Miscellaneous Reserve/Youth News

Joe Rothwell was released aged 21 years 6 months. He joined Oxford in League One. He had a couple of loan spells before leaving.

Joe Riley was released aged 21 years 6 months. He joined Bradford in League One. He had a couple of appearances in our first team and a small number of appearances on loan for Sheff United.

Devonte Redmond was released aged 21 years 9 months. He had an unsuccessful League One loan. Last time I looked, he was without a club.

Charlie Scott perhaps doesn't belong in the same category, as he made far fewer U23 starts. Anyway, he was released aged 20 years 10 months. I read that he joined Non League Altrincham recently.

Matty Willock will be 22 years 10 months at the end of June 2019.

Josh Harrop left aged 21 years 6 months to join Preston in the Championship but had an offer from United so we got £500K compensation (His PL start and goal may have influenced this figure). No idea how many years we offered him.

Pearson, Weir, Larnell Cole and Goss were sold around the time they turned 21, but I don't know how long they had left on their current contract or whether United were prepared to extend. Of those four, only Weir left in the summer, so the others might have had 6 months left.

The closest situations to Matty Willock's 2 year deal that I can see are Tom Thorpe, who left aged 22 years 6 months and Donald Love who was sold to Sunderland aged 21 years 8 months, so his United deal must have taken him at least up to 22 years 8 months. Love got some first team experience under LVG so not a great comparison.

With all the above, they’re still at the club at 21 plus, when they know themselves they have very little chance of making it and should move on, they are then thrust into lower league football and can’t hack it, if they made the change earlier they might have a better chance to acclimatise. I’ve said it before, we give them too much, too soon and they get in the comfort zone, you should see the cars these boys drive, it’s ridiculous.

Does anyone know about the terms of the loan deals for Mitchell, TFM and Tunzebe?

I'd be minded to bring these lads back in January to support a clear out of squad players who arn't at the required grade (starting with Rojo, Valencia, Jones and Darmian). Not sure if we have the 'recall option' or if they are signed up until the end of the season?

I doubt there'll be any clear outs in January without a permanent manager/DOF appointed
As Axel is a regular, he should finish the season at Aston Villa and gain the much needed experience.

And how many did Devonte Redmond spend, 15? He's sitting on his ass now without a club because he's a fecking shit footballer. So is Willock, so are countless others to play for our academy. We've signed Josh Doughty for Christ sakes who is even shit for Canadian standards.

Has nothing to do with my cup of tea. Willock was a below average youth player who couldn't get a game in the Netherlands and been a shit squad player for bottom SPL clubs. He'll be lucky to make it in the football league because he's a footballer who outside of a decent touch does feck all on the pitch. He's shit and there was no reason to give him a new contract.

You don't offer contracts to every 20 year old who spent some time in a PL academy.

Why are you getting so bent out of shape over it ? Why does it matter ? If you survive the cull when you are 16, and again at 18 and are still at the club when you're 20 you will most likely be offered a new contract unless you've asked to leave, now i'm not saying the club are not secretly hoping most if not all will turn it down, and quite a few do, some don't.

Where's the problem anyway ? It's not as though they are cluttering up the reserve side if they're out on loan is it ?

Do you suggest we kick out all the lads that it's obvious won't make it at United, because if that's the case we wouldn't have enough players to field a five-a-side team from the u16 team upwards.

You may know far more than me about the reality of loan deals, whether loan fees are involved, how much United end up subsidising wages, how much players like Willock get paid etc. My sense is that on average, this type of situation, a player with no first team experience and no Championship experience on loan by the time they turn 21, isn't likely to bring in much money when they eventually depart the club. There are some exceptions, United earned £1m from Ashley Fletcher's move to West Ham, largely due to his success on loan in League One. We also earned £500K for selling Sean Goss to QPR without any loan experience. But much of time, a player with a Willock type track-record, will eventually leave for free.

I do have a list of the age at which players first went out on loan, and their age when they left the club, but I don't have an idea of how long they had left on their United contract, in those instances in which they were sold rather than released.

I never pay much attention to what age players are when they go out on loan because 9 times out of 10(and it's usually obvious who the one is) the loan deal(s) is/are arranged with finding the player a new club in mind, and not them getting valuable first-team experience elsewhere to then come back to Old Trafford and United benefit from that experience.

Obviously United hope the lads make an impression whilst out on loan meaning we can claim a higher transfer fee when they are eventually moved on but even if the player doesn't impress and ends up leaving on a free transfer the club will still receive training compensation when the player signs-on with another club up to the age of 23, the only time(and I might be totally wrong on this)the club doesn't receive any compensation is when the players contract is terminated early, which very rarely happens anyway.

The academy side of the club isn't run with profit in mind but every few years there will be a Pique, Rossi or a Fraizer Campbell(those three alone brought in circa £20m to the club), then there are numerous others players that were sold for between £250,000 and £2.000,000 which often go unreported that covers the cost, or near as damn it of running the academy, so I think the club know what they are doing.

There are 3 different compensation rules, depending on the situation:

- If United take a kid from another team's youth system (while he is under contract). There is a fixed tariff according to the number of years the player trained in their academy and the rating of that particular academy. There are various articles online on the EPPP. They all say this applies to under 18s. Here is one summary: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elite_Player_Performance_Plan

- If a player under 24 is offered a new deal by his current club on at least the same salary as his current contract that had just ended, yet he opts to reject this, and chooses to leave to join another club in England. Fees vary according to professional experience. http://fullcontactlaw.co.uk/2016/11/compensation-players-24-mystery/

- As above but in Europe. Fees are significantly lower in this case.

So to apply this to some recent examples, for Joe Riley we got 0 as we didn't offer him a new deal. For Indy Boonen we got a minimal compensation fee as he moved to Belgium despite United offering him a new deal. For Ashley Fletcher, we got £1m due to the goals he scored on loan in League One for Barnsley. For Josh Harrop we agreed a fee of £500K as we had offered him a new deal but he opted to leave at the end of his contract.

Most professional players move either on free transfers or on loan. Transfers involving a fee are the exception not the rule. At League One level and below, transfer fees are rare. Even at Championship level there are perhaps about 5 clubs, who for financial reasons, are restricted to free transfers. If in summer 2017 Matty Willock was good enough to justify a fee, United would have known because the phone would have been ringing all spring with managers of PL or richer Championship teams wanting to take him.

The best thing for Matty Willock's career (as opposed to his bank balance) is that he finds a level at which he can get regular starts, then builds from there. He is far more likely to get starts if he belongs to club Z than if he is at club Z on loan from United. This also applies to the long list of players in the current U23 squad who aren't viewed by the club as potential first team players.

I'm struggling to see what Pique, Rossi and Fraizer Campbell have got to do with Matty Willock, or any other United youngster that reaches 21 without playing in the first team or doing well out on loan. The cash comes from the near misses, the players that play between say 5 and 25 starts for the first team then leave.

And i'm struggling to understand why you(and those who think similarly)have such a problem with the club reinvesting some of the money from those 'near misses' on giving Matty Willock a new contract that several members of staff at the club feel he deserves.

I'd hazard a guess that Willock isn't blackmailing the club with images of Ed Woodward or one of the Glazer bros in a compromising position, nor do I think they've given him a new contract just to wind you up, so there must be a reason for it(his contract extension), no he's not going to make it at United but the club will have known that when he joined as a 16 year old, maybe he's been a model young professional that wants to learn(as opposed to those youngster who think they know everything), hasn't given the club a moments problem and maybe he's got an aptitude for coaching as more of those 18 or older are encouraged to do, or maybe the club are just keeping him sweet so that if his younger brothers Chris and Joe develop as expected he(Matt)will put a good word in for the club......

There could be a whole raft of reasons why he's still at the club, but he's not hindering the development of anybody below him so what really is the problem ?

Ah, now we get to the crux of the matter, you think he's just a money grabber

I can see why you think Willock's deal sticks out compared to the rest of the list.

Also with that list is another reminder that we tend to think a lot of our young players but even the forum rated ones don't tend to make it. And I dont just mean not making it at United, but look at the clubs all these players are at and whether they are starting.

Pearson plays a lot for a mid table championship side in Preston, Harrop is a sub. James Weir is a sub for mid table Hull. Goss went on loan to Rangers from QPR

Larnell Cole is a league 2 player with Tranmere. Tom Thorpe is playing in India

Other than Cole and Thorpe all the rest are on the younger side of 24. So maybe in a few years they'll be at premier league sides and make it that far as they mature. I rated both Harrop and Pearson as possible squad players for us personally.

That Pearson lad was so overrated by fans on here it was embarrassing. Nowhere near good enough for United. He's a complete liability, runs round chucking himself into stupid challenges getting sent off.

Personally would try and get Aidan Barlow, Ro-Shaun Williams, DJ Buffonge, O'Connor, Bohui and Dearnley out on loan which would free up space for the 2nd year scholars to play U23, and the younger lads play U18 / U19's. Garner I wouldn't put out on loan as he's only just 17, like Greenwood, and maybe best staying with the club for another year.

Currently getting overrated by PNE fans too. I just don't see it myself that he'll make it in the PL, unless he calms down with the stupid cards he picks up.

He might be getting overrated but he’s easily their best player. If he sorts out his temperament he could make it in the prem, all ifs and buts at the moment though.

The standard isn't very high at PNE though I must say
Yeah that’s true, but I can promise that Pearson is regularly a lot better than you’d expect when he plays, he’s not perfect but he’s one of the more dominant midfielders on the pitch whenever I watch them.

@jb8521 , @khoazany any idea about this??

I'd say Hamilton, Williams, Poole, Bohui, Dearnley and Warren are the most likely candidates for loans on Jan. That would free up spaces in the U23s for the likes of Greenwood, Laird, Traore, Levitt, Williams etc and allows the likes of Devine, Neville, Bejger, Hockerhull, Helm, Denham etc to play more for the U18s or even couple of U15s/U16s like Shoretire, Fish, Odubeko etc

The quotes from Butt surprises me a bit as there're not many U19s who're at the stage of seemingly ready for loan moves unless they want to loan out Chong and Gomes on Jan which I don't think they will. Maybe Bohui, O'Connor or Ercolani. Don't think anyone would loan Tanner or Barlow at this stage as they are not even playing that much U23s football yet. Maybe sending Kovar on loan early as J.Pereira's coming back and we still have Woolston and Fortijek? The rest of the U19s squad are basically U18s, we rarely send those players out on loan unless it's to another youth team when they couldn't break into our U18s line-up.

It's natural to get over excited about our youth prospects I suppose. Its the dream to have 4 or 5 top players come out the academy together.

I thought similar about Wilson, Thorpe and Rothwell. Admired a lot of what Goss did too. Cole was very well thought of as well.

United: Alex Fojticek; Lukasz Bejger, Oliver Denham, Reece Devine; Mark Helm, Charlie McCann, Dion McGhee, Harvey Neville, Connor Stanley; Anthony Elanga, Largie Ramazani.
Colin Little is set to coach the boys with two games on Friday night - against JFV Eichsfeld-Mitte and AZ Alkmaar - before matches against Eintracht Northeim, Gottingen 05, Borussia Monchengladbach and JSG Uslar/Solling on Saturday. Sunday's fixtures will depend upon our group standing.

Like the look of this kid. Great control when dribbling. Doesn't look like much of a creator for teammates in terms of passing, but dribbling like that can turn into chances.

Hopefully we can get him and Sergei. Sergei being an absolute must buy. Looks like a goal scoring machine.

So according to rumors we've signed so far-
Noam Emeran(Amiens)
Adrián Corral (Villarreal)
for u18

Forson for u16(I presume)
Norwegian Lad possibly too

That's it right, or am I missing someone?

What about this Russian kid @In Rainbows is mentioning? Is there any info and links about him though? We never had a Russian at the club have we?

No there are't any news about us signing this kid.

and yes we've had a russian at our club. Kanchelskis.

We've apparently had him on trial last year and he's meant to return for another one in 2019. He is 14 and from Russia though so unless we do something illegal we won't be signing him for at least 4 years anyway.

Because they are not in the European Union? Otherwise it's 16 if I'm not mistaken.
Although he chose to represent Russia after the breakup of the Soviet Union Andrei was a Ukrainian, born to Lithuanian parents
I've just read that as well.
