Millwall fans - Will they ever change?

Exactly. I hate the 'pointless club' thing that gets posted at these forums a lot. It's so arrogant.

I agree.

There are no elite or top clubs without all of the 'pointless' clubs.

It's easy to support a top football club that wins things, have the best players and the big occasions. The fans who turn up week in week out at the lower end are everything in football, far from pointless.

No. Wasn't there a thread here a few months back trying to rally some support for them as they were in financial uncertainty and the OP got annoyed by the overwhelming consensus that nobody really wanted to help them - precisely because of this crap.

Exactly. It's not hard to see why people call them a pointless club. I'd be overwhelmed with joy if the club folded tomorrow so I can watch their fans like in that video cry into their pints for the rest of their lives.

Bermondsey is in South London, Millwall itself is on the Isle of Dogs but it's not where they play.

True they don't play on the isle anymore but they're still historically an east London Club, who's their fiercest rivalry with? Palace or West Ham?

Anyway, in regards to the problem fans it's a very small minority and personally I don't consider them a racist club anymore, I know a fair few Asians who not only supports club but attend home games with no issues.

I'm not even sure if it'd make it better or worse having no club. As you'd suddenly have a core set of these hooligan types without any outlet.

And these idiots will just go elsewhere, they won't just stop what they do.

Shame they never went under.

Yeah I feel sorry for obviously massive amount normal people who support Millwall but it's really really hard to like the club nevertheless.

I have a mate who's a regular at Millwall, he's spot on and says the same.

Weren't West Ham fans saying it was Millwall fans who attacked our coach to get their fans into trouble?

Ah the classic excuse!
I know Bristol Rovers, who have quite the hooligan element, often blame their City rivals in the same way

Interestingly, was only few years ago a section of the fans racially abused an Asian steward I know throughout the game. Nothing was ever done about it and he was just moved away from Millwall games.

They're surely not going to abuse their own fans in that way though?

It's not just the fans, people think the racist abuse to players etc happens routinely every week, it doesn't, these idiots come out to play when it suits and the club and it's good work suffers all over again.

We are giving them the only thing they want, and that is attention.

To be honest I think the reputation of the fanbase has becoming a kind of self fulfilling vicious cycle. The club attracts people who are drawn to the darker, more violent side of being a fan instead of the game itself. It has little or nothing to do with the area the club is based in anymore.

Obvious sentiments about assault aside, you have to be very drunk or/and stupid to stand in front of Millwall fans and sing about hating them.

Is chanting DVD racist though? I'm not sure.
not sure either...if you chanted something about plumbers if your team played against a team with a Polish player , would that count as well?

Bermondsey is a crap hole with Tower Hamlets right next door, even worse, the "fans" are just a bunch of racist scumbags who still think its the days of the firm and stuff, 'fraid not chaps.

That video is a real life reenactment of the scene from Black Books.

"Millwall, Millwall, you're all really dreadful, and your girlfriends are unfulfilled and alienated..."

Horrible club and horrible fans.
Bit harsh... I mean a small proportion of their fans have a horrible reputation which seems largely deserved (and that element seem to relish) but most fans in my experience are just like normal fans
I've been there I think five times to away games (Chesterfield being my local club)
I worked with people who grew up in the area and are season ticket holders there... honestly my experience is that it is a small element in my experience who seem to think it's still the 70s/80s and want to perpetuate their no one likes us... we don't care reputation

Tower Hamlets is north of the Thames and Bermondsey is south of the river.

Also Canary Wharf is in Tower Hamlets, it's not all rough. I used to live in the Wharf, actually next door to Papa Bouba Diop, never mind a wardrobe, he was a mountain!

The areas itself where the club is based and draws it support from (Rotherhite, Bermondsey, Peckham, Surrey Quays) aren't particularly problem areas racially anymore (Peckham has a reputation for roughness but is actually a very ethnically diverse multicultural area) The problem is the club and its reputation and the idiot fans who feel the need to turn up and portray an image which is at odds with the area itself.

These are areas (Peckham aside which has always been ethically diverse for as long as I can remember) that quite rightly had a reputation as having racist elements during the 70's, 80's and early 90's due to the BNP, Combat 18 and such organisations having a presence there, however its gone through huge changes since then and is now an area where you wouldn't expect ethnic minorities to encounter too many issues, the problem isn't the area its the club and its reputation.

The club don't have a racist reputation though. They were one of the first clubs to use black players, they were the first to have a black chairwoman, they have been one of the strongest in terms of commitment to anti-racism. Today's chants aren't really reflective of the club to be fair.

Well said, the club gets hammered when it's done so much to try and raise its reputation.

Troublemakers just see Millwall FC as an easy vehicle to pedal their vitriol on. Feel a bit sorry for the staff and genuine fans that they're tarred with the same brush as those intent on blatant hooliganism.

Wow! what a hard man. Punching a singing fan who has his hands up in the air. Real Green Street stuff.
Well if you're going to sing," fecking hate Millwall," as their hoolies walk past, don't be shocked when one of them reacts

This is so true.

Yeah.

"Chat shit, get banged" (J.Vardy, 2016)

Isn't that the case for all clubs in the UK especially?

Utd have had some pretty horrible "fans," in the past.

Whether it's a minority or not,it's Millwall and the media will love that

Actually it does and clearly you aren't looking back far enough as I've said that reputation comes from the fans actions during the 70s, 80s, and early 90's where I speak from personal experience in saying that their terraces were generally seen as a potentially dangerous place if you were black or other than white.

What goes on at club and boardroom level is one thing, what goes on at club and support level is another. The first real efforts to rehabilitate their reputation on the terraces happen around about the same time Theo Paphitis took charge of the club and did an very good job of combating that element during the late 90's before then they carried a reputation that they now seem to be reverting back to.

There is a huge difference between the way a club goes about its business and the way its supporters do, just google "Millwall" and "racist" and you will find a string of incidents mostly from the periods I've talked about but some modern day examples as well.

Just watched the goal .... Son certainly stuck 2 fingers back at the Millwall shite .... 3 amazing goals!!!:eek:
