Michael Carrick - Middlesbrough Manager

Obviously not doing his credentials as ten Hag's eventual successor any harm! We would have been fine if he had stayed on for the rest of the season instead of hiring that fecking fraud Wreck-It Ralf.
Think Carrick did the best thing for his own career.

Getting out of that sesspit was perfect timing. Sticking around would have only ruined his reputation if he couldn't turn it around. Now he can build himself up at another club, prove he's got what it takes then come back if he wants to.

I'm glad he didn't stay and suffer the abuse tbh.

Fans on here were actively rooting for us to drop points to avoid another Ole situation  poor guy had to go. Great guy and happy he's doing well.

He would not have had the power to here to have fixed the problems. He needed to leave.

It was far too toxic. Getting an outside voice was always the right move, even if Rangnick was never gonna take us forward.

Anyway, doing great at Boro by the looks of it.

Ole has been and is still being shamed here. It’s not a small number here picked out Carrick and McKenna at that time.
I think that Ole did great job to manage our squad until Ronaldo entered the mix. Unfortunately, several bad, or not-worked out transfers are one of the several reasons that Ole’s tenure ended in that way.
Really good to see Carrick is starting nicely in championship. There is still a long way for him to find out how good he can become. I just keep watching and hope him, a legend in this club, all the best in his journey.
I’ve just been reading through some old threads. Much of the criticism of Carrick and McKenna actually came from Ole fans who felt the manager was being “let down” by his coaches.

The sensible posters were the ones who pointed out that we had absolutely no idea what the coaches actually did. And the ones pointing out that appointing an ex-Spurs coach (McK) didn’t count as “nepotism”.

Our performances with Ronaldo gone should put the lid on how good Ole and his coaches were.

They were not the best (with Carrick and McKenna both being young) but would have comfortably kept us in the top 4 without Ronaldo. People like to equate them to someone like Lampard who is actually incompetent.

On topic, I have high hopes for Carrick as a manager. He was the smartest player from the last Fergie team. Scholes was intelligent on the ball but dumb when someone asked him to talk, fortunately he stayed quiet as a player.

The coaching was evidently a problem though. There were zero patterns of play anywhere on the pitch. Zero. We have them now, and you don't need world class players to coach them.

Anyway, best of luck to Carrick, great player and servant to the club, would have preferred him to stay the season instead of Ralf.

We did well in the three games under his tenure though. I'm only saying until the end of the season. It couldn't have gotten any worse and he soon would have shut the doubters up. If anything, Wreck-It should have got the abuse rather than Carrick.

Still, like you say, it's good to see things working out for him. He's got plenty of time on his side and he's already proved to be better than Lankie Frampard.

Keep him away from us. He recommended Longstaff to us and fortunately the glazers were stingy.

He might have done great, but then we'd be in another situation of giving it to him full time when truly he wasn't ready.

We did the right thing letting Rangnick 'reset' the team and then bringing in a fresh hope in ETH.

It's difficult to know what Carrick would have got long term, but he did great with Chelsea/Villareal.

when we were linked with him all the papers said carrick recommended him. He is a Geordie after all but as always papers can’t really be believed.
"all the papers said"

Show one credible source? Shouldn't be a long find if it was written everywhere.

Doing a fine job. While Boro where better than the league position suggested when he took over he has taking them from just above relegation to 3rd in 15 games

I'm afraid if Carrick did a decent job, the pressure would be him offered a permanent job. I love Carrick as much as anyone, but it wasn't his time yet.

Watching Middlesbrough today and Carrick has them playing some excellent football. Bit open at the back but their hall retention and attacking play is fantastic at times.

Comfortable 3-0 home over Blackpool. 77% possession and 3 beautiful goals.

Sheffield United dropped points today so Boro's small hope for automatic promotion is still on. A play-off spot is now pretty much theirs to lose though, being 22nd on the table when Carrick took over is now a distant memory for Boro fans.

The Championship is so barmy that he could finish 3rd but a loss of form and they could drop down to 16th

Longstaff has been regular player for a team that was in 3rd position till yesterday and the team that is one of the best defensively.

He might not be some superstar but he has done well.

This longstaff deal is overblown and shows how some are just clueless about it. We enquired when we thought we could get him for around 20 million, it wasn't possible and we moved on quickly.

It's 3 years already and few are still moaning about it when the player himself has done well.

Carrick and McKenna also showed how clueless most fans are and just try to act as if they are experts on everything. What coaching staff does, none of the fan knows unless they attend training sessions.

Would be phenomenal if he gets them promoted. Super run of form right now

Im sorry but this is incorrect. The same people having a go at Ole were having a go at McKenna without a clue what was happening on the training ground. You saw this on virtually every thread that was created at the time. Sensible posts at that time were few and far between.

The build-up to the second goal they scored yesterday really showed off the way Carrick is trying to get his team to play:

It's hardly unwarranted at that time.

If Carrick and McKenna are this good then where are they during Ole reign? Hardly an outrageous question at that time.

They were his assistants? Are you under the impression that assistants have final say on anything?

You realise your question would also indicate that you think Mike Phelan and Rene Meuensteen should be great managers based on the reverse?

I liked his management of us, you could see his potential.

It’s hardly an outrageous question even now!

But people weren’t so much questioning them as insisting that they were “obviously“ hopeless and anyone thinking otherwise was an idiot.

We need to remember that Ole’s coaching team wasn’t put together by him. Ole himself, along with Phelan, were short term cover suggested by SAF; Carrick was inherited from Jose; McKenna had been brought in as U18 coach, presumably by Murtough or one of his minions. It was quite conceivable that factions formed within that group and they weren’t all pulling in the same direction.

Ole was the one in charge. He had the last say on everything.

Maybe he didn't listen to Carrick or Mckenna?
