out so far. I thought Mane would be a gamble ,its a gamble that worked out for Liverpool but a lot of people would have been disappointed signing Mane as he only showed glimpses last year for Southampton and as mentioned above was hot and cold all season.

To my knowledge,LVG was never followed up the interest in Mane and the ship had sailed by the time Mou arrived.

The Premier League is harder than the Bundesliga.

Mkh is 3 or 4 years older.

The biggest problem is that Mane is very fast and different to what we have. Mkh is not much different to Mata.

How the hell could anyone have predicted how it's turned out with Mkhi

Nuri Sahin at Pool, Kagawa, yeah who indeed has that magical crystal ball?

Not every player from another league becomes a Suarez or Ronaldo.

I'm still convinced Miki will come good, he's too good a player not to.

A few good games and Mane is now the one that got away! I think he's a good player, very athletic but I see him as one dimensional (he will basically finish off attacks & press with his pace which is ideal for Klopp's system). I think he would struggle to affect games in our current system - which probably says a lot about Mou's mentality because we are much less fluid, less people with pace around him and, crucially, no Coutinho.

We need Miki to play in that No 10 spot and rediscover his form, otherwise Mata. For me, main reason L'Pool look so good is they have a proper 10 and he makes the players around him better.

How many league titles does Kante have??.. Also were people not slaughtering him after that Ozil goal against them....

Where were you last year? What have you been watching for the past month? He's back to his old form.

Mane has played well cos he is a good player and has been playing consistently. Mkhitaryan is a good player but hasnt got a game or settled into the team. Mkhitaryan needs games before he can be judged.
As for Kante, we tried to sign him but he chose Chelsea. Nothing we could do.

Mane was my number one transfer target going into the summer, he would of fit perfectly in the team.

Kante is the best defensive midfielder in the league of course if we could of got him we would of been a better team

This isn't Football Manager, you have to make choices and sign some players at the expense of other players.

Pretty sure we approached Kante but he to go to Chelsea.

Would be pissed if we lost out Prem rivals for Greizeman's signature though.

Are we judging the success of transfers by November now?

Considering we have already created a congratulatory thread for the champions, all thats left now is to look forward to the summer transfer window.

Just an utterly pointless thread to be honest. Neither mane or Kante would have made any difference to our season so far. We signed better players this summer (pogba and Miki) and we still haven't got the best out of them so that's a bigger problem.

Just a further gripe of all the players we have missed out on over the years (Hazard,Bale,Neymar etc etc) why would you pick two players who are good but not world beaters that would have made a real difference.

This myth keeps on growing doesnt it. Perpetuated by people simply repeating what others have spouted rather than actually watching the player. He had a spell of 4-6 games around xmas where he went right off the boil and was benched. it happened to coincide with talk of him being sold to a couple of bigger clubs. Outside of that he was without fail one of Saints best players for every game they played. I watched every game he played last season and his perfomances are shown by his top 3 spot in all the Saints fan polls after every game. Consistently one of their best players but this inconsistent myth just rolls on despite evidence to the contrary.

It's our culture as a club that's the problem though. Kante/Mane would probably not have hit the same heights after being exposed to the poor confidence/discipline of our squad. Pogba/Zlatan/Mkhitaryan etc would likely be tearing up the league if they'd gone to City, Liverpool or Chelsea.

If we didn't Mkhitaryan then Mane would have been an excellent shout. It just hasn't worked out as of yet.

Liverpool would have taken Mickey over Mane aswell. He had far better stats.

I like Kante but I'd love to see someone like Javi Martinez alongside Pogba. He's been playing in defence for Bayern but he was immense alongside BS in Heynkes side.

We would be asking why they're not getting a game when they can offer something to the team.

Mkhi is a very good presser and a good fit for the kind of football Mourinho likes to play. I am not making a comparison but Zaha and Obertan were very fast and different to what we had too, it doesn't mean anything. Kick and run merchants without much else to their game get exposed even at the top in the PL.

I'd be happy with Mane but not totally bummed about missing out there.

Kante I think was a massive miss.

Are you a Southampton fan?

This was Mane though and not Obertsn. Anyone who watched the PL could see he was top class. I also think Mkh is better as number 10 bit we already have Mata for there

We could sign Lionel Messi in January and make him out to be a shite player after a few months here....

The sad thing is I'm not even joking
