Mike Phelan | Sacked by Hull. No shorts, no job.

Yes. And at times they get sacked for not doing miracles. Which in majority of cases harm the club more than if they let the manager continue.

The problem of Hull is not Phelan, but the owners. Same about Valencia as was shown by Prandelli.

Prandelli was never the same man after his wife died. The guy left football to take care of her and while he had a meah career after that, he never managed to fulfill his early promise.

I don't like seeing managers being sacked mid term. All I am saying is that top (and even decent ones like Del Neri or Ranieri) managers tend to overachieve. That what distinguish them from the rest.

I was replying to those who keep on making excuses about his sack. Managers manage period. If they fail to reach expectations they have to carry the responsibility for it. Its that simple.

I don't think that there's any low job in the EPL TBH. FFS there's a CL winner managing in the championship

What's the expectations for a club that started the season with 13 players fit to play, no transfer business and owner having no interest?

Hull is 3 points away from safety and in the League Cup semi. Relegation zone clubs like to sack managers hoping for a change of fortune but on the balance of evidence that's a harsh treatment, red tinted spec or not.

13 points in 20 games isn't good, altough its far less damning considering the situation.

He isn't a top manager and there's no shame in that. He's a decent coach who played his part assisting Fergie during the most successful period in Utd's history. He was hired full time to keep Hull up and they aren't going to be safe mid season.

I don't think you have a point here.

He's not currently a top manager but then Hull's his first job so being regarded as a top manager should be impossible after only half a season. Why hire someone and then fire him for lack of experience?

Not that I'm saying I think he'll be a top manager of course, odds are always against that, but I'd be surprised if Hull can pick up anyone significantly better.

And the players must be despairing at this point, surely they need some stability.

Usually a change of manager in this kind of situation means the players give a bit more of a shite for a couple of games and pick up a few points more than if nothing changes, and relegation battles are decided by fine margin so it could be pivotal. That said, sometimes it's just a matter of riding out the bad patch. Pardew went through a torrid time a few years back with the Barcodes and then suddenly turned it around before leaving for the Palace job.

I don't think manager's ability has much to do with it, at all.

Usually the players have stopped playing for the coach by this point too. I wouldn't say that's the case with Hull. I'd be amazed if they picked up more than 30 points by the end of the year.

Apparently Phelan got the axe after a fight with ownership over the lack of player transfer funding ... same reason Brucey left.
I thought Phelan was doing "as well as expected" with what he had to work with and would be as good as any to help them fight for promotion back to the Prem next year.
Players were seemingly working hard for him but they just lack the talent (plus there's no depth in the squad) to achieve the results necessary to stay up. Unless ownership suddenly doles out the cash and buys some fantastic players, Hull be one of "the three" regardless of who is putting names on the team sheet.

Paul Merson's reaction to the Marco Silva apointment. What an idiot, I bet he hasn't watched one game of a Marco Silva team.

Yeah he was pretty good for us and did an amazing job at Estoril. Didn't watch any Olimpiakos games but heard good things too.
But he has an almost impossible mission if he does not get new players.

This month he will face the best teams and the squad he has I do not know if it is better than Newcastle, even Swansea and Burnley for me have better players, he is crazy to take this job on January and probably no new players.

I wish him all the luck, but my favourite coach with Carvalho as president was Jardim/Jesus/Silva. Ah, and if he does not get results it looks he has some new friends on British TV. Was that guy near Merson the former Liverpool player and Assistant Coach to Houllier?

I think what he has achieved there under the circumstances is overachieving.

I love that bitching about british managers being overlooked and so forth but this dude won trophies with his teams, if it is so easy to do that then why don't these british managers go out there, get trophies on their CVs, because apparently Merson could win the league with Olympiacos, then be noticed by PL clubs.
